AyewJoking Posted 29 October 2014 Posted 29 October 2014 Aren't they illegal? No, the cops can do whatever they want. Oh..............
yorkie1999 Posted 29 October 2014 Posted 29 October 2014 I don't think detectors are illegal in this country, they are in France. But what you want is a lazer elite jammer which is sold as a "parking sensor"

This might annoy the police though and they might pull you over and try and do you for something else.
fuchsntf Posted 29 October 2014 Posted 29 October 2014 I never detect anything, too busy driving fast,....whoops another flash, I have no idea why the papparazi like my photos. These bloody councils keep taking photos of me, and then ask me for money, I keep telling them I dont want them and I'm getting fed up being asked to pay for their advertising campagne, when they keep asking people if they have seen me.
Tielemans63 Posted 29 October 2014 Posted 29 October 2014 Has anyone got one of those devices in their cars that can detect mobile speed vans from around the corner at a fair distance? Are they reliable? Can anyone recommend a make or model? Have you got a Sat Nav mate? Mine does this as one of it's functions. Gives a bleep when I'm about 200 yards away from a camera. PS - Helpful tip from me - if you're ever driving in Northants then none of the fixed cameras are switched on in the county and haven't been for months.....but you didn't hear if from me

Rincewind Posted 29 October 2014 Posted 29 October 2014 Don't speed then you won't have to worry about being caught, being fined or causing an accident.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 30 October 2014 Posted 30 October 2014 Not condoning speeding but sometimes it can be difficult if driving on unfamiliar roads to know what the limit is, I was on what I thought was a 40mph road in Manchester doing 37, turns out the limit was 30 and I had to do the speed awareness course. Not saying a detector would have prevented me from doing the course, it wouldn't, but it's easy to sit there and say "Don't speed" when it can easily happen unintentionally.
Collymore Posted 30 October 2014 Author Posted 30 October 2014 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Inforad-K2-Camera-Warning-System/dp/B003JBJFPS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414616677&sr=8-1&keywords=mobile+speed+camera+detector This doesn't detect the mobile cameras, only the locations where they possibly could be. Thanks anyway.

It's the detectors that actually pick up the scatter from the radar/laser guns from the mobile vans or the sniddy police man in the hedge. They fire the radar or laser at your car and time how long it takes for it to bounce off you and return to their equipment. Unfortunately for them, some of the waves go past your car, over the hill, off the trees and are detectable far up the road with a sensitive receiver alerting you to the danger. It's this type I'm after. After researching, some seem a lot more reliable than others. I was hoping a FTalker could vouch for one. All of the above is completely legal and some police actually encourage you to have this equipment. It's the jammers that interfere with their equipment that they don't like.
AndWhat? Posted 30 October 2014 Posted 30 October 2014 Been caught speeding twice and both times was about 2am on an empty motorway with temporary speed limits. Bastards.
ADK Posted 30 October 2014 Posted 30 October 2014 I wouldn't rely on a detector. Better not to speed or just accept the risk.
Collymore Posted 30 October 2014 Author Posted 30 October 2014 Have racked up the miles, (50,000+ per annum), for years and years now. Used to work for a courier firm and regularly did 3,000m every week.....Invested in a 'Road Angel' which was an amazing little device. In all the time I had it I only once fell foul of the law...Down near Strasbourg where I got 'nicked' by a roadside unit who doled out 'on the spot' fines. They were experimenting with new detectors at the time ! Thanks. I've seen these in Halfords. They're nearly £200 and you have to buy a subscription too. The reviews are mixed so I'll do some more research.
Leeds Fox Posted 30 October 2014 Posted 30 October 2014 I wouldn't rely on a detector. Better not to speed or just accept the risk. If he's just going to accept the risk, surely he'd want to accept a reduced risk? Also, I think the reason could be that he might not know he's speeding, so a detector would allow him to slow down to 30, regardless of the limit, should he be unsure of it.
Webbo Posted 30 October 2014 Posted 30 October 2014 Most Sat navs know where the cameras are and warn you.
AoWW Posted 31 October 2014 Posted 31 October 2014 Most Sat navs know where the cameras are and warn you. *tut* Did you actually read Collymore's posts or have you been taking lessons from Rincewind in 'state the bleedin' obvious'?!
Rincewind Posted 31 October 2014 Posted 31 October 2014 *tut* Did you actually read Collymore's posts or have you been taking lessons from Rincewind in 'state the bleedin' obvious'?! Sometimes it just has to be done.

It'll be nowhere near fool proof though, and cost money. A sat nav will tell you the speed limit and any fixed cameras. Anyone should really be aware of the speed limit anyway.
Collymore Posted 4 May 2015 Author Posted 4 May 2015 Has anyone got one of those devices in their cars that can detect mobile speed vans from around the corner at a fair distance? Are they reliable? Can anyone recommend a make or model? Well I've had my detector in my car now for 6 months with nothing but false alarms to report. BUT THEN TODAY! I was driving in the countryside, literally in the middle of no where. It started screaming "LAZER" at me and low and behold at the end of the lane there was two old boys with a speed gun and an Ipad recording! I wasn't speeding anyway but it was a 30mph zone that you could have easily missed. I wonder if these guys actually have any authority anyway? I bet they just pass on their evidence to the police who probably just write educative letters.... At least I know it works though!
Guest Posted 4 May 2015 Posted 4 May 2015 You know speed limits are there for a reason. And obeyong the speed limit has been proven to save lives.
