Collymore Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 This is very interesting. Most people in snooker talk about O'Sulliven being the god but there's no doubt Higgins is a machine. I was watching tonight (as he cemented himself into another final) a bloke in the crowd shout out with real venom at Higgins in regards to the NOTW revelations. What do you think? did he know what he was doing?
Collymore Posted 30 April 2011 Author Posted 30 April 2011 What did he say? "How do you swallow 300 thousand John?" Basically what Higgins asked in Russia
shen Posted 30 April 2011 Posted 30 April 2011 Are the allegations being investigated? Haven't heard a thing about it since the story came out...
Mack Posted 1 May 2011 Posted 1 May 2011 He was bang to rights and his agent carried the can. Should not be allowed to compete in my opinion.
StanSP Posted 1 May 2011 Posted 1 May 2011 Just like Marlon King is being forgiven by some, Higgins should be too (and no I'm not comparing their crimes). Higgins served his ban and in my opinion should start off with a clean slate, which he has done. And fair play to him for putting it all behind him and getting to another World Final.

Really can't work it out as far as I can see what happend was. Higgins agreed to fix frames sudenly got cold feet found not guilty even though he had agreed on camera found guilty of pretending he would fix frames given a a job on the anti corruption team baffles me to be fair, should have been kicked out and instead given a job showing how not to be corrupt!

I swear this happens in the FBI - they get ex cons/pro's of fraud because they're the experts so they know the ins and outs of how its done and essentially give tips on how to combat it to the authorities. So I guess this is what they've done with Higgins?

Absolutely nothing at all like Marlon King. King has never once been accused or caught involved in illegal football related issues. His troubles were in his private live. Higgins however was caught red handed on video agreeing to fix frames of snooker. He should never ever have been allowed to compete again.
Salieri Posted 1 May 2011 Posted 1 May 2011 Makes me sick to see him out there today, competing in the World Snooker Final. Used to like him as a player, ironically won a few quid on him over the years. After seeing that video of him though, all respect went out of the window. Should have been banned for life, no question. COME ON TRUMP!!!
Mack Posted 3 May 2011 Posted 3 May 2011 Higgins said yesterday "As far as I'm concerned a line was draw under the story after the verdict of the enquiry." And it seems most of the rest of snooker is more than happy for the agenda to me moved on as swiftly as possible. Bottom line is the sport now has a cheat for a World Champion.
BoneDog Posted 3 May 2011 Posted 3 May 2011 I canna believe he won the final. Not happy. When he got heckled in the semi, the commentator said something like "well an unsavoury circumstance we have here", and I was thinking, "F*%king Hell, not half as unsavoury as that business John got involved in that he is getting heckled about and you're sweeping under the carpet because it upsets business". And the disgust in the groans and voices of the rest of the crowd at the heckler was laughable really.
Mack Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Some things in sport are known fact in close circles but are not widely talked about in the media. For example.. Top World Class sprinters are pretty much all on something. Road Cycling is full of drugs. Cricket was/is rife with spot betting and match fixing for betting. I would imagine inside Snooker circles it was widely know but not spoken that frame and match fixing in a similar way to cricket has been going on for years.
Steven Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Higgins' victory is not good for the game in general. He was seemingly willing to talk about accepting large sums of money to alter the result in snooker games, allegedly. As long as he is playing, I have lost interest. <_<
davieG Posted 4 May 2011 Posted 4 May 2011 Is this any better or worse than the likes of Marlon King and other footballers being allowed to continue playing after they've served their sentences. Higgins was punished, irrespective of whether you think it was enough he's served his time and is allowed back. I think they are all extremely fortunate to be allowed to continue to earn large sums of money but they're only able to do so because there are sufficient numbers of the public that think it's ok and therefore makes it financially worthwhile for the sports to let them back, if the public boycotted their appearances they wouldn't be able to continue.

I don't see the connection is King. King's misdemeanour's are in his personal life. He has never ever been accused of anything illegal related to his job as a footballer. I don't see how any comparison can be made. For example, I worked in a Supermarket as a kid at college, there was a blank video thieving ring going on and eventually the people were caught and rightly sacked. Another guy who work there around the same time got pissed on a night out got nicked for fighting. He came to work the next day without a problem, should he be sacked for personal issues? I don't get it.

The manner or the circumstance of the crime is irrelevant because the comparison is they've both been punished and served their time and therefore are legally entitled to play, the only thing that could stop them is by public boycott.

Absolutely correct there. It's the same thing with Contador and Armstrong in cycling. Higgins is obviously a fantastic snooker player and of the most talented ever, no-one can argue that, and his stature is such that the sport depends on him. Had it been Bingham or Wengbo or whoever caught on tape, I'm sure the repercussions would've been much more severe...
