Matt Posted 22 June 2005 Posted 22 June 2005 I ment to post this yesterday but forgot anyway... UK train operators are planning to collect congestion chargesfrom passengers travelling during the rush hour in an effort to minimise overcrowding. They estimated that passenger numbers are to rise by 28 pct over the next 10 years, and one of the ways to discourage travellers to take the train during the busiest time of the day is for them to pay "rail peak pricing". Other measures needed to handle passenger growth include "selective" lengthening of trains, identification of "pinch points" on the networks, and the removal of franchise requirements to run under-used trains, according to a paper entitled "Looking Forward: Contribution to Railway Strategy" published today by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC). "While the immediate priority for rail is cost reduction and further improvement to punctuality, the high levels of growth in passenger and freight traffic means there is an urgent need to plan and implement solutions that meet future demand in ways that are financially viable," said George Muir, ATOC director general. "Rail makes a vital contribution to Britain's economy. Train operators want to see a stable well-planned railway, meeting the needs of passengers and freight customers in a way that is affordable and which contributes positively to further economic growth, to regional development, and to the environment," he said. ...So there are plans to charge drivers extra per mile, there are already congestion charges in London, and now theres plans to charge congestion charges on trains in rush hour, if more and more things like these are planned soon there will be no point in working because you will need your wages to pay to get to fukin work! There trying to "discourage" Train users to use the train, but then they moan about having to many cars on the road, but buses ain't exactly reliable are they so not many people use those....
Alexikokopops Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 So the Govt. are trying to increase car related taxes to encourage us to use Public Transport more yet Train Companies are planning to increase charges to stop us using trains during busy periods. Interesting.
Random Burglar Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 This has come from the Governement, not from the train companies..from what i believe the train companies havnt had a say so, its a cover up... damn government
Katy Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 Maybe wages need to go up in order to be able to afford all these taxes. I cant afford shit these days im on the pissing breadline as it is!
Guest Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 They know that there are people who have to use the services, this is why they are proposing it. Some commuters might even welcome this decision, being prepared to pay extra for a more comfortable journey into work. I used to have to get the bus into town everyday, and quite often I would be late for work because they wouldn't stop as it was already full. When the council made OAP bus passes useable after 9.30am, it was never full when I needed to catch it, thus ensuring my ontime arrival at work, and full pay.

We've been bored to tears for years by the government encouraging the public to use public transport more, so now that there are plans to have congestion charges it will push the public to use the trains and buses more. So what do they do? Plan to put prices up and include a congestion charge on trains at peak times! How stupid can they get? This country is heading for a chaos, I want out as soon as possible.
Phil Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 wonderful, I'm a poor student and find it hard enough as it is to pay for my train fares to/from college without all proposed added bits. and as for encouraging people to drive, how am I ment to save up for a car if I have to pay extra on the train?

stez Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 i'd pay! i've never had any trouble when using a train ever
Nationwider Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 Maybe they could use the extra revenue to pay for an extra carriage or two on Trans-Pennine "Express" (a-hem) trains? The words "battery" and "hen" spring to mind.
Steven Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 I want out as soon as possible. 126508[/snapback] I have already started planning. Would mean missing watching City play live. <_<
Nationwider Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 Maybe they'll force us to just wear satellite dishes on our heads and just send us a monthly bill for moving anywhere on anything at anytime?

(The word I am focussing on is Plan I hope everything works out for me but I ain't holding to that much hope yet because there is still lots of things to look into...) England!

If some of you students would stop voting for Grin-and-Blair-it then perhaps it wouldn't happen. Only perhaps. The sooner we get an Association of British Motorists or an Association of British Travellers with a bit of muscle and determination the better. Trouble is we get quietly kicked in our wallets every day by this ragbag of irresponsible, uncaring and ever less-than-truthful idealists and yet do nothing but yap in complaint... apart from the thousands of youngsters who are leaving these shores faster than an enema. Even the lorry drivers protest against unfair fuel charges only provoked a tepid response. Motorists and travellers will continue to get hammered while they stand and take it like a punch-drunk boxer. This Government cares SO MUCH about overcowding on the roads and on the trains that the sea port doors remain wide open despite the fact that we're already demonstrably overcrowded and our green fields are disappearing faster than our coastline (with the rising seas). The hypocrisy is definitive of Tony Blair. And if his actions are constrained by European law then its only because he's signed our decision making away.

And there's a camera on every corner. So much for England's Green and Pleasant Land.
