FIFA have outfitted their (Adidas) ball with the sensor, which relays any touch (even the lightest graze) 500 times a second. Far superior to the PL's system, which will rely on a subjective VAR and the slower, blurry VAR cameras to judge which video frame represents the moment the ball was played. Apparently Nike are not interested in putting the sensor in their ball, and Nike pays enough ₤₤₤ to the Premier League to dictate the terms. So the best, most objective technology has not been taken up.

It's supposed to include audio clips, right? So you'll need a little bandwidth, not a ton. (like those of us in first world countries take for granted. I was just at an MLB game texting pictures back and forth with a buddy who's in France) It was announced as "near live". I'm skeptical whether that will mean in real time ... or carefully edited a few minutes after the fact.

VAR: The Premier League and PGMOL are unveiling a plan to reduce delays, add in-stadium announcements, raise the threshold for intervention, create more transparency, and provide more stringent VAR training. Supporters inside stadiums will now be shown all ‘goals’ that get disallowed on the venue’s big screen(s), as well as a definitive clip if there has been a delay because a goal has been checked for a possible foul or offside. There is also a new PL Match Centre social media account that will communicate the facts regarding VAR decisions. PGMOL have recruited 12 new specialist VARs. VARs at Stockley Park have been told not to get involved in subjective calls, instead only intervening when there is a ‘clear and obvious error’. A new term will also be heard: “referee’s call”. It will be used to make it clear the on-pitch decision is critical in the process, and that this should stand unless there is, yes, a clear and obvious error. If a referee gets sent to the pitch-side monitor, the replays they are shown on it will be played at normal speed. Only when a point of contact is being established will the frames be slowed down. Automated offside: Semi-automated offside technology is coming, although the technology is still being tested. The PL expects it “from after one of the autumn international breaks”, so it could be as far away as November. This will be a purely optical system and will not use the in-ball chip like FIFA. Handball: The PL has advised players that not every touch of a hand or arm on the ball is an offence and that they are not expected to move with their arms into an unnatural position behind their backs to try to avoid such contact. It will not be handball if the player is deemed to be in a justifiable position or making a justifiable action; if there is a clear change of trajectory when the ball is touched by, or deflects off, the same player; or if the ball hits the supporting arm when a player falls to the ground. IMO, a mixed bag. The VAR changes are constructive, though probably too late to save the patient. Unfortunately, there appears to be no further guidance on “interfering with play” offside calls. And handball decisions will become even more subjective, and probably remain a shitshow. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5702607/2024/08/16/premier-league-changes-2024-25-var-handball-offsides/

"The panic mob is getting too big to control" "You're right Jon. We must resort to violence" "You can't possibly mean ...?" "I'm afraid I do. Sign Jordan Ayew"

Take this repulsive design monstrosity … splash a semi-fraudulent Asian betting front across the chest … and put “ WARD 1 “ on the back. There you have it. The perfect storm. A product that will induce vomiting 10x faster than a whole jug of ipecac syrup. I hope the club donate any and all stock to the Leics paramedics who may respond to poisoning calls. Especially the ones meant for game use by Danny.

Having overspent, and continuing to overspend, Chelsea are rummaging at the bottom of the American-franchise-owner bag of tricks. Offering long contracts to players you can't afford in the first place is a common NFL tactic. Can't re-sign your star quarterback and pay a decent squad and stay under the salary cap? Sign the QB for a stupid number of years, pay him what you can for the next year or two, then inflate his wages in the outyears, commonly known as "dead years". (Chelsea must be trying to spread Palmer's transfer fee over more years to reduce the hit this year and next.) Doesn't this screw you when you finally get to the "dead years" and the piper needs paid? Of course. But by then the NFL salary cap will be much higher, loosening the straitjacket. And you can often re-negotiate a salary downward if the player is desperate to stay in the league. Of course, if you're a clueless football club owner (signing a neophyte manager and telling him to figure out how to use 50 random players may be a sign of this) and keep missing ECL revenues ... your revenues and FFP cap will drop, not rise. And footballers are mostly quite determined to collect their wages in semi-retirement. OOPS. Might this plan have a flaw?

You and I must be comfortable floating in the rubbish, because here we are reading this thread. The only posts needed to understand how/why this deal collapsed are these two. The rest is noise. NEXT

gone after a mere nine months .... Buonanotte, sweet prince -
You tune into the gold medal match and expect something like a Euros final -- but quickly realize it's mostly a U23s tournament, just with higher stakes. Fun to watch, but half the players barely have a clue yet. Horror show from both keepers ... but the French GK is only 19.

Spanish keeper goes the wrong way on France's first shot and lets it go right through his arms. Is his name Daniél Wardez ?

The even surer bet is Guillem Balague scolding the fans and press after they finally win one in September. -
Turns out we’re bidding 30 mill for Matta Sülüçü. Tore it up in the Turkish second division last year.
