blueharmie Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 wellens is an average player, not good enough to take us out of this league. Same for abe, who in my opinion is shockingly bad. and then we have king, who is a good player but plays with a crap midfield. I really think our midfield is poor. we have no balance and no ball winner. No one is anygood at set peices. needs a complete overhaul. Our midfield bar king and johnson in time, is average championship.
mbmb10 Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 Fernandes? He's definitely premier league quality
ian the fox Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 Hopefully the new manager will suss out how crap a couple of them are ,
Cecchini1976 Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 I agree, Wellens is not good enough, to many touches before making a sideways pass. Not sure about King, when he makes runs in to the box he is excellent, but the rest of the time it's like playing with 10 men. Nothing wrong with that, but unroll Saturday, can't remember tha last time he played well, Can say that for the whole midfield, but for me Fernandes & Johnson would play every game when fit
Guest Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 You missed Danns, sure he makes an odd mistake o two but he harries everywhere on the pitch which is essential for our game. Danns, Fernandez, Johnson and King look the best 4. Wellens is a decent player but too slow and controlling.
KFS Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 In this league, winning the second ball and pressurising is the main aspect of the midfield. Fernandes, Danns, King and Jonhson would be my solid 4 purely because of their defensive qualities. Two of those four run their socks off and allow the more creative in King and Johnson to make things happen. Richie Wellens hardly presses and he has very little success in the pass, purely because he tries to play the Hollywood game. Abe is a good player to sit in front of the back four, he mops up after an attack and does the simple things well. He can close and press from what I've seen, but for me, he doesn't fit into my chosen midfield four.
thybluefox Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 Got to agree with everything in this thread. Wellens slows the game down far too much, especially for someone who is, for some reason, such a major factor on how we play when he's on the pitch.
Libertine Dream Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 Fernandes, Abe, King, Danns would be my midfield. Recently yuki has been bad but he's knackered and somebody needs to realise this. He does a fantastic job when fully fit but at the moment needs dropping until Portsmouth away.
frankiesgrandad Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 Against Derby, and let's face it we played them off the park, wellens was.at the tip of the diamond formation supporting the forwards and.looked.good. Johnson played the anchor role and got.the ball out of.defence.with.tellingpasses something that wellens dosnt do when.he plays there. Sven reversed the roles.against millwall and we went back to this stupid 6-7 passes.across the back. Bamber looks.ok.when under pressure but when he's got.time on the ball he scares.the Shit out of me . St ledger .. good .player .. on the ground . He can't head a ball. King suffered with the slow.build UPS.we had with no darting runs in to the box he suffered. Abe , fernandes and vassel to an extent.run around like.headless chickens. Nugent is a.tireless worker and class forward i think a new.manager has a good squad to work.with but he needs to.find.their best positions very quickly and .... Like I kept saying to sven... To score.goals you have to get the ball in the box .more not piss about with pretty football across your own back four.

To score goals you have to get the ball in the box more, not piss about with pretty football across your own back four. Wellens didn't play against Derby nor did Johnson, which does continue to hand ammunition to those of us who believe Wellens isn't good enough. Instead we had Fernandes sat, Danns at the point with King and Abe in the middle, and although Nugent's goal was a very quick move, 3-4 passes at most, we still had the intricate play in the midfield - the solution is not binning that, but combining the playing through the defence with quick moves through. Abe and Fernandes do not run around like headless chickens - watch them closer, they track players and pressurise the ball, their running is well considered, not aimless "headless chicken" rubbish like we saw from, amongst others, Waghorn and Hume.

Bayfox Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 doesn't matter which of them play, our problem is none of them provide width and asking our full backs to run up and down for 90 mins is leaving us exposed at the back. Wellens should be good enough for this league, but clearly doesn't want to be pushed out to the left, same with yuki, having to play right side at west ham, johnson if we ever get him fit should be able to breeze this division and I am a massive Andy King fan because of his goals but a lot of the time the rest of the game passes him by. I don't think the players are the problem it's the system, I would be tempted to play Gelson and Johnson for a run of games and then use dyer to provide a bit of width, maybe we need gally back in to play on the right otherwise that is still a problem area, by pushing king, abe or danns out there.
Guest Col city fan Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 I wouldn't get too concerned about the midfield as it currently exists. Its probable that the new manager, whoever that may be, will ring in the changes in the middle of the park as soon as possible. We still dont have that tough, ball-winning hardnut in the centre - that would be the first type of player I'd hope he goes for..with a good right winger
Fox92 Posted 31 October 2011 Posted 31 October 2011 For me, on Saturday at West Ham, I saw the real Wellens in the second half. A player that can drive with the ball when he has protection. He did so well for our first goal as well. I don't agree with you about King though, if you are going to say he is a good player in a rubbish midfield - the same can be said about all of our central midfielders. Abe need's to be playing behind the midfield offering us protection. Wellens will be able to drive with it (something he hasn't been allowed to this season because he isn't a holding man), and I'd have Danns in because he is our only central midfielder with pace. The game passes King by too much.
