Tommy Posted 6 June 2005 Posted 6 June 2005 Coventry have revealed their new stadium will not be ready for the start of the new Championship season. The Sky Blues are moving into the 32,500-capacity Ricoh Arena but have asked the Football League if they can play their first three games away. "It is regrettable the Ricoh Arena will not be open in time but we have made back-up plans," chairman Mike McGinnity told the club's official website. The Football League board of directors will decide Coventry's fate on 8 June. From BBC Sport
Katy Posted 6 June 2005 Posted 6 June 2005 Thats a shame! What an awful name their new stadium has B)

Katy Posted 6 June 2005 Posted 6 June 2005 Will be interesting to see what 'fate' will be sealed though. What kind of punishment could they expect if any?
Sparky Posted 6 June 2005 Posted 6 June 2005 hey if the league say they cant plat their 1st 3 games away then i wonder if they will ask to borrow the walkers
Anish Posted 6 June 2005 Posted 6 June 2005 Haha what a farce! Let's all laugh at Coventry and hope the league say no to their request
davieG Posted 6 June 2005 Posted 6 June 2005 Cov's New Stadium Here and not a pub anywhere near it and so I've heard 2 mile radius no parking exclusion zone - that'll draw the crowds in, sure will have to rely on playing attractive footy now!
Matt Posted 6 June 2005 Posted 6 June 2005 On the way to France the other week I got a coach from Nuneaton to Coventry Bus Station, and we went passed the stadium I said to everyone "Theres no-way thats gonna be finished for the new season" and I was right , someone said to me "Prehaps they'll sort the actual stadium then finish the casino/shopping area" I thought that was possiblilty but I could see at the time its a hell of a way from compleation.
Solihullfox Posted 6 June 2005 Posted 6 June 2005 I was unfortunate enough to HAVE to go to Covscum and Coventry Chamber of Commerce stadium launch day about a year ago. Have to say that the stadium itself is very similar to The Walkers but the likeness ends there. The casino will be stunning with the yanks from Biloxi putting huge amounts of cash into the building. There will be loads of restaurants and venues for live acts which they hope will draw people in and eventually lead to punters spending on the tables as UK citizens become accustomed to visiting a casino. There is even a large indoor waterfall being built. The venue also has extensive conference and trade show facilities. The main stand has the executive boxes which are turned into hotel rooms when football is not being played. It will be interesting to see if the real thing matches up to the glitzy images I saw. Mind you a lot has gone wrong so far - a fire, Jaguar pulling out, failure to get the ok for the rail station at the side of the stadium which was designed to bring at least 3,000 fans to each game from Cov centre and financial problems for the club itself (tee hee) The whole place will look stunning with 13,000 fans in it next season

Katy Posted 7 June 2005 Posted 7 June 2005 Thats the problem with modern day stadiums, they seem to be built near or on industrial estates in the middle of nowhere - Chester Citys ground springs to mind for example.
davieG Posted 10 June 2005 Posted 10 June 2005 Coventry City are to appeal against The Football League's initial decision not to allow the club to play its first three matches away from home next season. The Midlands club made an initial application regarding their fixtures after announcing there would be a delay in the opening of the new stadium in the Ricoh Arena (pictured). Sky Blues chairman Mike McGinnity was disappointed with the League's initial decision, claiming a precedent had been set by both Bolton Wanderers and Stoke City back in 1997. "First off was Bolton, although that was a ruling by the Premier League," McGinnity told the club's official website. "Secondly, and most importantly in our case, is the fact that Stoke were allowed to play three games away from home by The Football League in 1997. "If they were allowed to, I don't see any reason why we can't." The Coventry chief added that the club will consider other options, should their request finally fall on deaf ears with The Football League. "Our second plan is that when the fixtures come out, we will try to negotiate with the team who we are due to be playing at home to see if we can get that fixture switched to their venue," McGinnity added. "Thirdly, if we have to look for an alternative venue to play our home game, when we find clubs who are willing to host the match, we will put it to a fans' vote on the website." With next season's Championship fixtures to be released on June 23, it remains to be seen if Coventry can resolve their fixture dilemma to the satisfaction of all concerned.
Anish Posted 10 June 2005 Posted 10 June 2005 I actually think they have valid grounds of complaint here. Of the first 3 games, 2 of them could easily be away (although 2 could also be at home too) and that only means that one game has to be rearranged. Surely the FA has set a precedent which has to be followed after the Stoke City stadium? And besides, common sense should really prevail here too - I mean do the FA really want to antagonise supporters to such an extent and make them travel miles away to a neutral ground to watch a 'home' game? It's really pathetic from the FA if they don't agree the Coventry's request.
john_lcfc Posted 10 June 2005 Posted 10 June 2005 the builders should work a few night shifts and a bit of overtime and it would be finished in no time
Matt Posted 11 June 2005 Posted 11 June 2005 This probably isn't an option they'd like seeing as they have said goodbye to Highfield Road BUT Elton John plays at Highfield Road which means demolition hasn't started, so can't Coventry postpone demolition and play there first few games there?!?! Being in the trade I know time means money but, Surly Coventry will be playing less for work...In the building trade you set a date for compleation you may be slightly out but if you don't meet certain deadlines the builders get fined, so i'm guessing Coventry are recieving compensation for the late compleation, so to be honest I can't see much problem with the demolition of Highfield Road being postponed and Cov starting there season there... Its probably something Coventry as a club and Coventry fans wouldn't be keen on seeing as they have said there farewells to the stadium but whats Coventrys other options?

Dave_7 Posted 11 June 2005 Posted 11 June 2005 they could just open the doors to the season ticket holders on a first come first serve basis, and they could all maul for their seats. lets be honest, it will be the best bit of the afternoon for them

Possibly lose money with the stadium not being on schedual? Possibly be docked points because the Football League say thats the only option (Pretty unlikely but if the FL say no to there appeal, i'd imagine the FL would threaten them with this kind of action), e.t.c...

C-man Posted 11 June 2005 Posted 11 June 2005 Today, iw as talking to a friend at cricket who is a Cov fan, and he's quite close to the club, and apparently, the builders have asked for an extra 20 weeks Because there is some subsidence on one side of the ground they have to replace foundations or something like that. Anyway, if this is true, its proabbly they would play at St Andrews
