Speed camera detection

I can recommend the Road Angel. I used to be a rep, and had a clean license for many years and then ended up with 2 x 3 points in 6 months. Once on an empty M6 at 2 in the morning by a Cop car taking my average, they were reasonable, they could have put me up in court the next day but gave me a telling off, 3 points and £60 fine. A tip for you here, do not creep past them at 70, and then boot it when you are out of sight. Once they knew I was not going to be an idiot about it we had a good chat about who they pull for what reasons etc. They did then follow me from Birmingham all the way to the M69 at 69 mph at 2 in the morning, that was painful !

and the other on an empty A road in the wilds of Derbyshire by a camera van. Both my fault was caught banged to rights. So did some research and bought a Road Angel to help me avoid getting any more. Not cheap but it worked. Mostly this was achieved by me not speeding, but used the Road Angel to make double sure I did not make a mistake in a part of the UK I did not know. As a rep I did not want to get to 9 points. It only really worked by telling you where the sites are via it's GPS and told you where there might be a camera site so you could make sure you were under the limit.I never relied on the onboard lazer detector as previous posters have said if you get targeted by a laser then it is too late. Not brave enough to rely on it detecting laser spray.

The GPS speed shown was always 10% lower than the car speedo, so in the average 50 limits I used to set my cruise control to 53 on the Road Angel which was 57 on the speedo. Don't know why, as that saved me a couple of minutes over a 10 mile set of roadworks. Not really worth the effort.

You blatantly work for road angel eh

So if I set my cruise control to 55 I'll be ok? But 57and I'll get points?

Is it also true it's based on time from one camera to the next? So if I am stuck in traffic at one, then get freed up I can go 70 until I pass the next camera where I should slow to 55 again. Am I wrong in thinking this?

It's average speed between cameras yes. The camera locations are at a fixed distance so it's basic maths for the distance divided by the time between the two number plate reads for your speed. I'm not sure if it is consecutive cameras or any cameras though.

It used to be the case that switching lanes would mean the camera did not register your number plate but that is no longer the case anymore.

For anyone in Leicestershire though you will have to get used to average speed on the M1 though because when they have finished in Northampton they will be bringing the 'managed motorway' system to Leicestershire's stretch of M1 so that will be a few years of roadworks and average speed limits!!!!!

Not condoning speeding but sometimes it can be difficult if driving on unfamiliar roads to know what the limit is, I was on what I thought was a 40mph road in Manchester doing 37, turns out the limit was 30 and I had to do the speed awareness course. Not saying a detector would have prevented me from doing the course, it wouldn't, but it's easy to sit there and say "Don't speed" when it can easily happen unintentionally.

On a single carriageway road with street lights and no speed limit signs, the limit is 30mph, so you don't actually need to have additional "repeater" speed limit signs once you have entered the 30mph zone by passing the intitial sign.

If you're unsure you can check by looking into a side street and if there is a speed limit sign, usuall 20 or 30mph, at the entry to that road then the road you're on is more than 30 and will have repeater signs designating the limit for that road.

Incidentally, I recently found out that the average speed cameras on certain stretches of road can take your average speed between ANY 2 cameras.
