Rincewind Posted 23 November 2013 Posted 23 November 2013 If anyone has a property that has lain empty for six Months or more Action homeless run a scheme where they renovate the property qnd even take over the management and finding tenants. There is no worry about rent as the guarantee that too. Details can be found on the Action Homeless website or Google empty homes Action Homeless. This is genuine. They also offer a catering service. They did the buffet at the recent AGM. These are two examples how they raise money for the charity.
Strokes Posted 23 November 2013 Posted 23 November 2013 My daughters play house is lain empty over the winter months and could do with a lick of paint. On serious note though I can't help, though it sounds like a nice scheme.
Rincewind Posted 23 November 2013 Author Posted 23 November 2013 Thanks for the positive reply. It was too late to post the link last night, I'll look later. This gives more details. There are also pictures of the renovation work being done. http://actionhomeless.org.uk/empty-property-leicester/
Zingari Posted 23 November 2013 Posted 23 November 2013 i saw a programme a few weeks back about a scheme where people could buy empty houses for a token fee if they promised to renovate them and live in them for a few years . ( i think it was in Middlesbrough but not too sure) It seemed a great idea to me

Finnegan Posted 28 November 2013 Posted 28 November 2013 There's a team that sit in the next office from me and they basically do this sort of stuff. Pretty sure they can aggressively take action against owners of long term vacants that are dropping in to disrepair, too. Basically say, oi you, we're taking your house, doing it up and leasing it out for you for three years. I don't understand the specifics, I've not spoken to them much. But, basically, we already do this.
Ric Flair Posted 28 November 2013 Posted 28 November 2013 I'd be more than happy for them to steam in to my flat back in Hinckley, ransack the gaff, burn it down and relieve me from the burden around my neck of negative equity. Have the fooker and lob any cretin in there, i'm not arsed.
Rincewind Posted 28 November 2013 Author Posted 28 November 2013 These do not force home owners to hand over property though. They bring the property up to living standard done by a team of volunteers then take over the management. The owner is guaranteed to receive the rent.

Ric Flair Posted 28 November 2013 Posted 28 November 2013 Would it not be better to have it renovated and receive rent from it? I do receive rent from it, it's a new build from 2005 so it doesn't need renovating. Sadly I bought before the crash and new builds are always priced up anyway so effectively i've been hit twice in terms of real value. I haven't lived in the property for 5 years since I split up with my ex and I live in London. I'm finding it hard to move on with that round my neck, to make matters worse it's on one of those 75% 25% schemes where I have to take on the remaining 25% of the property value after 10 years, which is due in 2015. The property is actually worth less than the 75% mortgage I have on it so taking on the other 25% is brainless even though by law i'll have to. Might just fook it off in the bushes.

Feel for you, that's a pretty precarious situation to be in. Would be a hard choice to bag it off but it actually might be wise in the long run!
johnny the fox Posted 28 November 2013 Posted 28 November 2013 costs money to leave homes empty these days..after a month you have to pay council tax even if your not getting any services. which I think is wrong.

Would be a hard choice to bag it off but it actually might be wise in the long run! I would ride it out for now, house prices are moving up and we could be in for a mini boom. It's damage limtations with that really though.

So a team work for free to bring a below par house or flat upto standard and the owner who does nothing gets money for it? I can imagine how you would feel about that if the Tories had came up with the idea.
pSinatra Posted 28 November 2013 Posted 28 November 2013 There's a well known house on Narborough Rd Sth (next to the Braunstone WMC) that's been empty & dilapidated for as long as I can remember. I think it's owned by a guy who lives in Canada. There was talk several years ago about compulsory purchase, or at least ordering the owner to do something about it. That was a long time ago & it's still the shithole it always has been. I'm sure the neighbour's wouldn't be very happy about it & it probably brings down the value of their house. It seems the council (Blaby District) have little power to enforce anything? I don't suspect it's their fault & has more to do with legal technicalities & the expense involved.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 28 November 2013 Posted 28 November 2013 A large new restaurant with three storeys of office space was built in Wycombe five years ago. It never opened and none of the complex ever used. There are no to let signs to be seen anywhere. Pretty appalling to see such things, when there is so much homelessness around us.
Rincewind Posted 28 November 2013 Author Posted 28 November 2013 I don't know where the law stands when properties have been abandonned. Whether rent or mortgage is being paid does not make much difference to me. As well as a waste of a possible usable property they can be eyesores.
