At last the dinosaurs at the FA get it !

The issue is this. Homegrown players come with an inflated price tag. The PL may be the richest league in the world but how do we justify these prices? Liverpool a few seasons ago bought Suarez for £35 million and in the same window bought in Andy Carroll for £50 million. Find me one person that would play Carroll over Suarez on skill? In fact id rather have Ronaldo over bale as well. Now that FFP has come in aswell clubs will struggle to buy the better English talent. And if they can't move they may be stuck in the lower leagues with a team tht struggle for promotion. They then can't gain the experience of world class competition and the national team still suffers. The best bet is for every club to focus on their academies and the coaching but even the top academies are swamped with foreign talent. 2022 is far too unrealistic. We've gone too far and I fear we won't see any improvements until nearer 2030

Point of order Carroll was 35 million, and even then he wasn't he was Torres less 15million.

The point is still valid. I do wonder if there is a mentality thing, how many English players have coped well with big money high pressure moves, especially at a young age, you could say Rooney and Ferdinand, and obviously Shearer did.

But look at the likes of Milner £18 mill, Lescott, £22 mill, SWP £21 mill, Glenn Johnson 18 mill, Ashley Young 17 million all under performed.

He was my bad. I think part of the problem is England has always been the under dog that's why we love them so much. We only perform when we are written off. When we are favourites or have that pressure and expectation we flop.. Badly. Proof? look at any of the major tournaments in the last 20 years. The only pheasable way of this working is if somehow we manage to deflate the price of our young stars so clubs are likely to take the risk on them but If every club NEEDS homegrown players this isn't going to work

I heard a lot of talk in the speech about targets, foreigners and 10 year plans.

I heard nothing about how any of this this might be realistically achieved.

Tax laws and cost of living mean that championship players are often earning more than players in the top flight of other countries.

Levels of taxation and cost of living is no higher in this country than most European countries.

My point is still valid, if English players have priced themselves out of PL market where have they gone to, they're not abroad or improving our lower divisions. Aplayer isn't going to quit completely because someone won't pay him 10k a week.

It's money.

Clubs hoover up bucketloads of young English players for their academies for fear their rivals will benefit from the talent. My lad's very good U12 team was decimated by them being picked off for Watford, Brentford, Chelsea, QPR and I doubt any of them will make it. We know one lad who played for Chelsea up the age of 20 - sub a couple of times, on loan at Cardiff, (sort of made it then) Ireland U18 international - but nowhere near a place in the Abramovich squad. They have so many kids they don't know what to do with them, they're just parking them on the off chance one of them will miraculously turn into a star because there's so much money in it if they do and if not, well at least that club down the road haven't t got them and turned them into something great. And it's even ruining park football let alone - the rest of the professional game. Many years ago there was a proposal that Liverpool turn Crewe into a nursery club and there was outrage - but it's happened in effect - by stealth. If you look at the number of Premier loan players in the Championship - our clubs aren't far short of being just that for the top six or so.

Its nonsense.

England's first choice 11 all play against the best players in the World, week in and week out, in the Premiership.

This should make them better players than if they were only playing against other British players.

The problem is not the amount of foreigners in the PL. Using positive discrimination to increase the number of Englishmen in the League will just dilute the overall quality.

Lets be honest, they won't introduce one of these quotas because they'll be scared that it'll jeopardise the Premier League 'brand', or make it less 'entertaining' or some other short-term nonsense.

The fact is 'English Players' just are not up to the quality of foreign players.

Hence we import foreign talents.

Who was the last young English player to replicate the form of Juan Mata for example, ,20 goals and 20 assists in one season in all competitions?

Foreign players can adapt to our game much better than english players abroad simply by the way they are brought up. They continue to play 5/6/7 a side for a longer period of time allowing players to focus on their individual technical skills with the ball, rather than worry about formations etc..which our kids have to do once they hit 11 a side at a ridiculously young age.

In our game we are too focused on ensuring players are well rounded and can defend, whereas we should be allowing them to show off their natural flair/ability, allowing the more attacking players to focus on solely on forward play.

There is no set model to follow, some will say to follow spain, but it is not sustainable. They are going through a golden age at the minute, mainly due to the help of barcelona, but it will eventually die down allowing another nation to take center stage.

I said it in the ''ambitious much'' post in the general sport forum

having more English players will........................just mean there are more English players.

There would be more to pick from but unless they are in that top 1% category, they arent going to make a difference to the national side.

There are already 1%ers playing in the premiership, week in, week out against top quality players from overseas.

We need to be investigating HOW we can produce players of a technical ability great enough to move our national team forward, and WHAT we can learn from countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, Brazil and Argentina which have kept them at football's top table for so long, so that we can produce a crop of QUALITY English players at the world level to rival these nations
