Disabled Parking Spaces, would you use one?

I agree. However his attitude was that, no matter how difficult it was for me to walk at the time, because I didn't have a badge I should not park in a disabled bay.

Fair enough in normal circumstances. His approach was highly confrontational and he would not accept my "motives" for parking there.

Opening gambit from the driver, aged approx 70: "You shouldn't park there, you haven't got a blue badge"!

My reply: "How do you know I haven't"?

Driver: "I've looked" (Therefore he must've got out of his car to check.)

Me: "I have a bad back, It's not easy for me to walk at the moment"

Him: "I don't care about that, you don't have a badge, you're not disabled. Other people might need that space".

At this point I look around pointedly at the 12 other vacant spaces, most of which are nearer to the entrance than the one I'm in.

"Sorry, I was only gone for 15 minutes", showing him the box of tablets.

"Doesn't matter mate, like I said, you don't have a badge. You can't use the disabled spaces. It's a good job you came back cos I was gonna report you. My wife's disabled she needs these spaces and ignorant arseholes like you cause us problems"

I agreed with him that it would have been a problem had I taken the last space. He responded angrily that I had effectively missed the point of disabled spaces.

It went on a little while longer with him berating me until I just mouthed an expletive, got in my car and drove off.

Needless to say I was riled by his attitude and I myself was shaking as one does after a heated argument in a public place.

Should have told the silly old ****er to mind his own business.

Yeah I would, don't believe in them anyway. Want to be treated equal then be treated equal.

Thats a bit of a brain dead thing to say.

Given that a badge is required then there ought  to be a fast track system to obtain a temporary / short term one for those that are temporarily  disabled.

I saw a guy this morning use the single disabled spot even though there were spaces 6 cars away to use a cash machine. Pure selfish laziness.

Completly agree with this.

It can take someone so long to obtain one that often their short term disability has resolved. and they have been made to suffer before a badge has arrived.

Similar to the post I made much earlier in the thread regarding when I had a broken leg. I needed a disabled space as much as anyone, however I had no right to use the spaces legally.

Buy a blue badge off the internet

Just make sure you at least hobble a little or look like you are in some discomfort...

There should be some sort of system where your dr writes you a letter..... you take it to the DSS office with a photo... they call your Dr to verify that they wrote the letter, then issue you with a 4 week/ 6 week temporary pass.

Surely its not that difficult to implement?

No, I agree completely.

Even having to take it somewhere for authorisation seems slightly over the top for a temporary document. The Doctors are surely in a responsible enough position to print off a unique code/barcode, which is recognised by traffic wardens/parking attendants. Obviously the scheme would need to be rolled out nationwide and would need proper implementation. However the whole point would be to enable those who are impeded due to a temporary disability, easier access to parking. So having to go from Hospital, to the Doctor and then to a 'DSS office' (not sure what agency that is, but you mentioned it) seems a bit unnecessary. I fully agree regarding a temporary system though.

the only question i have is, was the guy who gave you the flack disabled himself or a blue badge user?

or just an utter dick?

From what I read, it was the husband of a blue badge holder.

then the guy should get off his high horse. the amount of people that abuse blue badges is unreal. my friend is blind and her (now ex) husband used it to park outside nottingham ice arena on double yellows all night whilst we watch the prodigy.

in my eyes OP is in the right. but in the eyes of the law however he wouldn't be. childs parking at asda makes me laugh how its in the corner and away from everyone and everything however.

Is it actually illegal to park in a disabled spot in a supermarket car park without a blue badge?

The issue with child parking is mostly about being able to open the door properly, so not that daft.

I believe it is. otherwise what is the point in having disabled parking spaces anywhere? most common places they are.

No because it's a civil agreement with the car park land owner. It's no different to parking in a designated bay and not paying.

so what is the point in blue badges then and traffic wardens enforcing fines?

Traffic wardens enforce fines on council owned property, which is different to supermarkets. Council-issued fines are enforced under council byelaws, which are recognised in law so fail to pay would mean you'd get called to court.

Private property is a civil agreement so the land owner could take you to a civil claims court but it would cost significantly more than they would win from you so it's not worth it. Their business model is based on the fact that most people who are given a "fine" (they can't call it that so it is called a parking charge notice) will pay out of fear, which is enough money, so they don't bother chasing those that don't pay

im going off my finite knowledge but i know ive saw a program with traffic wardens who go around catching people parking in the wrong places with the blue badge or using their partners blue badge without the disabled person being in the car. so what are they then?

i remember this person getting someone who was going into a hospital using their partners blue badge. i guess hospitals are council.

Sounds like people acting on behalf of the government to cut down on the fraudulent use of blue badges. Similar to people that investigate benefit fraud and falsely claiming disability etc.

Just because it is not illegal does not make it morally right. I guess it comes down to that at the end of the day.

That and any retribution that people may feel like taking, I've heard of cars in disabled bays and no badge somehow get scratched before.
