A professional footballer was arrested after he told a police officer he should get a proper job and then offered to buy him a BMW, a court heard.

Lee Tomlin, who plays for Peterborough United and was a youth player at Leicester City, also told the officer he looked like a tramp, Leicester magistrates heard.

Prosecutor Fernando Rodrigues said Tomlin (22) was told by police to leave the city centre and not return within 24 hours after officers were called to a disturbance at just after midnight in Belvoir Street, Leicester city centre, on June 12.

He said the police were trying to deal with a large group of men and trying to prevent an incident.

He said: "Tomlin said he was a professional footballer.

"He told an officer he looked like a tramp and he should get a proper job. Tomlin smelled of intoxicants."

Tomlin, of Farm Close, off Saffron Lane, Leicester, was given a direction order and told he had 15 minutes to leave the city centre and should not return within 24 hours.

Mr Rodrigues said: "He continued to shout at the officer, called him a tramp and offered to buy him a BMW."

About half-an-hour later, Tomlin was seen to get out of a taxi in Belgrave Gate and trying to get into a nightclub.

Tomlin was arrested for breach of a dispersal order.

He pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a direction given by a police officer.

Father-of-two Tomlin, who was not represented yesterday, appeared in court in jeans and a T-shirt.

Chairwoman of the bench Anne Egglestone said to Tomlin: "Had you had too much to drink?"

Tomlin said: "Yes. Next time I will look after myself a bit better."

Mrs Egglestone fined Tomlin £190 with £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Asked how he could pay, Tomlin said: "I will pay the whole total today."

Peterborough United were promoted last season and will play against Leicester City in the Championship next season.

sounds like an arrogant dickhead to me. tw*t

Oh come off it!

Have you never taken the piss out of somebody after having a couple to drink? Seems like a mountain out of a molehill being made here.

Who knows, the police officer might have been acting like an arrogant dickhead himself (plenty of them do) and got a little bit back and couldn't take it back.

I'd say that's almost certain.
