We didn't know then what we know now. Clearly the climate is changing. Do we really need to be "advised" on the risks and actions when mostly it's basic common sense. I think we rely more on being told what to do by government and pressure groups, than actually knowing what to do from advice and common sense handed down over generations. That kind of boils down to many families these days not bothering or being lazy in their parenting.

1976 begs to differ. We had severe, prolonged snow in 1963. The storm of 1987 which Michael Fish famously discounted. There's been a number of severe weather events over time which we never had Met Office warnings for. I'm not saying it's wrong, but there's always been severe weather at times, albeit now it's more frequent and widespread but back then we just got on with stuff without being nannied because common sense prevailed.
