But if you’re ‘compensating’ for an increased tax bill - that’s actually creating more earnings for that person, so they’d have to compensate an amount in excess of the original tax liability. Zaha is reportedly on anything between £4 million - £7 million a year; so if we say the additional tax liability is around 25% you’re potentially looking at an extra £1-2 million per year to cover it However - what’s not completely clear is how many years of earnings a change of Zaha’s residency back to the UK might effect - it could effect his previous and future earnings.

I’m not sure he’d pay UK tax on past earnings - that would be down to his residency status and I imagine for the most part of the previous tax year he’d qualify as an overseas citizen (worked abroad, fewer than 91 days spent in the UK). But - the Turkish tax rate for sportsmen/women is a fixed 20% I believe. Over here, the UK higher tax rate of 45% would apply to Zaha’s earnings, so quite a difference. However, I think the added complication in this comes from the fact the football season straddles a tax year (tax years start/end on the 6th/5th April each year). I believe what could happen if he made the move is that he’d end up being classed as a UK resident not only for the current tax year, but for the one immediately after it too - i.e. the loan deal could have impacted on his net earnings long after his loan with us. Obviously it’s complicated tax stuff and so for this to come up as an issue probably suggests we were quite far down the road with things - it’s the sort of thing that would come up when your solicitor / accountant goes over a contract! Edit: If he’s paying himself via a company - I have no idea how that would work taxation wise. It probably means he receives ‘dividends’ from the company which has a slopping tax rate of up to 39.35% in the UK - the comparative rate in Turkey is 10% I believe.

The same point stands for whichever transfer (or failed transfer) you want to apply it to. Put simply, this is not an easy window to do early business and I think you can look at a lot of clubs in much better positions to us who have also struggled to get deals over the line. Add in a tight financial situation - and some knock backs from initial targets, there are reasons behind the ‘lack’ of activity. It does need to be stressed that you can’t take the accounts figures at face value for PSR because there’s deductibles that come into play within those periods. For example, I think the 21/22 period includes around £36 millions worth of allowable Covid losses from memory.

Yes, the £90 million was 22/23 accounts… so it will disappear from the 3 year cycle from next season. But we’re not at next seasons reporting period yet, which was kind of my point in that whilst that outlier year sits within the calculation period, it limits what you can do in terms of losses for the other two years. We also have a ‘reduced’ upper limit for a few cycles to contend with due to the season in the Championship too. Of course - there is also a strong possibility that PSR won’t be a thing come next season; or how it’s assessed has completely changed.

I’m not saying Cooper’s the answer - but the way West Brom lost to us at their place gives me serious doubts about Corberan as a manager. And at least with Cooper you can accept it feels a somewhat ‘stop gap’ appointment; one designed to bridge us over a 12-18 month period.

Whilst that £90 million loss sits within the 3yr PSR cycle; and PSR remains a thing - that seasons accounting will remain a drag on what we can do financially; because it is pretty much a given that the club still runs at a loss at present (unless there’s significant net value player trading).

I believe if Panathinaikos is lose against Ajax, they drop into the Conference League Playoff round qualifier; and I think the article is suggesting if that was the case they’d want to keep him to play in those games as well. The legs for that round of fixtures are scheduled for the 22nd and 29th August - so just before the window closes.

I just think if your Leicester, Ipswich or Southampton and go in for him in a manor of “we want you!” - Blackburn don’t have much they can do in terms of resisting that move and so it then just becomes a case of negotiating a price with them. His age no doubt puts clubs off - because ‘resale value’ - and there’s probably only a narrow number of clubs that could really consider him as a viable transfer target (lower end of Premier League / higher end of Championship). But because there’s less competition for his signature, that should somewhat be reflected in the transfer fee paid and makes it less likely that the player holds out for another deal ala Soule. So I look at this as a transfer as one that if a club wanted to do and set their focus on; it could have been done early pre-season with all the benefits of doing business early brings with it.

Sometimes simply following the hot hand (or feet in this case) can prove beneficial, especially with strikers. That said - I wouldn’t be certain that this guy is a one hit wonder either. If you look over his career to date, he’s clearly someone who has shown the desire, ambition and application to climb the footballing ranks and appears to be continuing on an upward trajectory in terms of performance - so why would you bet against him being a success in the Premier League? He’s also directly showed us his quality in no uncertain terms in our last home game of last season - so given all that - I’m a little surprised we haven’t shown more serious interest - especially as in terms of making a deal this would appear to be an easier one to make happen and get over the line quickly.
