Cutty Sark Restored

Five years after she was gutted by fire, London's famous 19th century tea clipper the Cutty Sark will reopen to the public this week.

Many feared a unique piece of maritime history had been lost but on Wednesday the Queen will officially reopen the ship, following a £50 million conservation project.

Tim Muffett joined Richard Doughty of the Cutty Sark Trust on board for a special preview.

looks great, that guy is great too. they should keep him there to show everyone around. i look forward to being able to see it.

I've always wanted to see the Cutty Sark, can't think why though, above any other ship. It is kind of a shame though that much of what you see now won't actually be the The Cutty Sark, but a replica (though of course you could argue that with any historical building or engineering achievement, a lot of the parts would have been replaced from the very first outfitting.)

Should I post: Cutty sark isn't that a type of dress? or £50m and mostly from the lottery money. How ridiculous!!!!!!!

Heard it cost twice as much as promised too.

Don't suppose they ever busted anyone for setting fire to it in the first place?

Heard on BBC Breakfast this morning that it was caused by someone accidentally leaving an industrial vacuum on overnight which overheated. That sucks but at least it wasn't arson.

Whoops!

Was just reading that they only lost 2% of the ship as most of it was off site being renovated. Amazing considering the size of the fire

It's annoying though cos I'm in Greenwich tomorrow so I gotta go through all the traffic jams and what not is caused by everyone wanting to see the Queen <_<

Spose I just have to bare the traffic then. Despite being a South Londoner I've never actually been inside the Cutty Sark :o

So its essentially a brand new 'replica'?

Nope, its the same one. well about 90% is

Blimey that's impressive.

I don't know the exact figure, but if only 2% of it was destroyed and most of it was at a depot then it should be 90%+ real

You probably suffer from the same "I'll-Get-Round-To-It-One-Day" syndrome that I have and I think afflicts many people, where, when something is just on your doorstep, you keep putting it off. I'm the same with the National Space Centre. I'm pretty sure that if it were in Nottingham or Birmingham I'd have visited it by now.

and if 2% cost £50m, we're lucky it wasn't 80%
