Nick Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 Okay so, 'Trolling' - it's all a bit subjective. Trolling is defined on wiki as: The "trollface", first appearing in 2008, is often used to indicate trolling in contemporary internet culture.[1]Modern usage of the word itself dates from 1980s. In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4] The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted." And more serious still: While the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels subjective, with trolling describing intentionally provocative actions and harassment outside of an online context. For example, mass media has used troll to describe "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."[5][6] The issue being whilst definition 2 is closer to how I see it, definition 1is surely a bit out there in terms of the act being an intent to provoke an emotional response..... surely that covers jokes, stories, humour in general? People use the word on this forum a little readily and possibly out of context? When does sarcasm become trolling? Your constructive views please.............. (NO TROLLING OR OFF TOPIC DISCOURSE WILL BE TOLERATED OR ELSE............nothing... except the thread may well be boring)
Harry - LCFC Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 I've always seen it as just a bit of a joke, I'd define it as leading someone on to believe one thing and then dispelling those beliefs somehow (in a humorous manner). A sort of casual trolling. The media would perhaps refer to a troll as the 2nd definition you gave - something altogether more nasty and malicious.
Guest Bilo Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 Based on that definition of trolling, I'd say a solid 50% of my posts were in the category. The first one obviously, not the second. It's fair to say that the term is emotive and subjective, one person's trolling might be another's sense of humour. Christ, look at the 68 Years Ago thread. Pretty standard for a thread to go off topic like that when the intelligent and/or serious discussion has run its course, it doesn't make it any less entertaining. Yet an outsider looking in would probably conclude it had been trolled badly and that you, LargeAl, Daggers and myself were cold-hearted computer nerds with an empathy bypass. It's all about context and perceptions, we know that that kind of thing is harmless fun and par for the course on this site. This is why defining what fits into the first category is so difficult. Obviously anyone indulging in the second category specifically to cause upset is a wand but how often is that actually seen? Even with that, one man's edgy joke is another man's trolling. Like nailing jelly to a wall this.
Harry - LCFC Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 Wow, getting into a fairly deep and intellectual discussion here. Who knew this was such an important subject?
The Doctor Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 Trolling is simply taking the topic off course? I think most posters need themselves a bridge then.
ithuriel Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 These days it might just be me but it seems a lot harder to spot trolls since the online community is a lot more abrasive than it used to be a decade ago, courtesy and manners have long been lost to keyboard warriors so i do wonder if the troll still exists in this day and age?
ozleicester Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 TROLLIST!!!! im tired of the anti troll attitudes so prevelant on thi site.
Captain... Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 For me trolling has been posting something that you don't actually believe or think purely to get a reaction, it is not trolling to take a topic off course unless done so deliberately for the purpose of causing offence and getting a reaction. In the 68 years ago thread, Nick's post could only be considered trolling if does not represent his views that Stu should "let it go", whether right or wrong to post that, a genuine expression of an opinion, however done is not trolling. Now if he had posted something he didn't believe, such as saying that all war is unjust and murder and we should pay tribute to those that butchered thousands of people, then it would be trolling. I think that some of the cases in the media recently are quite sickening, trolling memorial pages, and the incident with Muamba, and it is something that may need to be addressed in schools, make people aware that posting anonymously on an internet forum can still be as damaging as saying it to someone's face.
davieG Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 davieG is the biggest troll on here. I'm not sure about biggest maybe the oldest.
davieG Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 Actually I always assumed it was some one that did nothing but 1or 2, someone occasionally provoking me is not trolling if they're a regular member with regular posts or to put it another way you can't be a part-time troll.
Zingari Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 Trolls don’t bother me in the slightest. They’re usually pretty easy to spot and ignore, and the mods do a good job getting rid of them or deleting anything too offensive. I think there is another quite different problem in that some posters believe themselves to be beyond contradiction , or so infallible in their opinions , that anyone who argues with them must be a troll , an idiot , or both . Don't take forums too seriously is my best advice I get a lot of pleasure from most of you lot , even if you are a bunch of tools
Rincewind Posted 9 June 2012 Posted 9 June 2012 There was one on Twitter posing as a religious fundamentalist. He started with another who admitted that it started off as a joke but felt it went on too far. I am not sure about the other several times he has said his account has been hacked. I have blocked him myself as some of his posts were hate filled vile rubbish. He complained that his family had received threats. But now I have seen posts that says he does not have a family or live where he said he did. I am not bothered about him because as I said I have blocked him. But he seems so genuine however sick he is. Can't believe that anyone fooling around would carry it on so long.
