Parafox Posted 6 April 2012 Author Posted 6 April 2012 Does anyone remember the Wartburg? It had a Wankel rotary engine. I never owned one but I knew a guy who did. Said it was the quietest most fuel efficient car ever (circa 1972). I was young then and intrigued by the Wankel... (ahem)

Hence, you can get one of these (which I coveted a lot when they were first out) for next to nothing.

Revolutionary... Geddit? Oh no here we go again...

Saxondale Posted 10 May 2012 Posted 10 May 2012 Just bought myself a new car, picking it up tomorrow. SAAB 9-3 Vector Sport TID estate.
stez Posted 10 May 2012 Posted 10 May 2012 a) The first car you owned (not your dads) and it's demise mark2 escort; all the cool kids had them, when i was a lad. it was the same colour as the one above but, in no way, the same condition. mine had the square lights, though. until i got some round ones from a scrappy. it was a fun car, which would break down in the rain (vasaline round the dizzy cap sorted that) the front lights were mended with foil, the fuses where mostly replaced with foil and ones feet would get soaked as the were several massive holes in the wheel arches. oh and the exaus was repared with several tin cans. i loved it! (in retrospect) the scrappy is where it ended up. i drove it in and got 25 quid for it. my next 4 cars, also, went to the scrappy. b) The worst car you've owned (reliability, street cred, financial outlay etc) mg metro; impossible to drive, impossible to select the correct gear (the gear stick didn't bounce the the middle, like in normal cars) and the wheels kept (threatening) the fall off. part chopped for a punto c) The best car or most memorable (in positive terms... could include first encounter with the opposite sex)! mk1 punto; (above was my second one, but i'm talking about the first one which was bought brand new (i'm never doing that again) but the colour and the wheels and the arbarth trimming were the same). the first one was the first car i dared to take out f the county of leicstershire, whithout fearing i'd never get home again it took me all over the shop and never once let me down, however katy pranged it and i ended up selling it. i'd have a punto now, if it were up to me. after that went i spiralled back into a well of shit cars, except the bmw 316 (which gets an honourable mention coming a close 2nd to the punto): which was a dream to drive, but pricey to fix d) The car you currently own (or lease from work) astra g; after a tricky start, with various engine and break problems this little beauty is proving to be a lovely car to drive. and is the first car i've owned made in this century. e) The car you would realistically most like to own, classic or modern either a TVR griffith 500 or a mark2 cortina lotus (ignore the bloke looking at the austin maxi while theres a lotus cortina to look at!) edit: actually he might be looking at an austin wolseley, in which case i'll let him off

kyle09uk Posted 10 May 2012 Posted 10 May 2012 1st car at 17 was a renault clio T Reg. Then I bought a Fiat Brava that's a beaut to drive. But must have cost us easily over a grand. Now looking at a Daihatsu Terios, its only a 1.3 and insurance is pretty cheap for me too with The quotes I found. Does any1 no much about them. I'm hoping its more reliable seeing as its a Jap But think the parts might cost abit.

Parts will cost a tad more than Ford or Vauxhall etc but you shouldn't need to be buying many parts from them. The technology on them is fairly simple. The later ones in particular command a little bit of a premium on the used car market now because IM are no longer importing Daihatsus due to the weakness of the pound against the yen.

UpTheLeagueFox Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 First: Y-reg chocolate-coloured Metro (okay it was brown) Worst: Rover 75 (but had two other Rover 75s which were fantastic) Best: S-reg red Rover 600, the leather interior, silver Rover 75 or current car (can't decide) Current: Insignia SE Nav Dream: Jaguar
Ilkeston_Fox Posted 11 May 2012 Posted 11 May 2012 First car was a 1.3i R reg Fiat Punto, it cost me the grand total of £500, but was perfect to run around in. No major problems with it. (Though due to how good (touch wood) my other two cars have been, this qualifies for the worst car) Best car, has to be my second, purely for it's MPG. It was a W Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec, it's MPG was astronomical. Current car is a 56 Ford Focus 1.8, decent on it's MPG but not as good as the other Focus. I do a few motorway miles and fancied a slightly bigger engine so I wasn't ragging it. Dream car would be 1 of three. A 2.5 Turbo Focus ST 225 bhp and will cream almost every everyday car - not that you can do that of course A Skoda Octavia VRS 2.9, again I've had the pleasure of being in one when they've been pushed to their limit and I can guarantee they'd surprise a few people, truly fast car! The third would be a Civic Type R 2.5, good build quality (Japanese) and a good looking car, if a bit dated now.

Ah yes, I love any car that has a lot of twinkly lights surrounding the driver... looks complicated and lie it needs an expert to understand them all. Although in actual fact most are to do with tuning the radio and setting the air-con!

I have driven a 16 (I think) it was awful. And, as a full time road user, they always seem to be driven by old men who can't get above 25 miles per hour (probably due to arthritic knees or something) and pull out in front without ACTUALLY really looking first.
Leicfox Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 First Car...Mini Metro Worst Car - As above. Best Car...Audi 80 Sport Current Car...Actual pic of my car. Toyota Celica Dream Car...Dads Mk2 Jag - Actual pic of his car.

UpTheLeagueFox Posted 12 May 2012 Posted 12 May 2012 Sorry but I can't abide any kind of Rover. Each to their own and no problem with that. Rover's were good, solid, reliable cars for me - had about six of them in total. Only one of them ****ed me around, the rest were superb. The last one I had was like shiit off a shovel. That said, most people who drive them are old grandads. I bucked the trend
Basingstoke Fox Posted 13 May 2012 Posted 13 May 2012 I sold my first car on the Monday just gone . A lovely Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.25. Was a brilliant first car, never let me down and was great to drive for a car with a small engine. Plus I miss my speakers & sub that I had in it already! When I was younger, I always said that my dream (realistic) car would be a VW Golf GTI, so that's exactly what I bought! Its great fun to drive and definitely much quicker than my old car but damn does it drink a lot of petrol! I took a picture of my cars together before my Fiesta was picked up: I loved you, I loved you, I loved you. And everywhere we travelled, we travelled, we travelled, 'Cause you're my Ford Fiesta, Fiesta, Fiesta, And that's the way I liked it, I liked it, I liked it, WOOOOOAAAHHHHHHHHH
MC Prussian Posted 6 July 2012 Posted 6 July 2012 Just seen one in real life for the very first time - and I have to admit, they're gorgeous:
