marko Posted 9 October 2012 Posted 9 October 2012 Crazy, crazy man is jumping out of a glorified plastic bag from 120,000ft/36.5760km/22miles/a bloody long way up. He hopes to break the sound barrier. Here's a live feed if anyone is interested! http://www.redbullstratos.com/ Mods, I couldn't see that anyone else had posted a link, but please delete if they have.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 9 October 2012 Posted 9 October 2012 Anyone heard about this, due to happen in s couple of hours over new mexico? Nut case. Does anyone know of any live links?
I am Rod Hull Posted 9 October 2012 Posted 9 October 2012 Red Bull only sponsor sports that can kill the participants....
NewburyFox Posted 9 October 2012 Posted 9 October 2012 I did a 2.5 mile (13,000ft) skydive in the summer, that was high enough for me "He is going to jump out of a balloon at more than 120,000ft (36.5km) above Roswell, New Mexico. In the near vacuum at that altitude, he should accelerate beyond about 690mph (1,110km/h) within 40 seconds. Where he is going, the air pressure is less than 2% of what it is at sea level, and it is impossible to breathe without an oxygen supply." Mad.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 9 October 2012 Posted 9 October 2012 It's been called off. Hes bottled it. Wimp
leicsmac Posted 9 October 2012 Posted 9 October 2012 Forced to cancel for today due to high winds...damn shame. Hopefully he'll be able to do it tomorrow.
Craig Posted 9 October 2012 Posted 9 October 2012 Hot air balloon doesn't take off due to wind shocker. Still, keeps everyone talking about Red Bull for a day or two longer doesn't it?
anotherharboroughfox Posted 9 October 2012 Posted 9 October 2012 Hot air balloon doesn't take off due to wind shocker. Still, keeps everyone talking about Red Bull for a day or two longer doesn't it? It's not only a publicity stunt for Red Bull, but a demonstration of human progress in technology. And you'd hope this will gather interest in Science and Physics, which can only lead to further progress.
marko Posted 14 October 2012 Author Posted 14 October 2012 Looks like it could well be going ahead today! Earliest launch is looking around 4.30.
Kyle_Le_Don Posted 14 October 2012 Posted 14 October 2012 Any news... watched the guy that did the free fall using a helium balloon.
marko Posted 14 October 2012 Author Posted 14 October 2012 Any news... watched the guy that did the free fall using a helium balloon. Balloon's inflated, looks like a go! http://www.redbullstratos.com/live/
leicsmac Posted 14 October 2012 Posted 14 October 2012 About to head through 20000ft, all looks nominal right now. Amazing stuff. Edit: ascending quickly now, but as the air gets thinner the rate of ascent will decrease. It's going to take him about 2 hours to get to jump altitude.
Dan Posted 14 October 2012 Posted 14 October 2012 32,500ft up now, as if he's going 4 times higher than this, what the hell
leicsmac Posted 14 October 2012 Posted 14 October 2012 Is this on TV? http://www.redbullstratos.com/live/ Live webcast, but no TV reports I don't think. Passing through jetstream now...will probably see his lateral (side-to-side) speed pick up rapidly here.
leicsmac Posted 14 October 2012 Posted 14 October 2012 Passing through 40000ft, jet stream has pushed the lateral speed up to nearly 120 mph. That's some wind.
