flowwolf Posted 12 January 2012 Posted 12 January 2012 I know a LOT of what you write is for reaction or tongue in cheek but no it's different due to the fact of who had the social power although I think you may know that. I used to like the series Love my Neighbour by the way, shame it is no longer shown as it shows just how stupid racists are. Christ iv'e been rumbled
Guest MarshallForEngland Posted 12 January 2012 Posted 12 January 2012 ..and POM? I got called a POM in Australia, didn't think anything of it, until the guy came up to me after and apologised, I said why, he said cos he'd called me a pom, I said oh, I didn't realise it was offensive. As a honky, limey, whitey, cracker I can choose to be offended by that if I want, but it makes no sense, now if my ancestors had been enslaved for being white and I was made to feel like a second class citizen because of the colour of my skin it might be different. Lots of people say this but I don't understand why. How exactly do you inherit the hardships of your forebears? You (and many others on here and in general life) speak as if one individual can be personally burdened with the collective woes of their ancestors.
yorkie1999 Posted 12 January 2012 Posted 12 January 2012 but who was the racist in love thy neighbour

Therein lies the difference, if a term has been used as part of your abuse and domination it carries a whole diferent meaning.
Captain... Posted 13 January 2012 Posted 13 January 2012 Lots of people say this but I don't understand why. How exactly do you inherit the hardships of your forebears? You (and many others on here and in general life) speak as if one individual can be personally burdened with the collective woes of their ancestors. It is not inherited because it is not the property of the oppressed to own, oppression belongs to the oppressors, they are not allowed to forget because it is still in this society. Take the Irish, for example, they were once very heavily oppressed by the English but have now established parity and so jokes and banter with the Irish is generally accepted as not racist, but that took a loong time to establish, for the same reason we can get away with jokes about the French and the States. This is, sadly, still not the case with other minorities in England and it will take time to heal when it is still people's parents and grandparents that suffered at the hands of British colonialism. Whilst things have improved it was not that long ago that racism was broadcast as light entertainment, only as far back as the 80s. It will take a few more generations before we start seeing true acceptance on both sides of the fence, but I believe one day you will be able to make a joke about the colour of someone's skin without being labelled a racist.
David Hankey Posted 13 January 2012 Posted 13 January 2012 The world has gone mad, was the first thought when I heard this story. In a footballing sense the Florist's chant is absolutely right, we are no more an English owned Club If, however, the chant was aimed at our non-white supporters in a racist manner then that is not acceptable. Not being in attendance that day it is difficult to add further but if someone is throwing their dummy out because of the ownership situation, you are barmy. They used to be European Champions but are not anymore!!
