You've kind of answered you own question, The national is a lottery, yes there is form, yes there are better horses than others but in the national form sort of goes out the window. I normally pick a couple of the favourites, a couple of that are mid-range odd around 20 - 30/1 then maybe a rank outside of 66/1 or something. I like the look of Syncronised (Won the Midlands national, Welsh national, Gold Cup) (8/1 Favourite), Seabass (Ruby Walsh's sister riding) (20/1), The Midnight Club (40/1) they are just 3 i've picked out not really had a proper look yet though.

Salieri Posted 13 April 2012 Posted 13 April 2012 McCoy on the favourite, surely a massive chance? Think i'll lump on Synchronised to win plus a lively outsider each way, any suggestions?
lcfcadam Posted 14 April 2012 Posted 14 April 2012 Just stuck a fiver E/W on Synchronised. £10 stake - if he places top 6 (surely??) I make a crisp fiver, if he wins I make about fifty quid. Hopefully as close as I could come to a no-lose situation with the National...

Which makes picking a horse all the more difficult. 10 years ago you'd not even consider Synchronised could win with top weight. Now I'm not so sure. He was making a few mistakes on the way round at Cheltenham which is a worry but he clearly stays well enough.

The weight does make a difference its the same with any handicap, the only difference in the national these days is the quality of horse that feature in it. Gone are the days where the national was a true grade 3 race, these days its full of grade 1 horses that are top of the game in chasing, mainly due to the course being made safer which means less risk of these valuable horses dying and also because of the prize money involved. The fact a top staying horse like Giles Cross is going to carry over a stone less than Synchronised makes a huge difference over 4 miles especially when there is 3 points between them in the ratings, Synchronised won't win! My top 4 are 1) Giles Cross, 2) Cappa Bleu, 3) Seabass, 4) The Midnight Club

Mon Mome won with something like 11-5 which hasn't been done for a lon long while. The course has arguably not been made safer at all, there are just as many fatalities these days after years of modifying it. It certainly is easier to jump round though. I will still be surprised if Synchronised wins but he's got more chance than the Gold Cup winners of yesteryear which have had a go.
