indierich06 Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 I'm still surprised you still persist with the scoring argument. "Hammering" opposition can also have a detrimental effect on the psyche - leading to "illusions of grandeur", as a wise man once articulated. If I remember correctly, England lined up a few friendlies before Euro 88 to boost confidence. They smashed Aylesbury about 7-0. How did they get on in the tournament? They lost every single game.
ashfosse Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 The only friendly that should matter to us as fans is Monaco, even then, the result makes no real difference to us or the team. It would be nice to beat this season's big spenders though big spending Monaco vs big spending Leicester City or do you reckon we've shaken that off yet?

I'm talking generally of course.Have you ever played pre season footy mate and had a really good one? You know where you've introduced a couple of new lads into the frame and you're knocking it about and scoring for fun. That's the psychology I mean. I know, personally, a few good pre season wins used to get my confidence up and make me really want the season to start. Last night didn't sound like that did it. It sounded like a really drab affair. That's all I mean.

That's the psychology I mean. I know, personally, a few good pre season wins used to get my confidence up and make me really want the season to start. I know what you're saying, it must feel good to bag a few, but I'm sure the lads won't be overly concerned if they don't. I've played a bit in my time - I was a keeper - but not much. It's a buzz when you keep a clean sheet in a friendly, but then you still think 'well, that's great, but a proper side will give me a much harder test'. I think the key is to not go overboard one way or the other. If you score a few - great, but don't get too cocky. If you don't, well never mind, it's only a practice game and none of the lads are going full pelt anyway. For me, friendlies are nothing like competitive games, there's nothing like the same buzz or desire to win as in competitive matches - that's why I'm never overly concerned by the results. But I can see where you're coming from to an extent.
MC Prussian Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 big spending Monaco vs big spending Leicester City or do you reckon we've shaken that off yet? Definitely, but I doubt you'll hear a lot of media outlets banging on about QPR's or Wigan's spending sprees...

foxaholic Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 No, you completely refuse to understand, completely. Some of us are under no illusion that we won't be firing on all cylinders yet. Fine, no problem. I wasn't expecting us to be. However, this is not the same as being unable to even look like scoring against York. The two are different so I said as much. I also said that goals breed goals. It is so difficult simply to differentiate between the two points being made or are you frankly, so rigid in your thinking that you just can't do it? IndieRich has done it in the same thread. Boys, calm down... No-one is attacking your (our?) precious Leicester. We have dared to suggest however, that it might have been nice to have scored a couple of goals against a side who play at a much lower level than we do. So that we get used to scoring again? Is that ok with you lads? Tell you what, you tell us what we can all say eh? lolA full strength Villa side lost 2-0 at Luton a conference side with no comment anywhere
