Jace Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 I have recently started my own as a little hobby to do in my spare time when I am not working in my full time job, I have used digital mixing programs like virtual DJ etc for about 14 years so with all these new style digital DJ controllers that are now available on the market I thought i would give it a go. does anyone here do this too?

Yeah I'd love to just do family and friends events as a hobby too, with those though I refuse to take money for it unfortunately I have large amount equipment I still need to pay off!

Want to be able to accommodate all music types so would be able to do any type of event, most of the general social clubs and pubs around here are not very specialist so all mobile djs tend to play a mix of everything. Bar mitzvahs I wouldn't think would be very likely here though as we are nowhere near as multicultural here in Cornwall than Leicester is so wouldn't be any demand for it. ElusiveEd Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 I was in the dance music biz for 11 years or so and you really can't go wrong with Pioneer stuff if you want to be serious about it. Having said that, a great all rounder and something I absolutely love tinkering with is Traktor DJ stuff. The software links up with your tracks in itunes, is incredibly portable and miles away from when we used to lug vinyl and CD's to clubs. Traktor recently brought out their latest hardware, Traktor S4 Mk 2 which is awesome, but means the S4 Mk1 is pretty cheap to pick up now and, to be honest, probably more than enough for a "Non pro" Dj to use. The S2 is probably enough too but with the S4 you can line up many more effects and tracks too. They look the part too. Pioneer have similar (Software) and utilise summin called Rekord Box and there is always Ableton Live which I find great but a lot more complex and useful if you really want to "create" as you play. With Traktor, you don't actually need the mixer (Now known as controllers) as you can play straight from your laptop but can be pretty fiddly so, if you want to look the part too, then having the Traktor S2 or S4 controller in front of you really looks the part and really does have some amazing features. Hope this helps a little. I started this project in Feb and the DJ controller was the 1st thing I bought, I ended up with a Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 which comes with Serato intro. At 1st I thought it was amazing and looked really cool but now already I feel quite limited by it, I think the Traktor S4 might be what I look to upgrade to. I want it to be all digital on my laptop bought a Macbook Pro 8gb which has been quite decent so far good speed never froze or stalled on mix yet and good for battery life too

ElusiveEd Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 You will see all the top jocks with Macbooks as there is nothing else (In many minds) that can compare with them when it comes to using the digital sotware, less viruses, hiccups and the likes you get with regular Windows PC's. I have just checked my itunes files and have 59.3gb of tracks from the years gone by and am only 3/4 of the way thro loading my old vinyl and CD stuff onto it. With Windows I would no doubt encounter many problems with such a high amount of music when it came to playing (although that amount, as nice as it is to have in one place, is far and away what would be considered 'Needed") but have never had a problem with an Apple Mackbook and we all swear by them. As for Numark Mixtrack pro? Mmm! I hear ya. VERY Limited. Have you had any problems with it conflicting with other music related software on your Macbook as I seem to rem there being issues with it and it is a VERY basic thing and and more for bedroom DJ's rather than playing gigs and partys. You would be well advised to turn to Traktor, you will not regret it, for the £ it has some serious features and NI are taken seriously in the field. Loads of other hardware you can add on too as you get more experienced. My 2 best mates, who are premier global club DJ's are sponsored by Pioneer so obviously get equipment sent, but even so, they both speak highly of Traktor and NI and, there is a BRILLIANT tuition vidoe series on YouTube by (If I rem right) Benny Benassi for NI.
Jace Posted 27 April 2014 Author Posted 27 April 2014 I've not had any software problems with the Mixtrack Pro 2 as I've only used Serato with it anyway which works fine, the main limitations that I'm finding at the moment is having 2 channels without an input, the loops don't cut down to below 1 beat which seems rather basic to me, the fxs are rather basic but to be honest I'm not a big fan or user fxs anyway and the whole feel of it is very cheap and plastic. Id like to have a mixer that has a decent flight case manufactured for it too because Im quite tall (6'2) a standard dj table sits quite low for me so a decent flight case that I could use to raise its height up a bit would be ideal. I do like the look of the mix track pro 2 though and will have to stick with it for a bit whilst I repay for the equipment I've already bought, looks good in white with some of the other equipment I have, if your mates ever end up with any extra stuff they don't want let me know
