Need to gas James up before the match and tell him we need someone with his quality and determination in the final third as we keep melting when we cross the halfway line currently. Possibly just change Begovic for Jakub. Then hopefully Lascelles can marshall Nelson and the rest of the defence so the reverse, i.e. the defence melting when the opposition enter our final third, isn't also true.

That's a terrifying prospect given how bad we defend (look at Southampton once we added Lascelles), especially under the prior managers who couldn't organise a defence to save their lives. Rowett could potentially make it work if we had more time, but... I'm pretty certain attack is our only form of defence currently.

Given the state of the club, it may now be 50/50 that he fizzles out and ends up a Championship journeyman, but I beg to differ that he doesn't have the potential and all the attributes required to become a top player if the club wasn't in such shambles.

It bothers me that Rowett has a touch of the Rodgers about him when it comes to subs. Waits until 60+ minutes regardless when it has been clear that Ayew has offered nothing and even got in the way more than anything today.

Well... that's horrific.

He's looked a lot more secure on the ball and in distribution than Okoli and has looked solid in a few games under dire circumstances to be blooding a young CB. Has shown all of the attributes at different times, just struggling to combine them all with too many brainfarts at the minute, but hopefully we scrape survival this season and he comes into his own next season after this invaluable experience.

Like I said in the match thread - I'd rather a youngster make a mistake as part of his learning curve than the calamity bros, Faes, Okoli, etc we've had making routine errors supposedly at the height of their careers like the last few seasons. There is still a potential England cap in this kid should the club trajectory allow it.
