Monk Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 My wife's american so I tend to follow this all fairly closely. It never ceases to amaze me how popular Romney is. He's basically about as right wing as the BNP, he's a massive racist, and has openly said he'd support a war with Iran. His whole TV ad campaign is a smear, and he basically has no policies. On foreign policy he's an absolute failure. Hoping to move to America in a few years, but it won't be happening any time soon if this lunatic gets into power.
breadandcheese Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 Hopefully, with a candidate like Romney, the floating voters will be galvanised to vote for Obama. I don't think Obama's been a particularly good president. If anything, he's been positively unspectacular, however, I'm not sure Romney is the answer.

Quite so , but much more importantly he is very good looking , has nice hair , nice teeth, a lovely smile and he encompasses the all American look and that makes him a winner in my book.

What's not to love? Especially the bit where he hates gays, non-whites and non-christians.

Let's face it Barack's campaign was basically turning up, being black and shouting "Yes we can". US Politics seems more X Factor than ours from the time I have spent there.

Guest MattP Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 Yeah usually a prerequisite for success in the States. Certainly is now, just make a joke about affirmative action over there and see how uptight they get. Anyone know what percentage of the black vote Obama got last time?

I don't like the system they have to be honest but yes I'd always be voting Republican given it's pretty much a two way choice there.
21st Century Fox Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 Oreo. I find it strange how you can trot out a term like that but be so vehemently against that sort of thing under different circumstances.

Fair enough man...if I may, may I ask why? Which Republican policies are attractive to you? You see, I can't see any of their major policies at all that I would consider even remotely attractive so I'm trying to understand what it is about them that makes many people vote for them term in term out. Purely for knowledge sake.

Oh Matthew just because someone shares the same broad space as you on the political spectrum, doesn't mean they will necessarily make a good leader.
21st Century Fox Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 It's called taking the piss. Just found it weird as I remembered your views on the Frazier/Ali 'Uncle Tom' stuff.

I quite agree, look at the amount of voters in this country so obsessed with not voting Conservative that they actually voted to keep a man like Gordon Brown at the helm. If you create a system that has it like the Americans do though you have to nail your colours to the mast of one of the parties. Just found it weird as I remembered your views on the Frazier/Ali 'Uncle Tom' stuff. Very different. Every time I've used Oreo in front of a black guy in the US it's been treated as light-hearted banter, Uncle Tom certainly wouldn't be treated the same way, even more so in the overtly racist and bullying way Ali used it towards a man like Frazier.

Opening my question to the floor seeing as I haven't had an answer yet...any people from the right wing on here want to elaborate on why they would want Romney in the Oval Office?
Guest MattP Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 Opening my question to the floor seeing as I haven't had an answer yet...any people from the right wing on here want to elaborate on why they would want Romney in the Oval Office? Because he's right wing?
leicsmac Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 Because he's right wing? Not to mention being massively unlikeable and having all the charisma of a wet haddock? The Repubs are going to lose this November for the same reason the Dems lost in 2004 - they've put up a candidate amongst infighting who is totally unelectable. But I digress and ask again: what about his policies are attractive?
Monk Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 Quite an outrageous set of accusations. Let's face it Barack's campaign was basically turning up, being black and shouting "Yes we can". US Politics seems more X Factor than ours from the time I have spent there. Not really. His view on gays is well documented. Just google it. His recent trip to Europe had so many faux pas it made Boris Johnson look like a well composed politician. The first post of this thread is just one example of his smear campaign on obama, and most of Obama policies that he disputed he just re phrases as his own. Eg healthcare. Having said that I do know it's a two way thing and obamas campaign certainly isn't free of smear. His views on Iran were expressed very publicly this week when he was in Israel. Evidence that he is racist? Again this week you only have to look at his speech on Palestine to find it. So, not really outrageous.
21st Century Fox Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 Romney's sucess/failure will probably hinge on whether large swaths of the Christian right decide to abstain from voting due to his Mormon faith. As an aside he stayed at a guest house owned by my friends Gran when he was on his European Mormon mission for a while in the 60's. Apparently she had to tell him to stop trying to convert other guests at the breakfast table.
Jordan Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 While I'd nitpick on a few points, this piece by traditional conservative columnist David Brooks of the NY Times gives a pretty good sense of both the malaise surrounding this campaign and some of its causes. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/31/opinion/brooks-dullest-campaign-ever.html?_r=1&hp
