The hospital has been beset by parking problems for years, with visitors facing queues of up to an hour. A petition demanding a multi-storey car park was signed by 10,000 people 10 years ago. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust said the car park for 610 cars would open in December 2015. Half of the 300 spaces at LRI's Havelock Street car park will be lost when the multi-storey is built, leaving a total of about 760 spaces, the trust said. 'Pandemonium' Estates director Andrew Chatten said the multi-storey, which is currently under design, would connect the Havelock Street car park to Aylestone Road. "There are two objectives: one to provide better access for the public and the second is to reduce congestion in surrounding roads and reduce impact on local residents," he said. Health campaigner Zuffar Haq, who submitted the 10,000-signature petition in 2004, said it was "absolute madness" the trust had not dealt with parking problems sooner. "This can't go on," he said. Ivan Deacon, who works at a private car park next to the hospital, said drivers were "clashing" with one another. "It's pandemonium - it's a free-for-all. They're arguing, they're clashing." Mr Chatten said he would work with the city council in the period before the multi-storey is built to reduce congestion on surrounding roads.
kingcarr21 Posted 14 November 2014 Posted 14 November 2014 Brilliant. Been desperate for one for years. I went hospital on wednesday and parked in one of the private car parks. £3.00 for the hour and got straight in. I was lucky. Theres always a massive queue for the main hospital car park and on wednesday when i joined the queue i saw a bloke arguing with a BMW driver. I assume the BMW tried to cut into the queue which happens all the time. Lets hope the multi storey will be big enough for the massive flow of cars.
DennisNedry Posted 14 November 2014 Posted 14 November 2014 Very surprised about this, I thought it was council policy to discourage cars as much as possible in and around the city?
SystonFox Posted 14 November 2014 Posted 14 November 2014 Good news. Hopefully with the new ED department being built it Will much improve the LRI. Very surprised about this, I thought it was council policy to discourage cars as much as possible in and around the city? Yes but the LRI is the cities largest hospital and there isn't enough parking. What else do you suggest?
Jon the Hat Posted 14 November 2014 Posted 14 November 2014 It was shit when I lived nearby 15 years ago. Well overdue I am sure.
Rob1742 Posted 14 November 2014 Posted 14 November 2014 Went around that area a couple of weeks ago. It's embarresing how bad it is. You can get parked at Central London hotels, but not this. Crazy
Bellend Sebastian Posted 15 November 2014 Posted 15 November 2014 Very surprised about this, I thought it was council policy to discourage cars as much as possible in and around the city? I think what they're trying to discourage is quite as many cars coming into the city between 8.30 and 9.00 and all the same cars leaving simultaneously at 5pm. The High Cross would have struggled to get planning permission if the Council was that anti car

davieG Posted 15 November 2014 Author Posted 15 November 2014 It's a good idea and I support it, just surprised the council are actually doing it. The council aren't doing it the lri are but I guess it'll need planning permission from the council
davieG Posted 9 April 2015 Author Posted 9 April 2015 Work to build multi-storey car park at Leicester Royal Infirmary set to begin By Merc_Reporter | Posted: April 09, 2015 By Cathy Buss Artist's impression of new car park, subject to planning approval Artist's impression of new car park, subject to planning approval Previous Next Previous Next Comments (0)Preliminary work to build a multi-storey car park at Leicester Royal Infirmary gets underway on Monday (April 13). Construction of the six-storey building still has to get the go-ahead from members of Leicester City Council's planning and development control committee. Once completed it will provide just over 400 spaces. It is understood there will be around a further 150 spaces in the current Havelock Street car park - giving a little over 550 spaces. However, managers at Leicester's hospitals are warning of disruption for patients and visitors until the end of the year as 100 existing parking spaces are lost. A spokesman said: "During the building works there will be a loss of approximately 100 spaces in the Havelock Street car park. "We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time. "I hope our patients understand this is for the long-awaited benefit of increased parking on the infirmary site." Work on the new car park marks a battle over more than 10 years and a 10,000 signature petition calling on hospital bosses to improve parking provision at the infirmary. A date has not yet been set for the city council planners to discuss the scheme. However, once planning permission is granted the main construction work will begin and it is expected to take between seven and eight months to complete. It is hoped that it will be fully operational by the end of the year. The ground floor will be given over to 21 bays for disabled parking. Five further floors will provide an additional 380 spaces. From Monday the main walkway - known as Gate 1 - which leads from Aylestone Road past the Osborne building will be closed to the public during construction. Alternative access further up the road - at Gate 2 - will be marked for pedestrians. This will allow steel hoarding to put up around the site and for the delivery of construction site offices. The new car park is to built on existing land in front of the Sandringham building between the existing Gates 1 and 2. A spokesman for the Leicester Mercury Patients' Panel, said: "It is fantastic news that finally, after more than a decade of promises this has finally arrived. "It has been a painful experience for patients, visitors and staff."
