shailen Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 If Barnsley win they go above us. This isn't going to be easy. Unchanged team for me. In theory it shoukd be a comfortable 2-0 win for us. They have been playing above their potential, and should get credit for that. However we have too much quality to be beaten by this side, coupled with the form we are in. City 2 - 0 (yak 2)

City 2 - 0 (yak 2) I'm sorry but that's exactly the sort of arrogant approach we can do without, and one that I sincerely hope is not shared by the players. We're far enough into the season now that it's clear that teams are where they are on merit.
Captain... Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 We are at home and we need a win, play all three... So: - Weale Naughton--Bamba--Mee--van AanholtWellens--KingVassell--Gallagher--DyerYakubu Allow the middle three to be flexible, Vassell to support the Yak, Dyer to attack on either flank and Gallagher as playmaker. Too attack minded for me, you would have to at least sacrifice one of PVA or Naughton to give us some extra defensive cover. I think it will be the same as on Tuesday, but I won't rule out Sven playing Ricardo instead of Weale, depsite his heroics on Tuesday so far Sven has tended to pick his own signings, I hope not but we will have to wait and see. This really is a must win game if we lose we drop behind Barnsley, if we win, with the other fixtures for the teams around us: Reading (8) v QPR (1), 19:45 - QPR win Burnley (11)v Norwich(2), 15:00 - Draw Leeds(6) v Coventry(15), 15:00 - Leeds win Leicester(10) v Barnsley(12), 15:00 - Leicester win Millwall (9)v Doncaster(14), 15:00 - Milwall win Nott'm Forest (4)v Watford(7), 15:00 - Forest win Swansea (3) v Cardiff (5), 13:15 - Draw With these results we would climb above Reading and Watford to 8th and pull away form Barnsley and Burnley, with Swansea and Cardiff playing each other too points will be dropped all around the top 12, if we want to get promoted we cannot be dopping them. The problem is Barnsley will be thinking the same defeat for them will put them 9 points but more importantly 6-8 places off playoffs almost out of the race. A vital game on Saturday.
cc_star Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 If its true about Wellens yellow cards we need him to pick up a booking so he misses the Bristol City game, and not Derby away the game after that

We should go out there thinking we can win this, if we just play to potential. Yeah i agree barnsley deserve to be where they are, i am just saying that they are performing above expectations.
ajthefox Posted 3 February 2011 Posted 3 February 2011 Same team as tuesday but bring in gally for vassell
harpendenfox Posted 4 February 2011 Posted 4 February 2011 I don't buy this 'Saturday's game is vital' stuff. We need to win 11 of our last 17 games. It doesn't matter who they are against. In some respects wins against teams above us are even more valuable, as they then don't register any points. Sure it's an important game, but no need to panic if we don't win, or even if we lose.

I totaly understand your comments, with the pressure on us to average 2+ points a game a cock up is definitely not what we need. Though I still remain concerned for our midfield, neither creative enough going forward nor robust enough under pressure in defence. Home games are a chance to address the creative issues and we still need to address the defensive issues, we were very lucky to get away with a poor midfield performance at Sheffield and we need to shape up to avoid a repeat of Millwall, or Ipswich, or Watford or even Bristol. With 2 attacking full backs, need Abe to provide defensive cover for back 4. I do not buy in to the idea that Abe is cover for the back 4, he does not 'sit' or 'hold', he tends to be more of a marauder and a hustler, chasing down the ballcarrier all over the pitch. King is far more adept in this role due to his positional sense, not ideal but with Wellens alongside him in deeper roles there should be enough cover.
edwbon Posted 5 February 2011 Posted 5 February 2011 I am a tyro when it comes to football strategy, but nothing ventured nothing gained. So in connection with the above comments here goes. The somewhat unconventional 4–2–1–3 formation was developed by José Mourinho during his time at Inter Milan including in the 2010 UEFA Champions League Final. By using captain Javier Zanetti (read King) and Esteban Cambiasso (read Wellens) in holding midfield positions, he is able to push more players to attack. Wesley Sneijder filled the Trequartista role and the front three operated as three strikers, rather than having a striker and one player on each wing. Using this formation, Mourinho won The Treble with Inter in only his second season in charge of the club. In the away Man City game Abe was far more effective when he was given more freedom in the second half (witness his through ball), while Gallagher was praised in the home Man City match for his pin-point accurate crosses, which Bamba, among others, was able to capitalize on. Would it be possible to use either Abe or Gallagher, for example, operating behind the front three in the Treguarista role? Alternatively use Abe behind the front three, and Gallagher as the third striker also operating from the wing, Gallagher by his own admission is not as fast as Vassel or Dyer, or with the physical presence of the Yak. But there are various permutations on this depending on who is in form, the injury situation, and the composition of the opposing team, such as using Dyer or Waghorn or Schlupp up front as a third striker. Waiting to be shot down in flames

Waiting to be shot down in flames Playing a lot of FM recently? (It sounds like it, alright ) First of all, Zanetti and Cambiasso are 2 of THE BEST PLAYERS OF THEIR GENERATION without a doubt. Skilled, experienced and consistent both for club and country. Secondly, you can't just throw players into an unfamiliar formation like you can on a computer game. Thirdly, it's unlikely that you can 'copy' a setup of another team, asking your players to perfectly replicate world class duplicates and play the exact same system. One point I do think you've got spot on is Abe's ability further up the pitch. He does find a lot of space when further forward and personally I think he looks very potent in the final third (when in this situation and with confidence). Wellens plays this role very well though so it doesn't seem like Abe's time at the moment. If King were allowed to sit a bit deeper than Abe in defence and let Abe close down but a bit higher up (effectively swapping positions but keeping the same roles) then I think we could be a bit more effective on the break. Abe's distribution could be more effective and it still allows King to roam forward from deep once the ball has been moved on. What do you think of this?
marbelladave Posted 5 February 2011 Posted 5 February 2011 Edwbon and Haydos.... Both off your posts highlight the problems with our midfield, still to my mind the biggest issue we need to deal with. The point about Abe is spot on, he is not a holding midfield player by any stretch of the imagination, he is a box to box player who has a decent passing game and likes to get stuck in, exactly like Wellens in fact! They both like to get forward but at this time King has the attacking role, so, in effect, we have all three of our regular midfielders playing very similar roles. So... Who provides cover by sitting in front of the back4? Who is the ballwinner who really gets stuck in when the going gets tough? Who can grab hold of the game when we the game is running against us? Who drives at the opposition box, committing defenders and making space for our strikers? Etc, etc, etc...... We may have three pretty decent midfielders in Abe, Wellens and King, but as a combination they are simply not that effective, with them all playing a very similar style it looks to me that we have three players doing the work of two, which kind of leaves us shorthanded (in a strange sort of way). At the Walkers we mostly get away with this, but away from home we are much too easily dominated.
edwbon Posted 5 February 2011 Posted 5 February 2011 From Haydos "Playing a lot of FM recently? (It sounds like it, alright )" Damn it! "One point I do think you've got spot on is Abe's ability further up the pitch. So this could be one stopgap alternative until we get a player more used to the holding role - at least when playing away
Jodranadinho Posted 5 February 2011 Posted 5 February 2011 I feel it'll be the same team as sheffield. Anyone see in the Sun that Tunch could be a suprise inclusion to the squad after playing 45 minutes of a training match the other night?
