Patrick van Aanholt

He started one champions league game (when they had already topped the group and sent out their reserve team) and came on as a sub 3 times for 11, 7 and 4 minutes, he has played once in each domestic cup too, he has not featured in a single league game. He has not played a lot of first team football this season, it's a fact.

He seems like a nice lad, but he is still very young and we don't have much experience at the back to guide him through the game. Bruno didn't have his best game against Millwall but we have looked more solid with him at the back. He could also probably do with a break every now and again, so it's good to see some Left back-up brought in. If Aanholt is as fast and attack minded as people say he is then he would be great to come on and run at tired defenders, he could probably do a job on the left wing, but as he admits in his interview (on the Chelsea OS) he has not really been tested defensively this season. Lets not throw him in there and hope he doesn't **** up, lets give him time to find his feet while we still have a very capable left back. I would be a bit concerned about starting an away game with Naughton and Aanholt as full backs at the best of times, but not having a defensive midfielder as such to protect the back four, and Hobbs being out of sorts at the moment, it seems a big risk.

Excellent summary.....

Personally I don't mind whether he starts or not, we will have had a bit of a break so Berner might be the best call for Tuesday, as long as Sven makes the choice for self evident footballing reasons rather than 'this is my player' type reasons then I am happy.

Talking of which, Sven seems to have displayed a modest preference for his own players at the expence of Hobbs, Berner and Waghorn (Fryatt too), just as long as it doesn't cost us...

Sven's most expennsive player at Man City was Rolando Bianchi, even though he scored in the first game he failed to make the team. Sven showed at least then that he didn't play hom just because he just wanted to play his players. Instead he let Mpenza and vassel play before Bianchi which looked daft but I guess it was about attitude shown in training etc.

I would have thought it was a given that Sven would pick the 'this is my player' ahead of Hobbs, Berner, Wagorn & Fryatt.

Why else would he have brought them to the club?

The problem arises if his players don't perform on the pitch but he sticks with them.

The problem on here is that the minute a 'Sven' player is picked and doesn't, in his first game, play better than whoever he replaced there is a clamour to drop them and revert to the old player. Look at the stick that Vitor, Vassell & Mee have taken.

You have to give players a couple of games to bed in.

I dont always think that Sven does play his players regardless, look at Bednar for example yes he wasnt as good as we were expecting but Sven put him on the bench from the start during some of the games he was on loan to us for. In Sven :sge: we must trust

Of course he's earnt the right to start. Sven has watched him closely and obviously thinks he's equal to or better than what we've got in Bruno. That's why we've signed him.

No denying that, but is the best way to bed in a player to throw him into the first team? Vassell was clearly unfit when he joined us, and was starting ahead of fit players who had shown in the past that they were loyal to the club (Waghorn, Fryatt, Dyer) it has worked out in the sense that Vassell is now fit and firing, but when we couldn't buy a goal from a forward it was hard to justify his place in the team. I don't remember Vitor getting that much stick but there were concerns raised over the back 4 that didn't belong to us. I think Mee has been forgiven quite quickly, because we won, but if he has another horror show in the not too distant future I will understand fans getting on his back. I'm not even going to mention Bednar and Kirkland. Vassell and Mee would definitely have benefitted from a few run outs when we were winning and not under too much pressure before getting their first start.

On the flip side it has worked with Naughton and the Yak. Bamba was not so much of a risk because we had no choice and he had been playing first team football regularly up to him signing for us.

We will see what Sven decides.

Speak for yourself, he was horrible, I hope he doesn't play again in a long while, 2 penalties conceded, poor clearance for their 1st goal.

Hackney and the Captain...

I think we all agree that Sven has brought in players who he feels are better than the players we already have, I am comfortable in the belief that his choices are made on that basis.

It may have taken a little time in some cases, but Naughton, Cunningham, Davies and Vassell all did pretty well though clearly Bednar and Kirkland did not, for different reasons.

Vassell took some time to get going and some called for the introduction of Fryatt and in particular Waghorn in his place, but Vassell is now proving his worth so we can probably say that Sven got these additions pretty much spot on...:appl:

Bedner and Kirkland were both 'honest' mistakes, quickly dealt with and soon gone, Bamba looks like a gem, some rough edges maybe but, so far, something of a bargain.

Mee and van Aarnolt are young players with no league experience whatsoever, I have no doubt that Sven believes them to be good enough to be regular starters but given the pressure on results for the rest of the season it will be very interesting to see how and when they are brought into the side.

We do not have the advantage of seeing how they shape up in training, but as Mee showed last week, full on Championship football can be pretty intimidating in it's intensity.

Anyway I really have no favourites here, just pick the best team to get us into a playoff spot!...

As they say in Oakland - "Just win,baby"...

That's the key. If Van Aanholt looks good in training he will get the nod, if Sven doesn't think he is ready for whatever reason then Bruno will start. Sven will make the best decision for the team.

I really hope Van Aanholt does start though. Most of the best teams in the world in recent years have made excellent use of having pacey, attack minded left and right backs. We will be such an exciting team to watch with Naughton bombing down one side and the new lad down the other. Having mobile full backs who are able to get well forward when we attack as a team will make such a difference. It's why Asley Cole is so important for Chelsea and why England looked so clueless going forward when Cole wasn't there against the French.
