Babylon Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 At that point where Reading went on that run, had they gone a year without back-to-back wins? It doesn't matter, they still had around the same points as us. What difference does it make if their record was WWLDLDLDWW and ours is WDLWDLWDLW you still get the same points for both.
Corky Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 That's brilliant WDL work Babs. You've obviously put a lot of effort and thought into it. Have some sweets.
Kitchandro Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 Reading also had Shane Long, who I feel made a massive difference. We don't have anyone as prolific as he was last season. Nor do we have two good wingers, as they did. It's not rocket science, you organise the defence, you get players who can unlock a defence and someone who can finish chances off. The only one of those that we really have is the latter, and as you say even though we have Nugent we don't quite have Long.
8starstriker8 Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 1 team usually makes a dash for the playoffs that are currently mid table. no reason why we can't be that team. we by far have the strongest team over the others around us. COYB IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!!!
Kitchandro Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 It's not clinging, it can be done. Reading had not been good enough this time last year either. Which is exactly why they were only one point better off than we are now. We have the team to do it, we've made many of the top teams in this division look like chumps on our day. If we find a way of keeping the players motivated and focused against teams below us you never know. As I keep saying it's improbable not impossible. The chances are we won't get close, but it aint over til it's over. It's not clinging, it can be done. Reading had not been good enough this time last year either. It's my view that we deserved to beat Manchester City last season at home, we were better than them on the day. But that doesn't mean we're good enough to mount a Premiership title challenge. I think you exaggerate when you say 'many of the top teams'. We've beaten Southampton twice yes, but the first time we made them look anything but chumps, we were rescued by Kasper in a game in which we were second best for the whole of the second half. The second time we played very well but they were missing their two best players and they still should have scored a couple, but were let down by bad finishing. I can't believe Cardiff are in the play-off places from what I've seen from two games against them this season. Other than that, we've only beaten Blackpool from the top 8. Players can play very well in some games but if they don't do it on a regular basis then they aren't good enough, not for the for the first team anyway. I can't think of many games at all where we've played well as a team, and I could say the same about a lot of individuals. How many good games has Wellens had this season? Very few. Beckford's come into form recently but he's still missing chances. I could count the games Danns has impressed me in on one hand. Mills has had as many poor games as bad ones. Gallagher's probably had more poor than good. Peltier's form has been terrible since Christmas. Dyer is shocking most of the time. And Drinkwater is now injured. This season could be extended by another 10, 15 or even 25 games and I still don't think we'd get in the play-offs. We are inconsistent because the players just aren't that good. They can have the odd good or even very good game but they aren't good enough to perform on a consistent basis. I don't think it's just an attitude thing though that probably is a factor.
Babylon Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 I think you exaggerate when you say 'many of the top teams'. We have played 6 games against the top CURRENT top 4 and the record is WWWWDL. Not forgetting when we played games against Boro earlier in the year and Brighton and Derby they were all top 4 at the time and we came away with DWW. When we lost to Reading and Birmingham they were both well below us in the table at the time. If you look at where teams actually were when we played them (rather than where they are now) then there is quite a clear correlation in our results.
LCFC_FAN_1995 Posted 16 February 2012 Posted 16 February 2012 I think we need to aim for 2 league wins in a row first

Yes but that's sort of my point, the best teams at the end of the season will be in the top 6 then, not part way through the season. We may have thrashed Derby and beaten Brighton but time has proved that they are not actually that good, just like our team. Boro may still get in the top 6 but then again we haven't beaten them.
Donut Posted 17 February 2012 Posted 17 February 2012 The expression ''clutching at straws'' comes to mind
ozleicester Posted 17 February 2012 Posted 17 February 2012 If you think its bad now.... just wait till this time next week when others around us have picked up points and we havent played

But they were that good at the time of playing them, we still had to play them when "on form". Anyway Record versus top half... Record versus top bottom half...
