Tbh I originally had a smidge of sympathy for the psr stuff as the rules changed at a time we had set up a wage structure to be competitive. But after relegation we had a chance to change course and yet, we got promoted and doubled down. So there’s no ifs or buts about it, no mitigating factors. Not really. Owning a Football club isn’t about making money so very few are set up to try and make money. In not that everyone running them is incompetent, it’s that they all push the envelope to hope for sporting success. If it’s money you want you don’t purchase a football club

I think you would be right in what you’re saying if we were a prem club or just in a good spot financially. But we couldn’t afford to keep him unless he was fully committed to the cause. Because keeping him would have meant no incomings as well as putting us in a worse financial spot. As soon as we learnt he wasn’t happy to stay the best thing we could do was get him out for as much as possible. If they were the only club to come to the table, that he’d be willing to join, then simply they had all the power. I don’t think we can be too harsh on the club on this one, as we were actively trying to sell him but other clubs wouldn’t come in at the price we wanted. So we ended up having to take what we could. It’s easy to say it’s a bad deal, but if nobody is paying more what can you do? If this had been done a week earlier… yes give the club hell. But it was a last minute deal and whether or not we could have got them higher is something only they know the answer to. With the wide scout networks, if you push a club who value your player at 20m to pay 25, more often than not, they just move to a player on their list that they do value at 25m

When was the last time you saw a price drive up because more clubs enter the race? It just doesn’t tend to happen any more. The whys around that I’m not so sure

The problem is that football is dictated by agents now and it’s not the old school of bidding wars driving up prices. what happens now, is agents decide the value and all the clubs meet the same value. So when we’re in league 1 you’ll get all those clubs (who I don’t disagree would probably pay that fee) interested for a fee like 17m and none of them will really budge on it and eventually we will just be bullied to accept it

Can’t do a lot if a player is refusing to play though. We were forced into a losing position and given our financial situation had to do something. we got James in out of it, who was always going to be a better fit for this league. Player power is insane these days

One big issue is, the coventry and stoke games might be dead games as they aren’t playing for anything else. Coventry might happily roll over if the league is wrapped up, just to spite us
