Police launch chant probe - Forest fans fall under the spotlight

Again a bit of a difference.....

Scrapnels right here, that video will be laughed off by the authority's and we'll be getting this ten times louder in the future.

But you don't know what they are investigating exactly, the YouTube clip is being focused on by the media because it's in the public domain.

How you know someone hasn't also reported the other abuse inside and outside the ground? If the cops know of the other stuff they will look into it. Their enquiries go a bit further than searching YouTube.

I find the Brian Clough chant an absolute disgrace and anybody that sings it should be chucked out. Harmless banter is brilliant but that just NO. Imagine if it was sung about a family member. I'm sure the players don't like hearing it and the management team will hate it. What happenes to getting behind your team? Maybe we should take a leaf out of Lech Poznan's book?

That would be copying.

Hopefully, I'd imagine after watching the reported video the first question would have been "have we actually got any racism?" and then they move onto to the actual serious incidents outside the ground that had the potential for serious disorder.

Is it isn't it?

I need to get back to Germany to watch my football and leave the English stuff to the guardian readers in mustard trousers.

Not condoning the behaviour of either fans outside the ground but im convinced some people won't stop until everyone is sat down with a coffee and a programme for 90 mins.

I just ****ing hate this attitude.

99.9% of chants at football grounds aren't racist and haven't been in my life time. You don't need to be racist or homophobic to have "banter" or to be edgey or to be funny. So why exactly is wanting a fractional minority to be educated a little better when it comes to bollocks like "town full of Pakis" or "small town in Baghdad" something worthy of scorn?

I appreciate I'm very militant in my views and I frequently take quite a hard line on stances but in the instance of racism and serious prejudice I do genuinely feel that you're either actively against it or helping it fester. We shouldn't just sweep it under the carpet because it's "not THAT bad" or it "used to be worse."

We're not talking 'PC gone mad', we're not talking about banning Ba Ba Black Sheep or black coffee because it "might offend black people." We're talking about objecting to Forest's near entire singing section singing songs that everyone with a brain took for what it was, a pop at ethnicity. You can dismiss that all you want but it's acceptance of songs like that that lead to incident's like Singhy's outside the ground - you can't defend one and condemn the other. That's not to say they're of equal severity but they are born of the same mindset, allowed to take root.

The atmosphere against Forest wasn't the best I've ever been in but it was alright, are you honestly wanting to imply that it would have immediately been shit and awful if Forest had chosen to sing about something else?

I swear everyone is so fvcking neurotic and sensationalist about everything nowadays. And to be honest that applies to both sides of this argument.

In general I agree with Finnegan but then you have people like Ultra accessory who just inflate the issue and make it bigger than it is. Then on the other side of the argument you get people saying that it's the end of passion in football and no one will be happy until only gay black disabled people who can't sing attend games.

WHY CAN'T EVERYONE JUST BE A BIT MORE REASONABLE.

These chants were out of order

Something should be done

It's not the end of the world

This fvcking pendulum type approach to pretty much every issue in the world nowadays is probably the thing that annoys me most about people. People are such dicks.

Police investigating alleged racist chants aimed at Leicester's Asian community at an FA Cup tie between Leicester and Nottingham Forest on Saturday are treating the incident as a hate crime.

Video clips posted on YouTube show a group of home fans aiming insults at Leicester City supporters inside and outside Forest's City Ground.

Two Forest fans, who could face lifetime bans, were thrown out after stewards intervened and alerted the police but they were not arrested.

Police said none of the 11 people arrested at the match were detained for alleged racist remarks but stressed investigations were continuing.

Superintendent Mark Holland of Nottinghamshire police said: "The incident is being treated as a hate crime and we are reviewing CCTV footage and following up on a number of lines of inquiry.

"We take all reports of racism very seriously."

The chanting has sparked a heated debate on fans forums which largely condemn those responsible.

Prith Singh, a City season ticket holder born in Leicester and who grew up in the shadow of Filbert Street, started one thread on the Foxes Talk forum.

He said: "I heard the racist chants in the City ground and I was subjected to abuse outside the ground when I was leaving."

He said: "We all like a bit of banter, but racist and homophobic chanting is derogatory and should not be allowed in 2012. Firm action must be taken."

Fellow City fan Kevin Coe, 44, from St Andrew's, Leicester, said: "It was disgusting and must be stamped out. I hope those responsible are banned. I was with my mate who is Asian and he and his son were visibly upset."

Leicester author and keen Liverpool supporter Bali Rai joined the debate on Twitter and said: "Racist issues in football are receiving high profile in the media at the moment. I have no time for racist chants."

Editor of The Fox Fanzine Gary Silke, who has followed City for 37 years, was at the game but did not hear the chants.

He said: "Racist chants are totally unacceptable but there are always a few idiots who make them. You try to ignore it but it is still bubbling underneath. However, it is a thousand times better than it used to be."

A Forest spokesman said: "Nottingham Forest have zero tolerance attitude towards any inappropriate language at The City Ground.

"Any incidents of racial or abusive language reported to us during the game against Leicester City were dealt with immediately and the necessary action was taken.

"The club will work with the police and continue to investigate any incidents reported. We support all police prosecutions where alleged racism is involved."

He said: "Our stewards identified two men who were allegedly making racist chants and they were removed."

The third round match ended in a 0-0 draw and the replay will be at the King Power Stadium on Wednesday January 18.

Yeah I bet, "you used to be English, not anymore"

Think they will get 2 or 3 years?

Yeah fvck it you only get community service for beating the shite out of someone on a four to one basis , so they will probably get elocution lesson on how to say Leicester instead of Lestah.

You seem more put out by the complaints than the Forest fans. You don't believe that the 'Used to be English' chants were about anything other than the ethnicity of Leicester do you?

If it was cos of foreign ownership, they'd be singing it every other week.

Thing is with all this unnecessary witch hunt and subsequent press mass hysteria every club will now be singing it at us. Oh the Irony of it all.

I consider the Salford shooting a hate crime

Not some petty chant sang by 2 year olds. grow some balls there a main rival.

Doesn't help that being right next to my student diggs :/

I don't think they are paying much attention to the "used to be English chants" as I have said a number of times because I have spoken to someone dealing with the situation, They are looking into finding the Forest fans who racially abused a Leicester fan outside of the ground. You've all seen the video as it was posted on here, It's now gone off you tube. Both the Nottingham police and City ground staff are doing their up most to resolve it, can we not at least credit them for that?

Interesting that people were ejected for racist chanting.

Even more interesting that they were not arrested for racist chanting , as far as I am aware that is a crime in this country.

yes it is, but taking personal details and then ejecting te individual means you quickly retain your resources to deal with other issues. The offenders can then be dealt with slow time, they will almst certainly get a long ban and due to the current enquiry/ complaints will more than likely face a criminal prosecution so may end up with two lots of penalties.

The atmosphere against Forest wasn't the best I've ever been in but it was alright, are you honestly wanting to imply that it would have immediately been shit and awful if Forest had chosen to sing about something else?

To be honest I think I made the post referring to this just after I had watched the Wimbledon 99 semi and thats what brought it on, that night it was 8,000 odd (mainly rough) blokes between the age of 18-40, it made me think that night there was nothing anyone could chant at us that anyone gave a shit about or that could ruin it for everyone, so I think I was talking about the difference in our travelling support in ten years rather than anything else. I thought the support at Forest was absolutely dire tbh and I can't believe anyone who has followed City to any of the big away trips in the 90's could disagree. It's old fashioned but when you see a massive following that involves a shitload of women and kids the atmosphere is going to be a bit wank. I'm willing to accept the years of 5,000+ pissed up blokes as representative of a football club going to Vienna is a thing of the past though. Great in a way but also awful in another way.

I can't agree that you either that you have to be either helping it fester or totally against,. like one of the posters above said, there has to be a sensible point somewhere in the middle of someone like me and Accessory and that's what the police and football clubs need to be aiming for. I don't think me saying I dont believe action should be taken over a "You used to be English" chant quite equates me to condoning some of the stuff that happened outside the ground. If it does then I think the people analysing it need to show a little bit more common sense on the issue.

One thing is for sure, our supporters better be squeaky clean tuesday, because they will be looking for absolutely anything to slander this football club.

I want to see this act as a deterrent. As Finners said, there are ways of being edgy and not crossing the line by resorting to racist, homophobic or songs about tragedies.

People need to know that their actions could have a consequence if it's out of line.

Don't understand why we feel the " you used to be English" chant is taken as derogatory , after all we are not a quaint little vicar of Dibley type place any more are we ?

In fact we should take it as a complement an acknowledgement of our multi cultural city we now live in. Perhaps we could sing back " we're so multi it's unbelievable"

It's about more than that though isn't it. If the other stuff hadn't gone on they may well have been given the benefit of the doubt. The press have latched on to that part as it was freely available on the net.
