Number of players

Last season we used 23 players in the league.

Manchester City were the only team to use 23 players in the Premier League last season. Every other club used more - an average of 28, up to Fulham's 39 and Cardiff's 32.

Obviously some of these will be due to January ins and outs.

If we reasonably say the following players will get match playing time in the Premier League as it stands, have we got nearly enough players?

By my reckoning we have 21 players who currently fall into this bracket (20 if Schmeichel stays fit and in form all season):

Schmeichel, Hamer

De Laet, Wasilewski, Moore, Morgan, Upson, Konchesky, Schlupp

James, Drinkwater, King, Hammond

Knockaert, Mahrez, Albrighton

Vardy, Ulloa, Nugent, Wood, Taylor-Fletcher

For the Premier League ideally, I'll be looking at 25/26 players possibly.

 

You need depth in central defence & central midfield, and that could mean 5 players in each of those positions. 

 

Have to take into account, if we do sign anymore players, Hammond & Wood may leave.

I'd like us to sign a defensive midfielder to play with James and Drinkwater (please be Leroy Fer) and a centre back with a bit of pace.

I don't think we've got anywhere near enough players, but in essence we'll be playing less games so if we are extremely lucky again this season with injuries then our lack of numbers might not be exposed. That being said, we aren't going to win as many games this season so the pressure to change the starting eleven will be higher and we just don't have much quality outside of our starting eleven.

 

If Pearson isn't aware of this then i'm shocked. If September 1st passes and we've not bought in at least 2 players then i'll be disturbed.

Looking at that I believe for the 25 man squad Moore doesn't count this season? (might be wrong)

 

So there is space for 4 or 5 more players. 

 

With Upson being injured, I'd like to see another Left sided CB maybe one that can play LB/CB

 

A centre Mid and forward that can play centre or wide.

A few ins and hopefully not too many outs in January. Worst comes to the worst we have to use a few the kids for a few games if injuries stack up. Can't see us using more than 27 players over the entirety of the season.
