"Trolling" - A Critical Discussion......

Says it all really

It doesn't really say it all though.

These are artists putting their art out there and expect some criticism, and stupid over the top criticism isn't going to bother them.

It is when people troll memorial sites and normal people that are perhaps looking for acceptance, or even just trolling certain users on a forum, it can and has caused a lot of grief and upset and in one case someone to take their own life.

I know it is the daily mail, but the article is quite extensive.

There is a line and I think everyone on here knows what it is there are a few posters that antagonise each other but nothing more than you would expect from a community of thousands, and very rarely gets personal, there is also a lot of black humour on here, for example the death list, which is in poor taste, but in essence it is harmless as nobody on the list would ever visit this site, however if people started putting Leicester players or other users on the list then I think that would be going too far.

Why the shit do people start Facebook pages for dead people? It's just more of the public displaying of faux grief that has become de rigeur since Diana hit the wall. I've never had a friend or relation die that had one - and if some twat set one up I certainly wouldn't visit it.

I had the same problem with RIP threads on here a few years ago. Every week someone would start a thread for a croaker which would then be duly filled by the lobotomised post "RIP". They'd never met the person, didn't know them but for a PR image and yet felt compelled to type three letters into a thread so everyone could publicly see how torn apart they were and how their world would never be the same again. RIPCKS.

Goading those who are genuinely in mourning, who have actually suffered the loss, is despicable...but for fvck sake Britain: Give Facebook a fvcking rest.

While I agree, it inspired a kinda funny thread.

Worse:

  • God bless you Muamba
  • Praying for Muamba
  • and unknown other people's tweets in some kind of gigantic Twitter wankfest of make-believe misery

Also, I've seen people post a picture, most of the time being a kid with cancer, a progeria sufferer etc, saying something like 'Like if you feel sorry for her, 1 like = 1 prayer". What the flying fvck is that all about?

"I have had a wank today for cancer. We all know someone who has cancer or who has died of it or someone who has claimed to have it in order to get a sympathy fvck. Together, by wanking, we can help them all. Who knows, if enough of us all wank at the same time we could actually cure cancer for ever. I know 87% of my Facebook friends will not have the guts to post this on their Timeline but 15% will - are you going to be one of the tenth of my true friends who has the strength to do it too?"

You are right of course, I should have put "that says it all about a certain limited type of trolling". There are clearly different types and levels of trolling which I failed to acknowledge.

You're right these people are cvnts, just like those that put flowers on lampposts where people have died, or on graves, I get so angry that I can see graveyards sometimes, not to mention those utter cvnts who have funerals driving their mawkish black cars along my road when I want to go somewhere.

Of course I am trolling you, I kinda agree in some respect, about the RIP threads and twitter grieving, but it is not for us to decide how people should express their grief, most of those facebook pages are started by those that genuinely care about the deceased and want to share and give people a chance to join in, it is not compulsory and it really shouldn't affect anyone that would have no interest in it.

Not for you maybe - but I'm perfectly comfortable with my statement that there's something seriously wrong with the brain of a person who thinks a Facebook memorial site is in anyway a good idea.

Why not? How is it any different to an announcement in a local newspaper, or a memorial bench, or flowers and tributes tied to the lamppost of a fatal traffic accident?

Some people in their lives reach out much further than their physical confines, people have a "virtual presence" so maybe it is fitting to have a virtual memorial where the people around the world that have met them through sites like facebook have a chance to offer condolences and grieve.

Imagine a regular FT user died, would you disagree with someone making a thread about it, to inform people and allow people a chance to say goodbye, death is a big scary thing (the biggest and scariest in my opinion) and there is no right or wrong way to deal with it.

That's a very good point as it has already happened and it pretty well proves your point .

It isn't, I think all of those are more about the living than the dead too.

Grieving someone you knew and loved is one thing.

RIP and the rest for people you didn't is pathetic.

That Diana fiasco made me want to vomit.

The Muamba one was pethtic as well.

and that foolish druggie pop star.

I missed your point about "scaryness" of death.

I don't find it at all scary, inevitable but not scary. Maybe that's why I have a different view.

The only time I'd find death scary is if I'd won £120m on the lottery. I'd want to drag life out as long as possible!!!!! :D

I'd go further than that.

Social media has spawned a new phenomena... The Professionally Mourner.

They sit around just waiting for another tragedy to latch on to, and it is very very non pc to ever criticize this.

Whilst I'm sure most wont agree, in my opinion this continues into the likes of Help for Heroes charities where people mourn soldiers they never knew that are doing a god awful job for no tangible benefit.

Then they achieve self gratification by raising money for such charities.

I'm scared of tea-time.

You'd have to see my wife's cooking in order to appreciate that.

The worst was Jade Goody, but these are separate issues to people creating Facebook memorials for their friends and families and having them defaced and abused. Celebrity mourning is a pst-time for some and, whilst I don't approve of those that troll these sites, such as those posting things about Jackson after he went to kiddy fiddler's heaven, they at least have some knowledge of the deceased. When they are normal people who died and people think it is ok to make photoshop images of them dying it goes to far.

Daggers is right, these things are for the benefit of the living, the dead are gone, they get nothing from it, it is for those that have lost someone to see how much they were loved and cared about, and maybe see their life wasn't in vain because it touched a lot of people. When people troll these sites they are not hurting the dead, but the living, the ones that are genuinely suffering.
