davieG Posted 23 October 2010 Posted 23 October 2010 He's the controversial former England manager who is the incumbent at npower Championship club Leicester City. Sven Goran Eriksson talks to Sportsmail about his career highs and lows plus his penchant for beans and eggs on toast before a match... and how he likes to spoil his girlfriends! What would you be if you weren't a sportsman? Probably a journalist! When I finished at high school, I had three choices. To go to university in Stockholm, to train as a journalist in Gothenburg or be a sports teacher. I was accepted for all three, but chose the latter. Which other sportsman would you like to be? In Sweden there are two big names in sport. I'd like to have been one of those. The first, everyone knows, is Bjorn Borg. The second was Ingemar Stenmark, a slalom skier. He was an artist. It was joyful watching him. He came from the north of the country, hardly spoke a word, but he just went out and beat everyone. Sweden stood still when he raced. Career highlight? Gothenburg becoming the first (and only) team from Sweden to win a European title (the UEFA Cup) was a highlight . Being appointed to the England job was a privilege. But perhaps winning the Italian league with Lazio was my proudest. If you win the Italian league with a team that is not Milan, Inter or Juventus, it is wonderful. . . . And what was the worst moment? In a one-off match, being beaten by Northern Ireland with England. We were awful. But losing that quarter-final against Portugal with England in Germany at the World Cup in 2006 was horrible. We all thought that we had a good chance to go further than the last eight and, for me personally, I knew my time with England was over. What's the best advice you've ever been given? It came from Tord Grip. When I was 27 years old, he advised me to stop playing and take up coaching. Favourite karaoke song? I've never sung karaoke. Three most listened to songs on your iPod? I don't have an iPod but I listen to Rod Stewart and Elton John all the time. Last book you read? I'm reading one at the moment, it's a history of Sweden. It comes in five volumes, the history from 1,000AD to the present day by Herman Lindqvist. It's very good. Last book you read? Your favourite pre-match meal? Beans and egg on toast. Can you cook? Best dish? I'm pretty good at pasta. I can cook fish, but I'd like to think I'm better at cooking pasta. Your favourite holiday destination? On a big boat, together with friends, in the Greek islands. In a film of your life, who would you like to play you? Easy. A young Paul Newman (laughs). What's the most expensive treat you've ever bought? I would imagine it was some present for a girlfriend (laughs again). Tell us a secret . . . In some ways, I'm in the perfect job. I get to work with footballers and sit pitchside. But in other ways, I'm not comfortable with it at all. I know you will find this hard to believe, but I'm actually very shy. I don't like being in the limelight, or being known. I'd rather sit in the corner than on a stage. Honestly. Ric Flair Posted 23 October 2010 Posted 23 October 2010 I forgot just how much I loved this man since his England days but now I remember!! What a lad.
Scaramanga! Posted 23 October 2010 Posted 23 October 2010 Anyone else give beans and egg on toast a try after reading it? Shamefully I did.

Far Post Gerry Posted 23 October 2010 Posted 23 October 2010 I love the fact that we've got a manager who, in his spare time, reads the five-volume complete history of Sweden! Wonder if Holloway or NP ever picked that one out at Waterstones...

Zingari Posted 23 October 2010 Posted 23 October 2010 sounds like he's got the archetypal rock and roll lifestyle
haraven Posted 23 October 2010 Posted 23 October 2010 I did a Sven: Eggs, beans and toast for breakfast - then I put on a charmer for the missus. I got the same receding hairlines too, so I am a Sven in the mould.
DB11 Posted 23 October 2010 Posted 23 October 2010 actually was just thinking about breakfast and the thought had crossed my mind!! Haha yes
