ADK Posted 17 October 2012 Posted 17 October 2012 What's the point in San Marino's presence in any World Cup qualifying group? 1 win in their entire history. With all due respect, why are they there? So that Scotland arnt the worst team in Europe?
flowwolf Posted 17 October 2012 Posted 17 October 2012 What's a walking pole? Is it a long walking stick? No it's someone who can't afford the train fare from Warsaw.
flowwolf Posted 17 October 2012 Posted 17 October 2012 What's the point in San Marino's presence in any World Cup qualifying group? 1 win in their entire history. With all due respect, why are they there? Because they are better than Scotland.
Alf Bentley Posted 18 October 2012 Posted 18 October 2012 What's the point in San Marino's presence in any World Cup qualifying group? 1 win in their entire history. With all due respect, why are they there? I bet it attracts a few tourists who wouldn't have heard of the place otherwise... Should have a pre-qualifying tournament for the weakest teams: e.g. have the bottom 2 in each of the European qualifying groups (World Cup or Euros) play off against one another before the real qualifying tournament starts. So, maybe 16 teams (inc. San Marino, Scotland etc) in 4 groups of 4 (or with play-offs, depending on numbers). Would give real momentum to those who qualified for the qualifying round proper.... Mind you, are Montenegro now going to be England's main challengers for World Cup qualification? A few mountains off to the west of Belgrade...?

ozleicester Posted 18 October 2012 Posted 18 October 2012 What's the point in San Marino's presence in any World Cup qualifying group? 1 win in their entire history. With all due respect, why are they there? It is the WORLD cup after all... and much like the FA cup and the opportunity for any club/country to win it, for me it just adds to the magic of it. If we didnt have teams such as them...we would end up with something like the rugby world cup ..or the Davis Cup which really are just the elites and somewhat uninspiring. I would also love to see some games between San Marino, the Faroes...and some of the Oceania teams - Tonga etc... now that would be exciting for all
Daggers Posted 18 October 2012 Posted 18 October 2012 What's the point in paying full price for a book from a book shop? I've just got five books for £14 off Amazon which would have set me back over £100 from somewhere like Waterstones. Go me.

I've just got five books for £14 off Amazon which would have set me back over £100 from somewhere like Waterstones. Go me. It's frustrating, I'm the same. I like to buy my books/music/dvd's/records from local shops and places like Rockaboom in town to support local businesses but it's impossible when you see what they have to charge compared to Amazon.
Alf Bentley Posted 18 October 2012 Posted 18 October 2012 It's frustrating, I'm the same. I like to buy my books/music/dvd's/records from local shops and places like Rockaboom in town to support local businesses but it's impossible when you see what they have to charge compared to Amazon. You can get some good deals at Rockaboom, to be fair - plenty of CDs for £5 or much less. Admittedly, new releases are more, but still often £10, which is less than most independents and a lot of corporate chains (though maybe not Amazon). When I've been in Rockaboom recently, though, they seem to have less stock than they used to...I hope it's not in trouble as I think something significant would be lost if it was. Maybe I'm just a nostalgic, I've always been used to going to independent record shops, partly as you can browse and end up buying something completely unexpected that you see or hear there....not often the case with Amazon, I think, where most people buy exactly what they went on-line for, or maybe something associated with something they already know. I was also reading that Amazon is yet another of these highly-profitably mega-corporations (like Facebook) that are paying next to no UK corporation tax, by basing all their corporate entities in low-tax countries....Rockaboom where possible, Amazon where necessary!
Guest MattP Posted 18 October 2012 Posted 18 October 2012 I'm going in there tomorrow so I'll have a look round, not been in since "buy a record day" earlier this year and people were queuing round the door. Hope it's not in trouble either, would be a reat shame to lose that from St Martins.

There definitely seems to be less first-hand stock at Rockaboom - though possibly more second-hand. From the odd chat with the bloke who runs it, I've always got the impression that he was quite shrewd (contrary to the impression given by his grungy look), so hopefully he is just making sure he doesn't have too much cash tied up in stock at a time of lower sales and is selling more second-hand stuff as he knows people have less money at the moment... Really hope it's something like that.

Really hope it's something like that. I was talking to Carl (owner of rockaboom) the other day about how little stock he had as i usualy spend about £60 in there at least twice a month. he said that nobody is spending any money at the momment. He said that all of the shops in St Martins are struggling at the present. And he's not able to afford to keep the stock high untill he gets more sales.. catch 22 really. havent seen his assistant Andy in there for a long while either. plus I said his second hand stuff is stupidly over priced. Surely a £5 in the hand is better than a £10 on the shelf. he said he'd think about it. But he will also order anything you wish and I think his prices are sometimes better than Amazon you just have to know what your after..

Zingari Posted 22 October 2012 Posted 22 October 2012 You've made me want some walking poles now . If anyone looked threatening coming towards me , I could raise them up and run towards them pretending to be Sir Lancelot

Zingari Posted 22 October 2012 Posted 22 October 2012 You'd probably get tasered and then jailed for wasting police time I saw a policeman trying to explain to a lady driver how to reverse her car into a space the other day. Ought I to have made a citizens arrest on both of them for wasting police time ?

Not sure about arresting the pleb though, you'd probably get life for disrespect on that level
