5000 word Essay about Cambiasso

Recommended Posts

Posted

So we've been told at college we can write an essay that would help us in the long run for getting to uni etc. I immediately suggested that my topic would be "Why Esteban Cambiasso is the best defensive midfielder in the PL", for some reason this idea was turned away due to it not being possible to write 5000 words on that, apparently... So I need your help to fight my case, what could I write about regarding that question, statistics, style of play etc.?

(Also what are the odds of writing to the club asking to meet him and ask a couple of questions)

Thanks

Just change the angle of the essay, write an essay on his career as a whole, you could write a few books worth about that, but if it's a serious topic they want and it'll enhance your chances to get in to uni probably better to write about something a bit more serious than gushing over a footballer. Just imo.

I would say very good if you do it now.

He seems a real genuine bloke and sure he would love it/help you.

Any good 'best defensive midfielder in the PL' debate has to examine and explain why he is superior to the competition. Get reading up on Lee Cattermole.

What do you want to study at uni?

And you can't really write a 5000 word essay on something that has a factually incorrect title. However good Esteban has been for us, Nemanja Matic is a far superior defensive midfielder, and he's not the only one.

Its graded on the standard in which we write it which will then get us the grade, plus the effort we put in, that's why I feel going to see if I could speak to him would really help that bit out, but I guess your right, broaden the topic a bit

It sure would help that's for sure

Break it down into sections - at level 4 of writing (which is where they want you to get to with this) you should demonstrate the ability not to solely be descriptive but to critically discuss and compare and contrast in your narrative.

So think about what you want to write about and break it down into sections of say, six sections of 700 words but make sure you refer to academic literature so for example, sections on sports science, age, achievements, sponsors, income, technique, opta/carling stats need factual or comparative / critical discussion.....

Use the other 800 words for an intro and a conclusion.

I've already looked into a bit, with only one yellow card to his name he is by far the nicest player

I'm yet to give it a thought yet, although for some reason forensic science is calling my name

There a couple of things in which he is better at, I'm sure of it

He'll probably be the nicest and most talented defensive mid in League 1 by the end of next season.

Do you mind if I screenshot this and show my teacher? You've managed to prove the possibility, thanks!

Fair enough, I'm doing a journalism degree at the moment, touching on quite a lot of sport.

If you do want to make a request to the club, try getting hold of Anthony Herlihy, he's in charge of media. Just stick his name in to Google. Not spoken to him personally, but a friend of a friend knows him quite well and he's meant to be a nice guy.

I've looked into that, how are you finding it? I don't want to end up going into something that will bore me after a year so I haven't made any final decision yet, but i like sport so I've looked at most degrees that route and half of them do appeal

Searching him up now, thanks for your help!

I love it, it's something I've always wanted to do though. I'm a mature student, so probably appreciate it a bit more than someone who has just finished their A Levels.

Plenty of perks in journalism, got to meet a few famous people (Jack Straw, Greg Rutherford, Guy Mowbray, a few others) and ask a few questions. Made a contact at MK Dons, they let me in the press box when I make a request. Done post match pressers with Karl Robinson and visiting managers. Nothing as entertaining as Pearson yet!

Northants Cricket Club are pretty welcoming in the T20 season too, so can't be bad.

It does sound pretty appealing thats for sure, I've always grew up jealous of peoples jobs being to watch sport and then write about it, like that's something i wouldn't even mind doing anyway! What were the entry requirements for the degree at whatever university you're at?

Honestly couldn't tell you. As a mature student I got in after an interview and proving I had GCSE's in English and Maths, didn't need to go through UCAS.

Good luck with whatever you choose

I've never done any form of advanced writing

But when I was at school I usually found I did better work with something I didn't have a pre existing opinion about. Actually writing about a topic I had to research from more than 1 point of view.

I mean, rather than cambiasso being the best cdm in the prem (sounds more like a bad topic in a debate team), maybe something on why he has adapted to the prem better than others who have moved from serie a.

(Position, age, experience, team he went to, his future plans, coaches he has played under)

Just a suggestion if you do want to stick with the cambiasso theme.

This sounds like you're doing EPQ to me and if that's the case then don't limit yourself like your essay title suggests. For a start the title is presumptious whereas you want a title which allows you to explore rather than your title which allowd little deviation(if you get what i mean). I also think you're gonna struggle meeting the epq criteria with that. I did one about hooliganism and how that reflected on society at the time which meant i could combine football with a bit of politics, both of which im very much interested in but I learnt so much researching it. Honestly do it on something youre interested in but you don't know too much about or anything you've already got pre conceived ideas on.

As others have already said, your title is perhaps a bit restricting.

If you want to write about cambiasso specifically, a simple change to 'Is Cambiasso the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League?' would probably be better. Avoids the (let's be honest here) non-factual statement and opens up the topic for comparison with other CDMs.

Otherwise, perhaps something along the lines of "The rise of the defensive midfield position in modern day football". Open it up with some rhetoric about the changes over time, then get on to discussing key players in the role, with specific examples. Cambiasso has had such a successful and varied career that you could quite feasibly dedicate a good section to him - an interview with direct quotes would really boost that.

Posted

As others have suggested use other people's research on similar topics (doesn't have to be football) use google scholar to get methods of comparison which you can justify.

I'd probably have these sections:

Intro:

Existing Literature:

Method:

Stats:

Analysis:

Conclusion:

I don't see with the correct stats and approved comparison methods why it would hinder you

Posted

change your title to "cambiasso is the best player to ever play in the premier league" and you're good to go

Posted

Why don't you do it on the sports science at the club? There will be lots of literature written and you could get an interview with the physios etc about it.

You could then scope part of it to being about how the sports science and fitness regimes keep players like Esteban at their best for longer.
