21st Century Fox Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Hopefully once/if Wellens is dropped we can have actually build up some tempo, we pass it around nicely but as soon as the ball hits his area of midfield the tempo turns to treacle, he seems to stifle our counter attacks quite alot. It was frustrating because we could have snatched it but an away draw and a clean sheet against a team like Cardiff isn't to be sniffed at. I don't exactly buy into to this "we should be winning games like this" especially when its said every week! I think some people to plant their feet abit.
bluesbrothers Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Considering my dream team's back four includes two leicester players, and i have Craig Mackail Smith captain up front, plus Ben Davies and a few hammers, regardless of whether we won this weekend or not, a clean sheet for city is the cherry on top. I make that pushing 40 points for one week alone... E-I-E-I-E-I-O! I can only congratulate Cardiff for managing to keep us out with what was essentially a team of crocks! That said, King and Vassell missed a sitter apiece, but overall I was pleased with the performance and, despite not scoring, we really look an attacking threat.

You're clutching at straws a bit at the moment mate - 'hopefully' etc... I dont think Sven will drop Wellens to be honest. And I don't think that thats the answer anyway. We need width and pace... I actually believe its this simple and that we arent too far off being a good side.. but we are SO pedestrian coming forward - this isn't as much of a problem at home, where we can dictate the tempo a little more.. but away from home where we need to hit on the counter...thats where the lack of width and pace becomes the real problem.
Bert Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 For me, to limit a decent home side 25 minutes of dominance is not only progress, but a sign of a decent team. Yes we didn't shoot when we really should have, or take the chances we should have - But we were resilient, and kept a clean sheet. Negativity is only going to bring us down.

Negativity or reality Bert? there were some good things today and some shite as well... we're only discussing both...
Bert Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Negativity or reality Bert? there were some good things today and some shite as well... we're only discussing both... Maybe both - But why focus on the negatives when there were positives to come out of today? That's what we must build on.

I don't mean thats the solution to all our problems but its a spanner in the works right now. There isn't much we can do about width and pace till January which is Sven's fault for not foreseeing that problem earlier but we aren't exactly playing badly we're just missing elements. I don't think Beckford played particularly badly today he just didn't get the service which is largely due to both the width/pace problem and the 5 minutes Wellens decides to stand on the ball. When Beckford had the ball speculatively put through to him in the middle he managed to squeeze between the Cardiff defence and almost got a good shot off if he hadn't had to stretch. I think with Johnson coming in and Nugent back we should have alot more bite to our attacks.

I dont think people are mate to be honest... the forum this evening is full of hope and optimism.. but to ignore those things that need improvement is daft isnt it? thats all we're doing. Defensively we look MUCH better... going forward we are too slow and Wellens and Beckford had stinkers today... They are both good players IMO and it COULD be that the formation is not suiting either of them? Just discussion Bert... its folly to say everythings hunky dory when it aint, as its daft to say its all bad, cos it aint...

I just dont feel confident in our play particularly. I'd like to think that we were playing so well that I could feel confident about the Borough game..but I don't if I'm honest..do you?
gazfox9 Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 Couldn't agree more Bert. That performance today, though not world beating, was a huge improvement on Brizzle or Reading at home. The back 5 looked as solid as any point so far this season, and despite the so called lack of creativity, we carved out a few decent chances that on another day would have finished in the back of the net. Overall, yeah we probably should've won given the circumstances, but we're deffo moving in the right direction now.
One Arm Babba Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 0-0 at Cardiff is a fine result. I'd have took a point from it before the match. Unbeaten away. I fancy us to do Boro and Derby. Things are looking up

I'm not daft, I know everything isn't "honky dory", If it was we'd be at the top of the league.
Bilbo Posted 25 September 2011 Author Posted 25 September 2011 I'm not happy we've got another post match topic. Sorry Davie G, it was meant to be a topic focusing on the positives so far from the season rather than the Cardiff game specifically.

If our defence plays like they did today I can see possibly another draw, if the rest up their game I can see us taking it à la Brighton. It was worth a 0-0 today if just for the defensive improvement.

Bilbo Posted 25 September 2011 Author Posted 25 September 2011 Interesting.... I've been genuinely surprised and, I guess, a little impressed by how EASILY PLEASED some of our fans are. I genuinely thought that the standard of football we would be playing this season would be actually a lot better than what we've seen. Given the money spent, the pre-season and all that etc etc...... I no way thought we'd be losing at home to Brizzle and to Reading - both very average teams this season. Even today, IMO Cardiff were there for the taking - they had made three subs by half time and looked completely knackered second half and we still couldnt break them down. Quality players, such as Danns and Mills have not 'hit the ground running' as I fully expected them to AND we are out of the league cup in a season when, given the squad Sven had assembled, I thought we might actually progress further. Finally, in Wellens and Beckford, I never imagined I'd see the pair of them play so badly in a game as they did today. Maybe I'm deluded and expecting too much.. however, given the fact that we have Sven as the manager and have spent shit loads, I think I have a right to feel we should be playing better than we are. A draw at Borough and a win against the Sheep Shaggers and I'll be feeling happier. I don't care about any backlash I may get for saying this... tis what I think I wouldn't say the points i brought up mean I'm easily pleased, purely that I'm a realist. Money doesn't always ensure success and playing a supposedly weaker/average side doesn't neccessarily mean a victory. Considering all the factors ie almost a completely new team, pressure from expectation etc I'm pretty pleased where we are at the minute.
Adster Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 We should be winning games like today's, end of. Sven either sorts it out or the Raksriaksorns and Whelan will get rid and quite rightly so. you twat.
J.Lisemore Posted 25 September 2011 Posted 25 September 2011 A draw away at Cardiff is a good result. A draw away at Middlesbrough would be a good result. However, they won't be seen as good results if we don't beat Derby on Saturday. Exactly. There's no point in drawing these games and calling them 'good results' if we don't win our home games. Our home form is gradually getting better so fingers crossed we can keep it up

Berner is still a good player IMO and Lloyd Dyer doesnt get a look in. It is a completely new team but this can't be used as an excuse...cos it was Sven's decision. The pressure of expectation is only there too because of the money spent and the sheer number of new players signed. Live by the sword die by the sword and all that....

I wasn't suggesting that bringing in a completely new team was the correct thing to do, that's another discussion, I was simply saying that all things considered we could be in a lot worse situation than we are now.

Anyway, we'll see and I take your points on board pal
