Haydos Posted 22 August 2013 Posted 22 August 2013 I'll get straight to the point. If we assume that Anelka walking out of WBA this afternoon and saying he's retiring is true, then what do people think of players honouring contracts they have signed? I would think most people are going to agree that if they sign them then that's their fvcking problem and they should honour them until the end. So in that case, Anelka retires weeks after signing for WBA, near the end of the transfer window. This leaves WBA short and with little time to find a replacement and a seemingly retired striker. Why should they be left in this position? It might be due to 'personal reasons' but should they have the right to sue him? It's very hypothetical but factors like these can be worth tens of millions of pounds at the end of the day.
Captain... Posted 22 August 2013 Posted 22 August 2013 It works both ways, clubs often don't honour the contract either and sell players or pay them off their contracts. I don't know the details but for a player to retire a couple of weeks after signing is pretty poor.
Dan Posted 22 August 2013 Posted 22 August 2013 It works both ways, clubs often don't honour the contract either and sell players or pay them off their contracts. But yeah I don't know the details but for Anelka to walk out like that is pretty poor. More in it than him 'just walking out' apparently.
Guest MattP Posted 22 August 2013 Posted 22 August 2013 First off no sympathy for anyone who signs a player like Anelka, deserve what's coming to you. Dan is right, they mean nothing. Would love to see a really famous player demand a move and be forced to spend 3-4 in the development squad but FIFA have even put rules in to stop that now.
Captain... Posted 22 August 2013 Posted 22 August 2013 More in it than him 'just walking out' apparently. Just saw the bbc headline, my original response was mainly based on the op.
Guesty Posted 22 August 2013 Posted 22 August 2013 No-one is quite sure if he's walked out. He has according to some people, but then others are saying his best friend has just died and he's on compassionate leave. If it is because of a death and he's decided to just move on it's sort of understandable he's always been unpredictable. Plus I'd always be wary of a player who went to China to play; as I doubt it was for footballing reasons. Since Mourinho isn't playing Lukaku it wouldn't surprise me if he sent him back to his mate Steve Clarke and WBA anyway.
Fox92 Posted 22 August 2013 Posted 22 August 2013 Contracts don't mean that much anyway. We always hear 'xxx signs a new contract which will keep him at the club untill 2017'. But it's not true.
Libertine Dream Posted 22 August 2013 Posted 22 August 2013 Its been reported as compassionate leave by the beeb. But contracts mean fvck all nowadays, Bale signed a new one a year ago, one more good season later and its reported that he's said he won't play for Spurs again, Suarez did similar
Haydos Posted 22 August 2013 Author Posted 22 August 2013 Contracts don't mean that much anyway. We always hear 'xxx signs a new contract which will keep him at the club untill 2017'. But it's not true. That's the point of the thread. I think it's weird that contracts mean nothing. If you sign a contract you should have to see it out if nobody buys you. Players just sign as long a contract as they can and then get pissy 2 years down the line when they want to leave for a bigger club and they have 3 years left.
Samilktray Posted 22 August 2013 Posted 22 August 2013 Anelkas bad attitude is a bit of a myth nowadays. Has he even acted up in any way in recent times
Bert Posted 22 August 2013 Posted 22 August 2013 Contracts only mean something until the player doesn't want it to.
Haydos Posted 23 August 2013 Author Posted 23 August 2013 Contracts only mean something until the player doesn't want it to. I get all this. I'm asking why, trying to instigate discussion. I wasn't looking for soundbytes and cliches about 'football these days'.
Captain... Posted 23 August 2013 Posted 23 August 2013 If you compare it to the real world though, work contracts don't really mean shit, I can walk out of any job at any time, I just have to give a months notice, not even that in some cases, I quit they stop paying me. I guess the difference is that clubs pay a lot of money to get a player to sign a contract, but I believe they are able to sue for compensation if a player doesn't fulfil his contract for whatever reason, such as Mutu, didn't he get sued after having his contract torn up for drugs offences?
