cjslcfc Posted 3 January 2014 Posted 3 January 2014 I think signing no-one would be a mistake. One or two extra bodies in the squad to cover and I think we are well on our way. Think back to the last couple of teams to win this league. I know it doesn't mean there's a rule of "do this and you win the league" but Reading bought Jason Roberts and Cardiff bought Frazier Campbell, both of which contributed massively to their second half of the season with key goals. Kevin Phillips could be that man for us and would love to have him as an option. He's not bothered about regular starts but just wants to move closer to home (in the midlands), is a clinical poacher who is renowned for important goals, has yet more experience of promotion to add to our squad and is just a good professional. Anyway, I trust Nige to get it right as he doesn't often let us down too much with his signings. He knows who he wants and the type of characters he wants and I'm sure he will have done his homework alongside Walsh and Shakespeare. Oh and I would also get a back-up winger as mentioned by almost everyone here.
XLM Posted 3 January 2014 Posted 3 January 2014 The biggest signatures our club can make this January are made by our own players, committing themselves to us for the future.
LCCFox96 Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 I think the OP makes a very fair and valid argument and could use evidence of previous promotion achieving sides to support his case. I.e. Cardiff added sparingly in January - making only the excellent addition of Frazier Campbell, the same could be said of Southampton and reading the year before. However I think we should add one or two (max) players this window. Lacing the squad with those final bits of quality and strength in depth should see us over the line. Whilst the good young squad is playing well and leading the pace ATM they are not immune from injuries or bad form and our ranks, while containing classy players, do not stretch beyond the 18 regulars - bar maybe young Tom Hopper. 1 or 2 additions is the answer here. ThAt small a number of players could possibly upset the squad and would push in the right direction. I think NP will add wisely and only where necessary this month. FFP will also dictate max fee = about 800k
sdb Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 We absolutely need a winger - today showed that. Without one of Knocky (who isn't really a winger anyway) or Dyer, we're completely fooked. If one - or heaven forbid both - get injured then we are in trouble. Striker? We have plenty - we just need to get Wood et al firing, rather than look to spend all the time.
Buzzell Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 A couple of wingers would do nicely. Like a few have said on here, if Knocky or Dyer gets injured or suspended then we could be in trouble.
Leicester_Numan Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 I'm starting to think that the debt being cleared is going to people's heads.Nothing to do with clearing the debt and no-one is suggesting we spend millions, although we could choose not to abide by FFP if we wish as we're in a very good position. Most people are thinking we only need a couple of signings and as we've effectively got rid of Whitbread and Danns, we can probably bring a couple in. As Phillips is a free, he's not likely to break the bank is he?
Les-TA-Jon Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 I'd be concerned about our ambitions if we didn't sign at least 1 player this window. I completely agree with NP's approach - not to collect players, sign them for the sake of it and to not fuel the media/speculation. But, I think we've got to look at the current context of things. Last year we did ok, and we're getting better and under Pearson. And obviously at the minute we're top and winning a ton of games. But last season's second half has given me a lot of doubts as to our ability to see it out. Sure we've seemingly sorted out a lot of those problems from last season, namely the lack of a plan B, mental fortitude, closing out games, grinding out results etc. We've got more pace and desire and we've clearly got a point to prove. But one major problem last season was that our squad had no strength in depth. This season that's somewhat been dealt with, the squad is far more balanced as NP is constantly telling us, but I think we could be undone in two areas. Wingers and Up front. What the hell will we do when/if Dyer and Knocky are injured/suspended/off-form? - Derby are doing well, have brought in Dawkins and Bamford and might get more if they do a Zaha-like loan deal+transfer. - Wigan are improving and have money to spend - Burnley are dangerous, and have been up there all season - QPR might actually click and walk the league, like they should be doing - Forest will spend and are always capable of a surge - Bolton, Blackburn, Reading all have good teams - Watford have the new manager, plus more loans coming in - Charlton and Leeds under new ownership and money to spend? We couldn't ask to be in a better position, being top with a 4 point gap after half the season. BUT... We've been in the championship (or lower) for, what? 12 years or something? Basically, we're (until this year) a bang average championship side. After all the money spent since the Thai's came in and so long languishing outside of the PL do we really want to risk losing out on what is our best chance of promotion in so long? £2-5 million spent now could get us over the line and make us £££££.

Harry - LCFC Posted 6 January 2014 Posted 6 January 2014 Don't think we need anyone else now. Be nice to have one or two more but with cover on the wings I don't feel we really have to bring anyone else in. Looking out our first eleven there's nowhere on the pitch I would consider weak. It's a very balanced squad indeed.
