Speed camera detection

Recommended Posts

Well I've had my detector in my car now for 6 months with nothing but false alarms to report.

BUT THEN TODAY!

I was driving in the countryside, literally in the middle of no where. It started screaming "LAZER" at me and low and behold at the end of the lane there was two old boys with a speed gun and an Ipad recording!

I wasn't speeding anyway but it was a 30mph zone that you could have easily missed.

I wonder if these guys actually have any authority anyway? I bet they just pass on their evidence to the police who probably just write educative letters.... At least I know it works though!

Very nice, care to share any recommendations?

I can read all the usual stuff about how speed cameras are there to save lives but when the M1 is reduced to average speed checks of 50mph between j19 and j15 I'm the middle of the night on an empty road and there is NOBODY working there at the time, it completely and utterly takes the piss.

Yep.

I considered posting a picture of a deadly road accident here but perhaps that is below moral decency standards.

Maybe you'll change your mind after you kill the 2 year old toddler.

The op's asking for recommendations for speed camera detectors, not the moral implications of speeding.

And with that in mind it's about time some bright spark came up with a mobile phone detector.

I bought this one.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fuzion-Detection-System-discontinued-manufacturer/dp/B000G5S46G/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1430752338&sr=8-17&keywords=speed+camera+detector

Don't be put off by some of the reviews, some people expect it to detect mounted cameras. It's not designed for that, just camera vans and hand held lazer/radar guns, If you read the top review it is spot on.

The annoying thing is it can go off quite a few times in supermarket car parks and at traffic lights. I normally turn the volume right down and then back up on the motorway and countryside.

Forgot to add - It won't detect the ANPR cameras on the motorway. it's a gamble to know if they're on or not.

The problem with a laser detector is that by the time it's 'shouting' laser, it means the beam is on you and your speed is being measured.

I used to drive through Maryland a lot and there is a straight stretch of road that was always being monitored by lasers. There were never any warning alarms just one when they were aiming at me. Unlike radar where the beam gets scattered, the laser is pin point accurate and only gets activated when the cop pulls the trigger while pointing at you

The only defense as I understand it and that is a laser jammer and/or a 'veil' coating on the front of the car. The 'veil' reduces the the distance that your speed can be recorded and gives you time to slow down. I have no experience of these items so I can't say how good they are.

Yes you're right. It's the first time I've ever seen a lazer gun, my nemesis are those radar vans, still not had the pleasure of testing it with one.

The thing was I wasn't speeding and the blokes were a long way off in some bushes. I'd had never have spotted them without it.

It was just nice to know they were there and I could double check my speed all the way down towards them.

Also I'm pretty sure the jammers are illegal in this country and they come down on you like a tonne of bricks if you're caught with one.

They will just be people from the community unofficially recording it so that they can gather evidence to campaign for either installation of a speed camera or a police presence for enforcement.

Busybodies with fùck all better to do.

Partially agree with this but on that long a stretch there are no realistic alternatives - it would be good if there were variable speed limits but guess the cost of putting that in temporarily would make it prohibitive. daft as it sounds, is it anything to do with the concrete barriers and safety around colliding with them at higher speed?

Not that one were the woman was in the middle of the road, taking her last breath, and there was a body with no head, and another bloke half alive, was posted on here a while bk, gave me ****ing nightmares for weeks after!! Awful

Average speed zones. Talk to me

I'm sat at 50mph bang on cruise control yet people are zooming by me and disappear long into the distance.

What is the purpose of these zones in roadworks and are laws enforced? Me doing 50mph is seemingly the slowest you're allowed to go at

You can do 55 and you need to take your speed off your sat nav, rather than your speedo. Realistically you're probably about 10mph too slow.

Britain led the way by bringing in a points system for road offences. It has been such a spectacular success in reducing death and injury that a lot of the rest of the world has followed.

So if I set my cruise control to 55 I'll be ok? But 57and I'll get points?

Is it also true it's based on time from one camera to the next? So if I am stuck in traffic at one, then get freed up I can go 70 until I pass the next camera where I should slow to 55 again. Am I wrong in thinking this?

I'm not sure on the measuring distance but you can do 55mph, also your speedo will say you are travelling faster than you are.......so you can do about 58-60 and get away with it. Satnavs or phones are more accurate way of measuring your speed.

I can recommend the Road Angel. I used to be a rep, and had a clean license for many years and then ended up with 2 x 3 points in 6 months. Once on an empty M6 at 2 in the morning by a Cop car taking my average, they were reasonable, they could have put me up in court the next day but gave me a telling off, 3 points and £60 fine. A tip for you here, do not creep past them at 70, and then boot it when you are out of sight. Once they knew I was not going to be an idiot about it we had a good chat about who they pull for what reasons etc. They did then follow me from Birmingham all the way to the M69 at 69 mph at 2 in the morning, that was painful !

and the other on an empty A road in the wilds of Derbyshire by a camera van. Both my fault was caught banged to rights. So did some research and bought a Road Angel to help me avoid getting any more. Not cheap but it worked. Mostly this was achieved by me not speeding, but used the Road Angel to make double sure I did not make a mistake in a part of the UK I did not know. As a rep I did not want to get to 9 points. It only really worked by telling you where the sites are via it's GPS and told you where there might be a camera site so you could make sure you were under the limit.I never relied on the onboard lazer detector as previous posters have said if you get targeted by a laser then it is too late. Not brave enough to rely on it detecting laser spray.

The GPS speed shown was always 10% lower than the car speedo, so in the average 50 limits I used to set my cruise control to 53 on the Road Angel which was 57 on the speedo. Don't know why,  as that saved me a couple of minutes over a 10 mile set of roadworks. Not really worth the effort.
