Haha, she was my teacher there, jesus was she a pitbull , but she was a good teacher and didn't take anycrap . but yeah, Loughborough college is a top college to go to
Walkers Wench Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 My soon to be 16 year old daughter will be going to six form next year but doesn't want to stay on at Wreak Valley. What's the best six form in the city or county? It seems our kids are in the same year group there,,my son is soon to be sixteen and is unsure what to do either. Wreake had their open evening the week before last,,and although i couldn't make it as i was away with work, he attended with his Grandad so i could get some info at least! The courses he wants aren't all available there together. He doesn't have to make decision til Feb, so we are keeping our options open and looking around.
CosbehFox Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 I don't know how much things have changed but QE used to be streets ahead. I had a friend in school that went from QE to Cambridge to do Maths. He's a walking calculator and he got ushered straight in by his family. On paper, it's the best and it gets the pick of the kids leaving school. Add into there lads from Tigers and County Cricket academics too. However, a lot find it alienating as it can be very cliquey in terms of class and friend circles. I went it's poorer brother Regent. My best mate went Cambridge from there which was pretty unheard of and the college loved it. Best thing you can do is go the opendays which are normally around about now. You get a feel for the vibe of the place and personally QE didn't feel right for me. You'll visit the potential teachers too and get an idea of the syllabus.
Webbo Posted 22 October 2010 Author Posted 22 October 2010 ps Has anyone contacted you yet ? Should I arrange for a relevant someone to wake up with a horses head on the pillow ? ( it usually focusses their attention ) No, no one's contacted me yet. I can only assume Mark is taking Finner's money. As for the horse's head, don't you worry about that. There's a reason why Honda Raposa's disappeared.

Webbo Posted 22 October 2010 Author Posted 22 October 2010 I'm pretty sure Grammar schools are free, you just usually have to pass the 11+ to get in. I went to a Grammar school and it cost nowt. Yeah, I'm at sixth form at a grammar and all I needed was the 11+. They seemed to keep it down here and cut it out further up the country. I think Lincolnshire and Kent are about the only places left where there are free Grammar schools. In Leicester they were phased out in the 70s, just before I could have gone.

From what i can gather you didn't miss very much! I've got a pile of leaflets to go through,,,none very informative though i must say. They had a boy and a girl from sixth form stand up and 'sell' it to the kids basically,,telling them all about the perks,,trips,,and weeks of exam leave they'll get! By the time the talk had finished, my Dad took my son to have a word with his tutors,,and those of the courses he wanted to next year,,and most had gone home!
Dylan Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 I'm applying to college now. Most likely QE as my first choice. Supposed to be the best, but people have said its not that good if your not the smartest- saying they don't give you much help if you don't understand. Try to go to as many open days as possible.

Adster Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 I go to a 6th form with a high reputation and pass rate.. In the name of john cleveland college.

This. If you fall behind you have to catch up, they have very little tolerance for anyone that isn't up to their standards. No matter the reason. Also as mentioned above the college is very segregated and some people find it hard fitting in. the rugby players go on like they own the place and get a lot of preferential treatment.
Raj Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 Gateway??? Dont recommend QE as i went there in the late 80's and look what happened to me...
Leicester_Loyal Posted 22 October 2010 Posted 22 October 2010 Leicester College - Thursday 25th November QE (in Leicester) - Saturday 20th November QE is the best but they don't really give you any help there? There isn't really a good atmosphere either, its like a day out to Coventry. Even in the dining halls the teachers are telling you to be quiet. Loughborough is good, but its too far away from me, about 45minutes there on a bus and 45minutes back again. Gateway is close, good teachers, but they'll seem to accept anyone (I attend Gateway)

Its worth the effort travelling. You get alot of freedom, treated and respected like an adult, everyones sound, students and teachers. Theres an open evening this Wednesday, 4-7.

Not sure what you mean by atmosphere, And i've never found that bit about the dining halls to be true.

Webbo Posted 13 November 2010 Author Posted 13 November 2010 Just back from Gateways open day, a lot better than I expected. I thought I saw Raj there as well, didn't say hello because I don't really know him.
The Doctor Posted 13 November 2010 Posted 13 November 2010 on a slightly related note, i'm helping out in the chemistry department at the QE open day next saturday.

AoWW Posted 13 November 2010 Posted 13 November 2010 You should have gave him a hug and walked off saying nothing. Perhaps being hugged by random strangers is an everyday occurrence for Raj, though?

Flynny Posted 13 November 2010 Posted 13 November 2010 QE is the best but they don't really give you any help there? There isn't really a good atmosphere either, its like a day out to Coventry. Even in the dining halls the teachers are telling you to be quiet. What? I finished there three years ago, the dining halls are nothing to do with the teachers, it's not supervised like a school or something. QE might lack a little bit of support but most of the staff there are great and will help you out if you ask for it. They strike a good balance between being helpful and not spoonfeeding. I found that if I handed in homework I'd get good feedback on it, and if I asked questions at the end of classes I'd get help. If I didn't hand in homework that was on my back, and if people didn't ask, they'd be left alone far more. If I'd not had that at QE I'd be having even more trouble at Uni than I am anyway. It's quite a big leap from college to Uni, where you're expected to learn on your own, even from QE. From a different kind of college that leap would only be greater.
