Though on the bbc red button today, on of the premier league chiefs insisted that the 'benefits of all seater stadiums far outweigh those with terraces' or something along those lines. I cant see the government ever sanctioning it, but it'd be brilliant if one day they did

No harm in the thread being in both sections, though. Maybe I'm just odd (yes, indeed) but I rarely look at the General Football section, just the LCFC bit.

And if someone tries to use Hillsborough in the argument, that was more to do with bad policing and the massive fences in front of the terraces (didn't the government enforce those for safety reasons?)

Guest Bilo Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 There has been significant support for this for years by fans and fan groups, the overwhelming majority of fans support the choice to stand or sit even if they have no wish to stand themselves. Indeed, most see that such safe standing areas would be in their interest as there would be no more obstructed views for sitters when behind someone who wants to stand, and no more arguments related to them that could spoil the day for both fans. All common sense really with a successful precedent in Germany but the trouble is that there has been no support from either the politicians or the footballing bodies. Now however, with the Lib Dems as junior partners in this coalition, there is some support politically for safe standing at last. The Lib Dems as a party support the German model of small safe standing areas alongside seating, and in reality there would probably only be 10-20% given over to standing areas in most English grounds. Hopefully this where the party could use its influence upon the Government but realistically, it's the Premier League and FA they have to persuade. One persuading factor could be the view of the fans who make the game what it is, and whom largely support these moves. So get the petition signed, it could yet turn out to be the factor that moves us into the 21st century.

I know that clubs like Peterborough have had areas of terracing at this level recently, but I think that's a bit different to letting a club have its core of supporters in a terrace week in, week out. I know why the authorities are cool on this - they can all remember what going to the football was like in the 70s and 80s and how in a lot of ways it was a bloody nightmare. The game has changed beyond recognition since then, but I don't think anyone really knows how it would work out, so I can understand their caution up to a point. I know a lot of people look to the continent and see it being done well and safely, which is obviously encouraging, but they're different people with a different mindset in a lot of ways, so there's no guarantee that it would pan out the same way here, but I guess we won't know until we try. A lot of very intelligent and well reasoned arguments are being put forward as to why this should be brought back, and I honestly think that the authorities would be more than happy to give you what you want, because you want it for the right reasons and having waited so long you're unlikely to abuse it if you get what you want. The problem is, it's not you they're worried about - it's the people that like to act like a cock at football matches, and believe me, there used to be loads of them

Seems now the police, clubs etc know they have no safety argument they're going to continue pushing the "crowd management" (control - let's not kid ourselves) line for all it's worth which holds little water in reality. The "we can pinpoint troublemakers easier if they're sat down" argument only works if the standing area is next to away fans. Take the example of our ground, if [pipedream] the Kop were to be converted into terracing [/pipedream] would the authorities really be able to argue that unless everyone who stood there suddenly developed superhuman strength and were capable of cobbing missiles at the away fans a hundred odd yards away? In any case, EVERYONE - whether at present you're prevented from standing because people behind you want to sit, or conversely you prefer to sit at games but can't because everyone in front of you is standing - should sign this petition. It's about freedom a choice, a freedom which we all as Leicester fans and football fans deserve. Be good to get this little beauty up to Filbert Way. Think it'd have a few choice officials at the club squirming for answers as to why this isn't allowed.

Well, I stood on that terrace at Peterborough a couple of seasons back and it was a very different experience from standing in Pen 1 and 2 at Filbo in the early nineties, and I think that's primarily because the crowd seems to be made up of a totally different type of supporter now, generally one that's going to behave themselves a bit better. The point I'm making, if there is one, is that no one really knows for sure how this would work out. This isn't a good reason for it not to happen, but I'm pretty sure this uncertainty is influencing the mindsets of the decision makers. A lot of the obstacles that are being put in your way do seem like red herrings and I think the real reason the powers that be aren't keen is that they don't want to risk any return to the olden times, however unlikely that may look on paper. I think it's easy to worry too much about what might happen, and it seems to be where the authorities are coming from at the moment. Sooner or later I think they'll relent and their position will get a bit softer on it, but personally I don't see the harm in experimenting a bit with it and seeing how it goes. If you let fear of the unknown hold you back you'd never get anything done

Good amount of Leicester on the list looking down it though. Gunna try and push it out a bit more on twitter.

Anyone who supports this should do there bit to get the message out there if we are serious about trying to bring about a change. Just under 7,000 signatures so far which is great, but compared to the amount of football fans there are out there, or even just the number that stand week in, week out around the country, that is a drop in the ocean. We need as many people to sign it as possible if it is to have any impact.
