MC Prussian Posted 3 February 2014 Posted 3 February 2014 Five-times Australian Olympic medal winner Ian Thorpe has been discovered in Sydney behaving in "erratic ways". Thorpe allegedly tried to break into what he believed to be a friend's car. The rightful owner alarmed the police who then transferred the swim star to the Bankstown Hospital. It is believed that Thorpe's mental state has been deteriorating in recent weeks and months, due to a combined use of painkillers and anti-depressants. http://news.sky.com/story/1205564/ian-thorpe-taken-to-rehab-for-depression
Itsthejoeker Posted 3 February 2014 Posted 3 February 2014 Coming from the Swimming world, this deeply saddens me. Such an incredible athlete, and incredible role model. I believe constant allegations of him taking performance enhancing drugs, and abuse about his sexuality has led him astray. Wish him all the best, and sincerely hope this does not end up with suidcide or a drug overdose.
Nalis Posted 3 February 2014 Posted 3 February 2014 On the Olympics coverage, he didn't see to be 'all there' so no great surprise. Sad all the same.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 3 February 2014 Posted 3 February 2014 I'm a fan of the Thorpedo. Hope he gets better soon.
Jon the Hat Posted 3 February 2014 Posted 3 February 2014 Wish him all the best. Great athlete and always seemed a decent guy.
ozleicester Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 What a douche, what a waste, drugs, and so selfish. oops sorry this was supposed to be in the Phillip Hoffman thread, Why does this guy get love and hope... and PMH gets abuse?

Not been in that thread but in Thorpes defence his not killed himself......yet!
ozleicester Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 Not been in that thread but in Thorpes defence his not killed himself......yet! Yes, feel for the guy, been in the spotlight since he was 14 and in a sport that is incredibly tough on young people. Also been the subject of media speculation about every part of his life for far too long. Hope he gets the help he needs.
Jimothy Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 What a douche, what a waste, drugs, and so selfish. oops sorry this was supposed to be in the Phillip Hoffman thread, Why does this guy get love and hope... and PMH gets abuse? I suppose there's still hope for Thorpe, that's why he gets it. Also it's well documented how hard it can be on young sportsmen and women leaving the only world they know behind with so much life in front of them. PSH had potentially years of a very successful acting career ahead. He also would have been extremely wealthy and in a position where he could easily remove himself from temptation without suffering too much hardship, yet he didn't. Thorpe can't escape the emptiness not swimming competitively brings, PSH could have escaped his addiction.

I guess this is where my frustration at the inequality of the responses.in the PSH thread get me. He didnt commit suicide... He had been clean for 10 years...he clearly had some issues that meant he could not escape his addiction. A (what appears to be)mostly good man, lost out to his human flaws/weaknessses/personality traits, and is disrespected and abused by some people. ( i know its just a football forum and who really cares what a couple of irrelevant people say).. but id just like to understand what makes those people tick. edit This is a great read by the way http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2013/mar/09/russell-brand-life-without-drugs?CMP=soc_567
