Van Aanholt Joins Foxes On Loan

Leicester City has today announced the signing of Chelsea left-back, Patrick Van Aanholt, on loan for the remainder of the season, subject to Football League approval.

The 20-year-old full-back, who passed a medical earlier today at the Belvoir Drive Training Ground, goes straight in to Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for the away trip to Sheffield United in the npower Championship, on Tuesday February 1st.

Van Aanholt, who joined Chelsea as a youngster from PSV Eindhoven in 2007, has represented the Netherlands at under-19 and under-21 level. He enjoyed loan spells at Coventry City and Newcastle United, providing prior experience at this level.

The left-back scored for Chelsea, ironically against Newcastle United, who he had previously been loaned to and is highly thought of at Stamford Bridge due to his good technical ability, pace and his willingness to get forward and support the midfield and attack.

Leicester City Assistant Manager, Derek Fazackerley, said: "Patrick is another quality addition to our squad. He is a talented young footballer, with good skill, natural pace and the required hunger and desire to do well in the game.

"Although Ben Mee can play at left-back, Bruno Berner is our only specialist player in that position, so this was an area we needed to add to.

"Patrick has impressed at Chelsea, Coventry City and Newcastle United and we are certain he will do likewise here at the Walkers Stadium."

Sheff Utd are in for a hell of a beating! :scarf:

From what I've seen he looks a quality prospect. I can remember him scoring a scorcher for Cov last season.

He''ll also know Lamey as they were both at PSV at the same time albeit he was in the youth academy at the time.

How is that ironic? Did Newcastle send him back saying he would never make a footballer and their entire coaching staff would eat their hats if he ever scored a goal against them?

A lad I work with is a chelsea fan, and reckons he's the natural succesor to Ashley Cole. He also said he's lightening quick. Happy days, another quality bit of wheeler dealing from Sven. :sge:

Obviously thought of highly at Chelski, as he signed a new deal until 2015 today. Though they might have just been scared that the lure of Svennis would coax him away hehe

Pace and width from the left and right side of defence we'll be playing 2 - 3 - 2 - 3 - 2 when these guys start running up the wings! Quality!

lining up with 12 outfield players then.

I know I'm repeating myself here, but please Sven give him a 20 minute run out against Sheff United but no more. We are away from home, and if we line up with two young attacking full backs we leave ourself very open. Aanholt should not be Bruno's replacement, but an alternative. Bring him on for 20-30 minutes once we have estbalished oursleves in the game and let him run at their tired defence.

He should not be started until at least Bristol City at home, and only then if he has proved himself. Bruno is currently number one left back, Aanholt has to earn the right to start a game.

Anyone have any idea what chances we have of sigining him on a permanent?

Very little chance of us getting him permanently, his generally viewed as Cole's successor at Chelsea.

That may be but how long is Cole going to be playing for? If he stays at Chelsea for a while, he must have another 3/4 years in him at the top level. This guy isn't gonna want to sit around waiting, who knows what could happen if we go up and wave a bit of cash infront of him. Lets just see if it works first aye.

couldn't agree more but I'm not so sure sven agrees unfortunately.

I don't think even one of our signings under sven has actually done that.

Potentially a very naive thing to say. If he knows he is signing a class player and they are showing their ability in training it's not really our place to say who should start. Surely having superior ability is sometimes enough reason to replace an ageing full back who has looked a bit jittery recently.

I understand the point of view about throwing him straight in there but i'm also going to respect Sven's decision. I wouldn't like to decide who plays against sheff utd tbh.

He has a few days to impress in training too so it's possible, but from a squad point of view it will feel like a kick in the teeth for Berner that after signing a new contract and deciding to stay he is replaced the very instant someone else comes along. Giving Berner the start at Sheff United will at least mke him feel like he has a part to play in the team.

From a footballing point of view Aanholt hasn't played much first tem football this year and is only 20 so it may benefit him to come on for a short spell to get used to playing alongside Hobbs, Bamba and Dyer, and get used to the fact we won't offer him much cover at left back.

get real not played much the lads played champions league this year .its time to stop feeling sorry for bruno , bruno was chaseing shadows against millwall and dont worry all teams in championship will have seen our weakness down the left .sevn saw it as well . and like he as done since he arrived as sorrted it ,there is no subsitute for pace and now thats we have all over the park.

Ive said we're one player short of really doing some damage in this league, and although i love bruno, for me hes the weaklink in the team. Hopefully we can be better defensively now with this addition

He started one champions league game (when they had already topped the group and sent out their reserve team) and came on as a sub 3 times for 11, 7 and 4 minutes, he has played once in each domestic cup too, he has not featured in a single league game. He has not played a lot of first team football this season, it's a fact.

He seems like a nice lad, but he is still very young and we don't have much experience at the back to guide him through the game. Bruno didn't have his best game against Millwall but we have looked more solid with him at the back. He could also probably do with a break every now and again, so it's good to see some Left back-up brought in. If Aanholt is as fast and attack minded as people say he is then he would be great to come on and run at tired defenders, he could probably do a job on the left wing, but as he admits in his interview (on the Chelsea OS) he has not really been tested defensively this season. Lets not throw him in there and hope he doesn't **** up, lets give him time to find his feet while we still have a very capable left back. I would be a bit concerned about starting an away game with Naughton and Aanholt as full backs at the best of times, but not having a defensive midfielder as such to protect the back four, and Hobbs being out of sorts at the moment, it seems a big risk.
