  1. An immeasurable tragedy. Led to the slow decline of European civilization.
  2. We were very good for like two and a half months but I disagree with people who said at the time or say now that it was even better football than 15/16. We stylishly brushed aside a few pretty crap teams, but even in the Everton and Norwich home games in that run we didn't look amazing imo. But yes, that autumn was fun. A lot of wasted potential.
  3. Bit dubious of the claim that we industrialised first solely because other countries had their resources plundered though I haven't read much about that period. Also I wouldn't be so sure that it will never happen. UK is a pretty weak country but also one that seems very invested in the idea of soft power and doing the right thing, so I can see some kind of transfer happening at some point in the future.
  4. Britain was almost bankrupt after WW2.
  5. That loot doesn't exist anymore. Modern wealth isn't based on slavery and empire.
  6. I think it's the other way round - even if we could pay it we shouldn't.
  7. It was a pretty short run to be honest and we didn't play anyone that good. When you look at the 19/20 season results on wiki there's a lot of red there, it doesn't look that impressive. Maybe it made us think we were better than we really were.
  8. I think Nottm Forest, for a club that has hardly been in the PL in recent years, are actually very well liked and respected round the world. Especially in Europe. Lots of people in Bulgaria for example know them from the two European Cup winning teams and the fact that CSKA Sofia ended their run. I hate them but I'm not going to diminish the fact they have a very impressive history and fan base.
  9. Surreal night. Always so great to score two goals in quick succession and the third goal was one of my favourites of recent years. You can see me on the highlights start to run down the steps and then realise it's too slippery with trainers on.

  11. The UK in some areas is starting to resemble a failed state, so I'm not sure there's much we can and should be doing to help developing nations. The reparations stuff is quite funny because it wasn't that long ago that people were arguing we needed to leave the EU to "reinvigorate the commonwealth" and now those same people are gobsmacked that the commonwealth is trying to fleece us for as much as they can.
  12. Much higher murder rates than European cities for a start. A lot uglier and impersonal too, from what I've seen, although admittedly that's only from second hand experience.

  14. Disagree tbh. I think the idea is ingrained in England that there is a system keeping us all down and that politicians play divide and conquer to maintain it. But in reality millions of people have voted consistently for NIMBY, low growth, antisocial policies mostly for quite selfish reasons. You can't expect that isn't going to create friction between those who voted for it and those who generally didn't.
  15. And I should add I don't think people my age are blameless at all.
  16. True. I shouldn't generalise. Britain's made a lot of mistakes over the last forty or so years I guess it's inevitable your generation will get blamed for a lot of it.
  17. I understand the dislike towards Boomers. One of the luckiest generations in history, they totally squandered what had been gifted them by voting for Thatcherism, Austerity and Brexit, and now Britain is probably one of the worst places to be young in Europe. Of course, not all boomers wanted those things and even the ones that did are not fundamentally bad people. But I am sure as shit not going to be grateful to a generation that left the country in a far worse state than they found it and then spent the last decade or so flailing around blaming everyone but themselves. And to be honest, looking at young people today, I realise that people of my generation, born in the 80s, probably have more in common culturally with boomers than with teenagers in present day Britain.
  18. American nationalists now talk about the UK like Brexiters used to talk about the EU - impoverished, quasi-totalitarian, and full of violent foreign criminals.
  19. A bit of distance between the UK and US for a few years is probably a positive thing for us overall.
  20. More like Water loo looking at it. Think he'd had a few too many Madris.
