Sampson Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Cult hero. Can you imagine Bruno in this current side this season instead of Konchesky? We'd have beat Reading's 106 point if that were the case IMO.
gcah2013 Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Cult hero. Can you imagine Bruno in this current side this season instead of Konchesky? We'd have beat Reading's 106 point if that were the case IMO. Konchesky is quicker, smarter defensively, and offers more going forward than Bruno ever did. I fail to see how Bruno would have helped add more points to this team. If you had mentioned Schlupp, on the other hand, you would have a very solid point.
Sampson Posted 27 April 2014 Posted 27 April 2014 Konchesky is definitely not quicker or smarter defensively than Berner. I think you're forgetting just how good Berner was in 09-10. We were never the same team whenever he was out and the points difference in games he played in and games he missed was ridiculous. Never would've made the play-offs without him.
gcah2013 Posted 28 April 2014 Posted 28 April 2014 Sat in L-Block for the 09/10 season, I got a very good view of Berner for 45 minutes every half. He was solid. But it was only by virtue of having Ryan McGivern as our second choice LB that made him look better - the guy only ever looked comfortable for us playing as a central defender. You're probably also getting confused by Berner looking fast in a defence of Solano, Hobbs and Brown. And I can't take you seriously if you think Berner was smarter than Konchesky defensively. The gulf in class is obvious. Berner stood out from an over-performing Championship team that finished 6th. Konchesky has been over-shadowed by many other players in a team that has romped the league with 99+ points. Don't let this clould your judgement.
Sampson Posted 28 April 2014 Posted 28 April 2014 Meh. For the past 2 seasons from Konchesky I've seen him getting skinned by attackers and constantly giving the ball away. Konchesky hasn't been overshadowed in this side finishing 1st by a mile, he was also overshadowed in a side which struggled to finish 6th last season and looked average in the side that finished 9th the season before. Berner stood out because he was our best player in a side which actually finished comfortably 5th in the Championship, had nothing to do with his replacements. I never said Berner was fast, but he was still faster than Konchesky. Neither are particularly quick though. Not sure what his ability at playing centre-back has to do with thinking he is a better left-back than Konchesky?
