New Signings

Beckford and Mills didn't impress me when we first signed them - I'm talking a Ferdinand, Barry, Milner - a big name that would show we mean business

These aren't realistic, Barry is highly thought of at the fifth best team in the league, Milner a big part of the champions. They are not going to join Leicester.

You gotta build for the future, signing players like them doesn't really add anything for the long term goal, oh and don't forget these players would be wanting big time wages.. Let QPR do that shit, they don't seem to wanna learn so let them fvck it all up again

Barry or Milner I'd happily have, but Man City have been playing Milner and I'm sure Barry could still command game time at a far bigger club.

Both not realistic IMO.

In Nige we trust there's still lots of time for signings. Anyway him n Walsh snr probably have some little gem lined up that no one has ever heard of. Knocky n Riyad had we ever heard of them before? I don't think you did.

Ffs these threads are so boring, transfer window not open yet, judge the team's readiness for the premiership after we have assembled the team and actually played some matches. Trust Pearson and Walsh with their excellent record blah blah blah

Has nobody learnt from last year's preseason, "how to embarrass yourself on a football forum" competition? Or is this now an annual event?

If so I think the OP has just taken the lead from ASS by seemingly seriously suggesting we sign Rio Ferdinand. Text book twattery that could see a new champion crowned!

All Valid points lads - no i hadnt heard of Knocky or Riyaz but when your a new team in the Premier League it would be very naive to buy unknown players who aren't proven at this level as ultimately they're a gamble and in this league you can't afford to take risks.

Bonus points for brazen contradictions, this is a challenger indeed!

True and you do need that bit of experience around the place but i would rather do what Southampton/Swansea did than what QPR might/probably will do....

Ok but if you buy so called "proven" players at this level they can still flop and we probably see that every season somewhere. My point is any signing can be a risk no matter who they are.

Oh dear you really a fool aren't you. - how have i embarrassed myself I said the team will survive - but to push on need a couple of key signings. So unless you've anything constructive to say do one - and stop your swarmy comments your showing yourself up

Um - we haven't bought anybody yet.  Except Mahrez in January, who looks a pretty good bargain at this stage, eh?  But we did get some great impact from players like Vardy, Drinkwater, Moore, etc last year, who all were nurtured in our system and have flourished here.  Same for Schmeichel, De Laet, James, etc.  I for think think they should definitely look to continue what has been successful.  Why try to emulate QPR with their spectacular record of financial failure and poor results by bringing in loads of big names?  It was laughable the way they struggled for promotion last year with their wages and experience.

These lame threads where people pick on Upson are getting really old.  He started all 46 games last year for Brighton, who fielded a pretty decent defensive unit.  He has loads of PL experience.  All great teams in all sports feature a mix of youth and experience.

Every signing so far this summer has significant upside.  Albrighton is an upgrade in set piece and cross delivery.  We will need that.  We obviously needed a top quality cover for Kaspar, and there he is in Hamer.  We lost Phillips at a minimum, and we look to be bringing in Fraizer Campbell.  That's an upgrade.

Its also obvious the team is looking for a target man.  They will settle on one before long.  Then they will need a fullback, maybe a midfielder, and things will be looking pretty decent in my book.

Big name? What's the minimum letters required for it to be big?

Firstly I'd like to place on record that with the current squad of players we have - I do firmly believe we will survive next season. However i'm slightly concerned with the lack of transfer activity so far. I know you'll say well the World Cup is on and current season has only just finished but not too long till pre-season starts.

The caliber of players we have signed so far in my opinin won't improve our team - they'll simply compensate for what we lost i.e Albrighton for Dyer, Upson for St Ledger, Hamer will be a sub. The players linked i.e Campbell I'm sorry but they're not better than what we have. When you get promoted you need to improve it's as simple as that.

I see this evening that Rio Ferdinand will sign for QPR tomorrow - that's the sort of signing I would of loved down here to help the youngsters not bloody Upson.

Opinions lads - do you agree with me or do you have an alternative view.

Thanks

Always look at the business of other clubs; bar Chelsea there's been next to no significant movement in the Prem - certinaly nothing to worry that we're falling behind in our business, unless you think Villa giving Joe Cole two years and signing that bag of toss Senderos are laying a marker down.

People need to remember that we've already picked up three (looking more than likely that'll rise to four) senior players to replace outgoings and it's not even July. Don't panic.

Not sure where you've been since Sven left but there is not a chance in hell that we'll be signing any big name 'marquee' signings.

Those days are long gone. What we have in place now is a well drilled scouting network and transfer strategy that not only sees us getting value for money, but also attracts players for the right reasons (hunger, passion, drive, ambition) and not the kid in a sweetshop approach that Harry Redknapp takes.

QPR only just gained promotion and if they didnt, they would have been another Portsmouth and for whatever reason, they just havent learnt their lesson. Signing Ferdinand is an awful move and is not the kind of signing that will help any young central defender develop. The only thing Rio will pass down to anyone is how to 'merc' someone.

Lescott wouldnt have been a bad shout but again, his wages alone could alienate the team and the strength of spirit we have is far more valuable in the long term than making a star signing just for face value.

You mentioned that the signings made so far wont improve the team and I have to disagree. Albrighton is clearly Premiership quality and Upson has played the majority of his career at the highest level.

Try and learn the lessons of the past. On opening day last season, we'd only signed Bakayogo and pretty much everyone had us pinned for mid-table.

Now more than ever, we all have to keep the faith.

Great post - some very valid points. In terms of Albrighton - if he was that good Villa wouldn't have let him leave on a free (just saying) and Upson if he was Premiership quality he would have been playing in the premiership not Championship.

Our whole squad was playing in the Championship.  Now they are playing in the Premiership.  I guess, by this logic, that means our whole squad is now Premiership quality.

Thank you for teaching me your ninja skills in logical argument.  I can now claim to be a master.

Our squad isn't premiership quality yet is it - "my logic" don't try and put words in my mouth. Our squad in time can be premiership quality - but only time will tell. "Ninja Skills" how old are you!

Ah yes. The old "Your parents joke" Well done. A comedy wit as well and you claim my attempt was shocking.

Rio Ferdinand ? Hahahahahaha

You don't have enough posts to start threads on here which offer a fair opinion in which you've seen both sides of the coin. So of course you're going to get posts on here from this new generation who try to be funny.
