Corky Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 The transfer policy is fine, we needed a new keeper and defence so we've concentrated on boosting those areas. Yes we do need another striker and possibly a winger but, as we all know, the defence was the problem last year and we've looked to rectify that.
Pookie Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 I'm glad someone gets where i'm coming from. It seemse blatanly obvious to me that we need more creativity in mf and up front. Just look at the top teams last season Swas, QPR, Cardiff etc - all had real quality up front Sinclair, Bellamy, Bothroyd, Routledge, Dyer Taarabt etc. So many posters on here seem obsessed with solid players and good pros etc - such players are vitally important but they only work if they are combined with creativity - see QPR last season. Yes and none of those three teams scored more goals than us last season Over the 36 game games Sven was in charge we scored 63 goals, QPR 57, Cardiff 60, Swansea 53, your arguement about our lack of creativity does stack up to me. QPR had so much creativity they drew 6 matches 0-0 and won 4 by 1-0, the resaon they won the league is that they kept a clean sheet in half of their matches. Didnt Paddy Kenny get their player of the season?
davieG Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 Sven can't plan the order in which signings are made that will depend a lot on the selling club, if could have been that we'd signed Maynard weeks ago but it just hasn't happened. We clearly do not know what is happening behind the scenes what we do know is that there will be 2/3 more signings and these are more than likely to be 'non-defensive' players. I think we'll also see some loanees who, after last seasons lessons will probably be attacking type players as they pose less of a risk through their inexperience. The time to query the transfer policy and we have no influence over it anyway is when the window is about to close.

Didnt Paddy Kenny get their player of the season? I take the point - and stats don't lie, to an extent. Perhaps we should see what happens by the end of the t'fer window. I am commenting on what I see and comparing our attacjing players with those in other sides. Are you saying we had players of the quality of Sinclair, Taraabt and Bellamy? By the way Paddy Kenny getting player of the year tells the story about what English fans value sin players sometimes (which is a huge factor in our lack of ability to develop creative players - but that's another argument). Just out of interest who do you think it would be harder for QPR to replace Paddy or Adel? One of them is the subject of a £15m bid from PSG - have a guess which?
Pookie Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 I actually made an error - QPR scored just 47 goals in their last 36 games. It should also be noted that under Sven we have scored 3 or more goals in 8 times from those 36 games, 5 of those games we scored 4 and once we scored 5
foxes2011 Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 id be happy iw got one more attacking player but when i say that there are some around who can play midfeild and attact someone like vassel who plays attack but also on the wings if you need. i thought we missed out bad on Craig m Smith, what a player dont understand why he chose brighton over us i think we need one proper cm attacking, defensive or whatever maybe even on loan imo if hargreaves is available and can prove himself on trial he would be fine on pay as you play. what others think we need?????

The time to query the transfer policy and we have no influence over it anyway is when the window is about to close. For the record, I do agree with this. The t'fer policy can only be fully judged at the end of the window. My comments and my perspective is only based on where we are at the moment, which is a bit like commenting on a game at half-time. I suspect, judging by the aspirations to attract attacking players, that Sven is of precisely the same opinion about the need to redress the balance between defensive and attacking players. I am merely expressing this view and suggesting that we need to look at this as a matter of urgeny, if we want a squad that is genuinely capable of winning the division - in style.

North-LondonFox Posted 23 July 2011 Author Posted 23 July 2011 Maybe maybe not, but as he just pointed out as a team we scored more. End of story. Fair enough, but in my view football is slightly more complicated than bare facts; although I do accept that the stats do back up a lot of what you are saying.
Stevie Synex Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 I think that it is fair to say that a player with flair will always attract a higher value than say a defender or goalkeeper, flair puts bums on seats and increases revenue for the club investing in such a player. Our club does have players of quality, Gally for one, but I would agree that generally speaking we do not possess the type of players that you are referring to you in last post - as you say, stats don't lie and if we are to believe in the principle "if you don't conceed you don't lose" then you can see where Sven is probably coming from. Out of interest, who would you say were the "flair" players that got Norwich City the runners up spot last season?
Guest shearfox Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 I actually made an error - QPR scored just 47 goals in their last 36 games. It should also be noted that under Sven we have scored 3 or more goals in 8 times from those 36 games, 5 of those games we scored 4 and once we scored 5 Danns has strengthened our midfield which was very good last season and a couple of additions up top will certainly add the icing on the cake. The defence we have got now is way more experienced so basic errors will be dramatically cut. I can see us creating as many if not more chances next season while being more solid at the back. Surely a recipe for success.
North-LondonFox Posted 23 July 2011 Author Posted 23 July 2011 Norwich City had Lansbury on loan, Hoolahan - who was fantastic for them and Holt - who is not a flair player but a very potent attacking player and David Fox - who was immense. Not big names, but class attacking players - I tracked Norwich very closely last year.
kingfox Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 This article is a bit stupid, quality over quantity. We needed a new goalkeeper that was on the radar since Sven joined, we needed defenders because most of them were loans last season. That's basically saying you would of been happy with a defence of Neilson, Hobbs, Bamba, Berner to start with. Konchesky at Championship level is a quality signing hopefully, very consistent at Fulham and same at Pantsil we needed one more right-back for competition, and as you can see in the mercury Sven want's competetion in every position. Mills bit worried why we broke our transfer record for him, but he is a quality defender and on his day the best in this division and St Ledger is a Republic of Ireland international and he was a fans favourite at Preston. We needed to replace Naughton and Mee especially who were our stand out loan signings, and we have certainly done that with the signings of Pantsil(experienced), Peltier(highly rated bit like Naughton) plus with Ben Mee we have replaced him with Mills, St Ledger and now a fit Tunchev. Danns I reckon could be our best signing of the summer, we needed competition for places in midfield as Oakley isn't good enough anymore. King, Wellens, Abe and Danns to choose from in midfield is absolutely tremendous work from Sven. While we need strikers if you say we don't your deluded, Waghorn, Howard, Schlupp and Gallagher to score the goals for us...NO THANKS. Nugent proved himself at this level last season with Portsmouth and did very well and every team needs a 15-20 goal a season striker, or we simply won't go up. You should be thankful that players like Konchesky, Pantsil are willing to drop down a division, and that players of Maynard, Yakubu calibre want to join our club.

Raw Dykes Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 what others think we need????? GK - Scmeichel No.1, Weale as backup - sorted DEF - If we get Ball, then I think the defence is sorted, cos' he can play centre-half and I think we'll need at least 4 players for that position. MID - sorted, but could may be improved by replacing Oakley, who isn't bad, but is at the end of his career. Hargreaves or NRC maybe? ATT - need 1 class striker - Heskey/Yak/Maynard?, and possibly 1 winger, then I think we have a truly great Championship squad. So just 1 backup centre-half, 1 striker, and maybe 1 winger.

You say the article is stupid and then agree with a lot of what is said. Look at my posts - I recognise that all players are decent signings, but I think to really add some class we need to supplment the activity thus far, with some really quality creative/attacking players - as you seem to completely agree with. I think 7/8 defenders and one striker is not balanced - I am absolutely comfortable with my views on that. We need some attaccking players now and not Ball, in my opinion However, I accept we can only really judge at the end of the window. A transfer policy depends on building a team/squad and this can only be successful with a balanced approach. By the way - I love Sven and what he's done and I am fully behind the team/management - I just desperately want us to go up and I am not 100% that we have the squad to achieve that at this precise moment.

I like all of the above players, but they are not like the players I mentioned earlier in the thread. The players you really fear when City play against them. I think our squad needs some of those players
Raw Dykes Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 3/4 more attacking players. Why? I think we have a very strong midfield with depth, and when we get our new striker in, we'll have a solid attack, as well. I'd say our starting midfield and attack would be - Wellens, Danns, King, Gallagher, Nugent, (new striker). If you bring in 3 or 4 new attackers, which of the players I named do you leave out? And don't forget Abe, Oakley, Dyer, Vassell, Howard and Waghorn are already left out.

No one's disagreeing that the attack could do with strengthening and creative players will always be welcomed. I'm not questioning your right to start a topic just confused as to why you are concerned about a task that you recognise is unfinished.
foxes2011 Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 it will probley be 2 more attackers come wingers, players who can play on the wing and up front and maybe one more cm
North-LondonFox Posted 23 July 2011 Author Posted 23 July 2011 Why? I think we have a very strong midfield with depth, and when we get our new striker in, we'll have a solid attack, as well. We need cover in all of those positions. I love Waggy, but I think he needs a loan to get his confidence back. Otherwise we need to add a bit more, I hope Nugent will come good and I think Schlupp could give us a real boost (he starts today, so lets see how he does).
kingfox Posted 23 July 2011 Posted 23 July 2011 There is ages to go LondonFox. We need a striker and that will happen, we got our midfielders which I think is fine. We have been linked with wingers so one might come in. Sven knows what he is doing we don't need 3/4 more attacking players that's just stupid. Danns is a box to box midfielder and rejected Rangers for us, we know that he was a star for Palace and I know we have potentially pulled a very good signing out of the hat there. Abe is more defensive but can play wing and right-back, that's a whole lot of positions people like having a defensive midfielder in there side and Abe completes that. With Wellens he likes to add the bite in midfield, get on the ball and try to set up chances and link plays together, basically our Paul Scholes. While King is our attacking midfielder who scores us goals, you should be thankful that we have a central midfielder who gets 10 + a season apart from Lampard and Gerrard in the Premier League it's quite rare that a central midfielder scores that amount of goals a season, Taarabt a side from the 10/11 campaign. Vassell and Schlupp will add our pace, while Gallagher is our set piece man and a very good creative player. While Nugent can play out wide and up front on his own, he could be good at this level and like I said he proved himself at Pompey last season. While our 20 goal a season striker will come, you just have to be patient. Central Midfielders - Wellens, Abe, King, Danns, Oakley Attacking Midfielder - Gallagher Wingers - Vassell, Gallagher, Schlupp, Moussa Also with Moussa he can play an attacking role, he is very underrated at our club and you could tell last season that he has something special. I think we need potentially one attacking midfielder player I can see your point but our midfield is very competitive very defensive but also very attacking. Yes QPR had Taarabt, Norwich had Hoolahan but we have King and Gallagher who can both score goals. Going back to when we had Mark Davies, he was something that we lacked then but now we have King and Gallagher. While our new striker will come, we lost a lot of defenders after last season because they were loans, Sven wanted to make signings in the defence straight away and in my view he was right to do so because it's an important position which needs a lot of work. While our midfield has just been boosted a little by Danns, while he also brought in Nugent and is now concentrating on making a few more attacking signings one striker and possibly a winger.
