This bit really pees me off. I understand it completely. But why not get your kid a cheap £5 phone for texting and ringing and leave the smartphone at home. Wouldn't want my kids lugging around 100s of quid worth of phone anyways, if they are owt like their dad it'll end up smashed/lost within a week.

I mean that's not exactly what's happened is it? And nothing stopping the UK government outsourcing it to them in any event.
-
All I know is it will undoubtedly come with a bunch of privacy invading horseshit via some garbage 3rd party like anthropic in the name of "saving the kids".

Eh. Defense spending isn't just for us, it's for nato and we should be capable of doing our fair share. The idea that we'll just nuke whoever steps foot in somewhere like Poland for example is at a minimum, bananas.
-
Spending more in preparing the country for future conflicts absolutely. Personally, I'd rather we had the capacity but never any need to actually use it.

The UK’s working-age benefits bill was lower than for defence in the mid-1980s, but since 1990 welfare spending has been higher - often significantly so. Working-age benefit spend is projected to rise to around 4.3% of GDP by the end of the decade, compared with the government’s , external"ambition" to hit 3% on defence in the next parliament. Start here imo.

It really is. Genuinely can't remember when all the talk of car washes, Turkish barbers and dodgy cornershops started among people, but it sure as hell wasn't recently. Been happening for years, just a shame it takes the BBC to pull their finger out to highlight it, when most common folk knew it already. Still, time will tell whether it actually gets dealt with or not. From what I can see it's had £30mill thrown at it, hardly enough to make a dent up and down the country I imagine.

Hey now. We still make cool stuffs! -
Hard to not wonder what the publics and this forums reaction would be to this if the roles were reversed tbh. Hard to believe it wouldn't have had anything to do with race then.

Southampton owner Dragan Solak says he will not sack Tonda Eckert, despite the "mistake" the head coach made when authorising a spying campaign against rival Championship clubs. "I think he deserves a second chance and I would give it to him," the Serb businessman told BBC Sport in an exclusive interview. "My full support would be behind him actually, because I think he's a super-talented manager." -------- Wow. Even the people with the tiniest bit of sympathy for them getting booted from the playoffs will struggle to maintain that now.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/major-new-swedish-fighter-jet-deal-to-strengthen-ukraine-and-boost-british-jobs https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y8wjvd1ypo Don't mind investing in defense, IF we build it ourselves. Or at least some of it, like with the fighter jets. We have good engineers in this country. Let's get em working, and even more importantly, teaching. I know the profession was essentially decimated by sending production overseas, but it's nice to see a bit of home grown stuffs making a comeback. If the jobs are here, people will learn how to do it.

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell has admitted embezzling more than £400,000 from the party between August 2010 and October 2022 ----- Got to give it to this guy, takes some skill to steal 400 grand and keep it from the missus for so long. I can't put 20 bob in skybet without my partner in crime after me.

Possibly. I'd suggest most businesses would prefer 2 people on 40 hours than 3 on 60 hours though. Better productivity that way. Do think the policy could help sectors where skilled people are lacking though.
-
Don't see why it would be, I get paid 1.5x over 37hrs and 2x on sundays, I'd imagine my employer would be quite pleased if I had an extra incentive to work more hours that didn't cost them a penny, especially since the talent pool in engineering is fairly limited.
-
Good fight stopped early. Shame.
-
Or, in the real world where "should" doesn't quite cut it, I'd love to work more hours without getting taxed on it so my kids can grow up with their mum at home instead of us both having to work.

Income tax on overtime above a 40-hour week should be scrapped for workers earning less than £75,000, Reform UK has said. The party estimates what it is calling a "hard work bonus" would save a full time nurse working six hours of overtime each week more than £1,300 a year. Reform said the policy would cost £5bn a year and could be paid for through its plans to make cuts to welfare payments. But Labour, the Tories and the Lib Dems all questioned whether Reform would find the money for the plans. Reform leader Nigel Farage said the overtime proposals would "finally make work pay, drive up productivity and restore the appeal of a strong work culture once again". ----------- Like this policy.

Companies from across England, Wales and Scotland set to receive contracts worth up to £4 million for quantum sensing and autonomous systems to secure communications, space manufacturing and synthetic training. ------ It sounds mostly not so boom boom tbh. Should still find plenty of buyers for the things they're working on though. Not quite sure how they are gonna tackle space manufacturing with £4mill, but they can have at it.
