  7. Clutching at Straws World Cup third-place table and how Scotland can qualify for last 32 Story by Ronan Sullivan The expanded World Cup 2026 format means the introduction of a round of 32 and for some third-placed teams a chance at knockout glory. Teams who finish fourth in their groups are eliminated immediately, but eight of the 12 third-placed teams will live to fight another day. And the battle is close. Evening Standard Iran: Egypt holds off Iran in 1-1 stalemate to secure place in next World Cup round. Current Time 0:17 / Duration 5:22 0 Scotland currently sit 10th in the third-place table after playing their three group games, which leaves their last-32 hopes hanging by a thinnest of threads World Cup third-place teams standings Pos. But their chances are slim. Very slim. They have a 0.07 per cent chance of progressing, to be precise. Scotland need three results to go their way tonight to reach the knockout stages. They need Ghana to defeat third-placed Croatia by at least three goals, leaving both teams level on points but giving Croatia an inferior goal difference. Scotland also require Uzbekistan to avoid defeat against DR Congo. There is a caveat though: If Uzbekistan win, the margin must be fewer than four goals, otherwise they would move above Scotland in the rankings. Finally, Austria must beat Algeria by at least two goals, a result that would leave Algeria behind Scotland on goal difference in the table of third-placed teams and keep Scotland's qualification hopes alive. How are the eight best third-placed teams decided? The eight best third-placed teams are ranked based on several criteria. First, teams are compared by the total number of points they obtained in all group matches. If teams are still level, their goal difference across all group matches is considered. If a tie remains, the total number of goals scored in all group matches is used. If teams cannot be separated using these criteria, the Fair Play ranking is applied, taking into account the number of yellow and red cards received during all group matches. As a final tiebreaker, the FIFA World Ranking is used.

Lee Clark is excited over the prospect of working with new signing Chris Popov after the Wales Under-21 international agreed a two-year deal at Hartlepool United. The 21-year-old forward has been a man in-demand after he was released from League One newcomers Leicester City - and Pools saw off competition from clubs in the EFL and National League to land his signature. Popov will meet a familiar face when he heads to pre-season training with his new side over the coming days after he forged a prolific partnership with fellow Pools new boy Jack Nolan during a loan spell at Morecambe during the second half of last season. Hartlepool United have signed former Leicester City youngster Chris Popov (photo Getty Images) Hartlepool United have signed former Leicester City youngster Chris Popov (photo Getty Images) | Getty Images The duo plundered their way to a combined 26 goals and 12 assists - and although they were unable to help the Shrimps mount a successful bid to avoid relegation from the National League, their performances have given a clear indication of the threat they will pose at Pools during Clark’s first season in charge. The Pools boss revealed Popov’s ‘excellent spell’ with Morecambe was one of the main reasons why he was so keen to add the versatile forward to his squad and he believes the former Foxes prospect has ‘a bright future’ lying ahead of him. He told the club website: “Chris Maxwell and Chris Beech had done a significant amount of work on him and, having watched him closely and spoken with him, it was easy to see why they were so keen to bring him to the football club. He enjoyed an excellent spell at Morecambe last season and showed that he can be a real influence in games at National League level. “What stood out to me was his intelligence as an attacking player. He is comfortable receiving the ball in tight areas, linking play, creating chances and arriving in dangerous positions around the box. He gives us real flexibility because he can operate in a number of attacking positions and that versatility is something we value highly within the way we want to play. At 21, there is still a lot of development ahead of him, but he already possesses qualities that can help the team and we’re excited to start working with him. We believe he is a player with a bright future and we’re excited to see what he can bring to the team.” Mentality Frank Reid Bromby & Partners head of football operations Maxwell added: “His performances at Morecambe made him one of the most sought-after young attacking players available and, understandably, there was strong interest in him following the impact he made during the second half of last season. Having spoken with Chris on a number of occasions, it quickly became clear that he had the ambition, mentality and hunger to improve that we look for in players. A lot of our conversations centred around the football club, the direction we are heading in and the role we felt he could play within that. What was particularly encouraging was how quickly he bought into what we are trying to build.”
  11. Mechanical Engineers Rocks. · Follow The Great Green Wall is one of the most ambitious environmental restoration projects ever attempted. More than 20 African countries have joined forces to create a massive belt of trees and restored landscapes designed to slow the expansion of the Sahara Desert across the Sahel region of Africa. The project aims to stretch nearly 8,000 kilometers (about 5,000 miles) from Senegal on the Atlantic coast to Djibouti on the Red Sea. Originally proposed in 2007 by the African Union, the initiative seeks to combat desertification, restore degraded land, and improve food security for millions of people living in vulnerable regions. The Sahel region experiences severe drought, soil degradation, and declining agricultural productivity, making it one of the areas most affected by climate change. The project does not involve simply planting a continuous line of trees. Instead, it focuses on restoring ecosystems through sustainable agriculture, water management, soil restoration, and community-led land rehabilitation. Farmers and local communities play a central role by planting trees, improving soil fertility, and adopting sustainable farming practices. So far, millions of hectares of land have already been restored. Countries such as Ethiopia, Senegal, and Niger have reported significant progress in reforestation and land recovery. The initiative is expected to eventually restore around 100 million hectares of degraded land, capture 250 million tons of carbon, and create millions of green jobs across the region. If fully completed, the Great Green Wall could become one of the largest ecological restoration efforts in human history, offering a powerful example of international cooperation to address climate change and environmental degradation.

  14. Strange Things · Follow In 1940, Britain freely handed America the theoretical blueprints for the atomic bomb. Six years later, the US legally locked the British out of the results. This technological exchange began with a small, black metal deed box. In the late summer of 1940, a group of British scientists known as the Tizard Mission traveled to the United States carrying some of the most valuable military technology on earth. Britain had a major problem. They possessed world-leading technological breakthroughs but lacked the manufacturing capacity to mass-produce them while under daily German bombing. Their solution was to hand their most closely guarded secrets to the neutral Americans, completely free of charge, in exchange for industrial backing. The British handed over plans for jet engines, gyroscopic gunsights, advanced submarine detection, and the Frisch-Peierls memorandum, which proved an atomic bomb was feasible. They also brought the cavity magnetron, a device that made portable, high-definition radar possible. The American response to this unprecedented generosity was initially enthusiastic collaboration. But as the United States entered the war and its industrial machine spooled up, the dynamic shifted. America became the dominant partner and grew increasingly protective of the very projects the British had jumpstarted. The starkest example was the atomic bomb. Britain’s early "Tube Alloys" program provided the theoretical foundation for the weapon. When the project merged into the American-led Manhattan Project, British scientists expected a full partnership. Instead, the director of the Manhattan Project, General Leslie Groves, instituted strict compartmentalization. He systematically restricted British access to the research, cutting them out of key engineering and production discussions despite Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt signing the 1943 Quebec Agreement promising full collaboration. The technological hoarding reached its peak immediately after the war. In 1946, the US Congress passed the McMahon Act, which strictly prohibited the sharing of any nuclear technology or information with any foreign power—expressly including the United Kingdom. This total cutoff forced the British government to launch its own independent, parallel nuclear weapons program, culminating in their first successful atomic test in 1952.
  15. Russell Martin has 13 players in extra Leicester City pre-season training as 'standards' set | Leicestershire Live Russell Martin has 13 players in extra Leicester City pre-season training as 'standards' set Leicester City players return to pre-season next week and players will return to Seagrave fresh after their own warm summer training Louis Page and Jayden Joseph View Image Louis Page and Jayden Joseph have been two players who have been filmed in extra training(Image: 2025 Plumb Images) Josh Holland Leicester City correspondent 19:00, 26 Jun 2026 Pre-season training at Leicester City gets underway on Monday and Russell Martin will get the opportunity to start work with his players ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. It's a new era at the King Power Stadium and after an abysmal couple of seasons, City go into League One with hope of a good 10 months on the pitch. There remains a great amount of work to be done in the transfer market but Martin has already stressed his excitement at getting to work with the players available. "We know there is a lot of work ahead of us," he said. "Nothing happens just because we want it to. It will take standards every day, it will take detail, it will take everyone pushing in the same direction, but that is what excites me. I want us to build something here that people can really believe in. “The supporters are going to be massive for us. If we can create that connection between the team and the stands, if we can give them a team that runs, fights, plays with courage and gives everything for the badge, then King Power Stadium can be a really powerful place for us. That starts with the work we do now.” Away from Seagrave, plenty of players have been getting the work in during the off-season. One thing that will excite supporters is the amount of talented youngsters keeping on top of their fitness when the season is over. Relegation to League One means the playing squad will look distinctively different in August and there's a big opportunity for academy players to be part of Martin's squad. So it's no surprise to see the likes of Bade Aluko, Jake Evans, Sammy Braybrooke, Jeremy Monga, Louis Page, Will Alves, Logan Briggs, Lorenz Hutchinson, Kevon Gray, Jayden Joseph, Misrad Ali, Kirsten Otchere and Bobby Amartey keeping themselves ticking over. Evans and Hutchinson have both spent time with performance coach Curtis Playermade throughout the summer. Recently, Evans was pictured training with former City striker Patson Daka, who appears to still be doing work in the Midlands. Both strikers will return to Seagrave next week with optimism they can be part of Martin's squad next season. Evans showed bright sparks during his short loan spell with Northampton Town with two goals while Hutchinson's goalscoring record for the academy has been remarkable. Evans has also been putting the work in to improve his finishing with Dan Holman. The coach, who has 272,000 followers on Instagram is a 'goal scoring & attacking coach' and has shared several videos of the Foxes striker in training. Page has also been working with Holman and shared clips on social media of them training together in May, alongside Evans. The midfielder, who turns 18 in July, has been preparing for an important summer as he looks to take a big stride in becoming a key player at the King Power Stadium. Back from his loan spell from Huddersfield Town, Alves is facing a pivotal pre-season at Leicester. After making his professional debut in January 2022 at the age of 16, the attacking midfielder is now five years older and has more senior football under his belt. His short loan spell with Cardiff City in 2025 earned him recognition before Marti Cifuentes allowed him to move to Huddersfield. Unfortunately, the loan spell in League One didn't go entirely to plan with him playing just 15 games across the entire season. Many have backed Page to take flight as a City star this coming campaign, but Alves falls into the same bracket. Something that is great to see is many of City's up-and-coming stars training together during the off season. UEFA Licensed coach Steve Stavrou, based in Leicester, has worked with plenty throughout the summer. Alves, Aluko, Page, Braybrooke, Otchere, Hutchinson and Logan Briggs have all been ticking along against other academy players. A mixture of ball work, finishing, defending and small-sided games have all been shared on social media to give followers an insight into the work being done. Content cannot be displayed without consent Braybrooke has been backed to be a starter for Leicester in the new season following his loan spells with Newport and Chesterfield. The midfielder, similar to Alves, has been among the 'five-star potential' group of players for years now but has only played once for the Foxes - that number is almost certain to rapidly increase. Briggs and Otchere are expected to be assessed by Martin when the doors open at Seagrave for the summer after being regulars for the Under-21s. Briggs, a 21-year-old versatile midfielder, has caught the eye in Premier League 2 recently and will be keen to get further acclimated with the senior team. Otchere scored nine goals in 16 league games last term in his first season with the Under-21s and added a further three in other competitions. He joins Evans and Hutchinson as current centre-forward choices at the club. Another group of players that spent time training together during their summer holidays were Aluko, Gray, Joseph, Amartey and Ali. They spent time in Morocco alongside Southampton's Sutura Kakay and former Leicester academy stars Trey Nyoni and Chey Loureiro. More images were shared on social media of the group enjoying the warm weather on the pitch a couple of weeks ago. Aluko has been training since the first week after the Blackburn Rovers win on May 2. As it stands, though, the club are yet to confirm whether Ali, Amartey or Briggs have agreed new contract terms after offers were made earlier this summer. Monga, who has been the subject of bids from English champions Arsenal, has also been training away from England. The winger has been in Algarve with players under the Gersh Football agency alongside Smart Coaching performance coach Montel Adofo. Manchester City's Kaden Braithwaite and Floyd Samba and Chelsea's Andrew Pennie joined the City star in Portugal

  20. Apparently Due to fifa's new H2H rules, for the first time in World Cup history, we will see 2 teams actively wanting to lose a match. In the Austria vs Algeria match, both teams are safely through after beating Jordan due to the new H2H rule. However, the team that finishes in 2nd in Group J will face Spain, when the team that finishes 3rd will likely face Switzerland. Obviously with neither team wanting to face Spain, Austria will be hoping to lose and drop down to 3rd, whilst Alergia will be hoping for a draw or a loss to stay 3rd... What a bizarre outcome this is..
  21. In many ways it's not even started we're just completing the warm up games
  22. Recruitment will rest entirely on who we haven't managed to shift and judging from recent history there's likely to be one or two of these Faes, Okoli, Winks, Skipp, Decordova-Reid, Kristiansen, Vestergaard not forgetting Choudhury, Mavididi, Vieites (is he still with us) refusing to be flushed away.
