acooling08 Posted 20 October 2011 Posted 20 October 2011 Had a quick search for a topic on this but nothing came up? Anyway this 6 part series on Channel 4 is well worth the watch. The first one was on Saturday and they are going to be on every Saturday. For anyone who missed it, basically the programme reviews key moments of the war (the first episode was D-Day) with original footage and extended interviews with survivors. I suppose it's supposed to be the last extended WWII documentary series before the last veterans pass away. I was choked up numerous times listening to the horrific accounts of what happened. When I saw Saving Pvt Ryan I thought the action would be exaggerated for dramatic effect, but apparently not. One bloke in particular, who was injured 5 times including getting shot through the knee and having his jaw blown off by a shell, only to try and continue sums up the spirit and sacrifice given by an entire generation. I won't say anything more except for watch it, and unless you're inhuman, you'll be deeply moved.
MikeyT Posted 20 October 2011 Posted 20 October 2011 I'm a bit of a WW1 and WW2 follower. And have the utmost respect for every person that fought in those wars for our freedom. I hadn't heard of this documentary, so thanks for the info. Will definitely look it up.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 I am with you on this, as I too have a keen interest in the First and Second world ware. First hand accounts, and diaries, make me feel quite moved, and very humble.
pSinatra Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 Sounds very much like 'The Last Tommy' that featured Harry Patch from The Great War. The Last Tommy was excellent & if this is half as good.........well worth a viewing!!!

Fox92 Posted 21 October 2011 Posted 21 October 2011 These people are real heroes! They should all be knighted.

acooling08 Posted 22 October 2011 Author Posted 22 October 2011 Did anyone watch episode 2/6 today? I've recorded it so haven't seen it yet. Apparently it's about the aftermath of D-Day, fighting through France and tank warfare.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 Im pissed off I forgot again. Got flipping sky plus too. Wow! I am not the only one then? What, about wanting to to Normandy?
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 Im pissed off I forgot again. Got flipping sky plus too. What, about wanting to to Normandy? Yes. I know plenty of people go, but I meant from the Forum. I also want to do the WW1 battlefields of the Somme. I lost a Great Uncle there, with no known grave, and just feel I need, and want, to show my respect to him, and others who fell.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 I've been once already. Merville battery, Pegasus Bridge, the memorial for (was it john Howard?) As well as point du hoc, st mere eglise and one of the British beaches. I've got very interested in Easy Company 506th airborne (band of brothers) and know a lad who knows a lot of the sites where their battles took place. So really want to go with a view to going to those sites. I managed to speak indirectly to bill guarnere and babe heffron the other month which was a privilege
Magictv Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 For those that missed it... http://www.channel4.com/programmes/world-war-ii-the-last-heroes Not seen any of this yet but hopefully will get chance to watch it on 4od. Have visited some of the WWI battlefields and graveyards a few years back with my grandad, was a strange experience, shame I was a bit too young to fully get it.

You were blessed to speak to those guys you mentioned. I never really knew my Dad, as I lost my parents as a young kid, but know he was with the R.A.M.C. or attached unit at Normandy, and was injured during stretcher duty.
dave_the_fox Posted 24 October 2011 Posted 24 October 2011 I went over to Ypres, paschendale etc last year. We stayed in a place called Arras, which is well worth looking up. 20 odd thousand British troops hid underground in some medieval mines that the new Zealand miners had extended and all joined up. Then after a week or 2 (can't remember) they all came out the ground and the jerrys didn't no what hit them!

Ilkeston_Fox Posted 24 October 2011 Posted 24 October 2011 Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd plonk it in here being as it's WW2 related. There's a 4 part (I think) series starting at 9pm on BBC 2 on Tuesday about some of the key parts of the war. It starts off at Bletchly Park - decoding the enigma machine. Might be worth a look. Thanks for the link to the aforementioned series. I'll definitely catch up. As MikeyT has already alluded to, I have nothing but huge respect and admiration for those that fought and died (far too many) for this country and the freedom of the world.
