davieG Posted 17 June 2015 Posted 17 June 2015 Drivers warned of 15 months of roadworks as £19m scheme on A50 into Leicester starts By danjmartin | Posted: June 17, 2015 The A50 They say the work will ultimately cut journey times and reduce congestion. Minor preliminary works on the £8.5 million first phase of the scheme have already begun. The major engineering will centre on improvements at three main junctions and roundabouts – at the County Hall roundabout, the Groby Road/New Parks Way roundabout by Glenfield Hospital and the junction of New Parks Way and Aikman Avenue. Roads will remain open through out the works, though the councils say some occasional lane closures will be needed. The work will start in the schools' summer holidays, when there is less traffic using the routes. Letters are being sent to hundreds of homes and businesses in the area, and signs will be put in place advising motorists of likely delays. The Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) has secured £16.2million from the Government towards the scheme. Leicestershire County Council leader Councillor Nick Rushton said: "This scheme will not only enable it to cope with the increased volumes of traffic that will be seen as a result of new developments being built, but will also play a vital role in the area's economic prosperity by helping maintain good transport links. "We will do what we can to keep disruption to a minimum and would like to thank motorists and residents in advance for their patience while these improvements are carried out." City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: "Over the coming years the road network connecting the city to the north west of Leicestershire is going to play an increasingly important role for the growing number of businesses and homes proposed for that area. "The kind of work needed to improve roundabouts and busy commuter routes like this is extensive, but doing so now will ensure the road network can cope safely for many, many years to come." LLEP chairman Nick Pulley, said: "This strategically important transport route will assist the continued delivery of economic success in Leicester and Leicestershire." Parafox Posted 18 June 2015 Posted 18 June 2015 Do you think it will be better with bus lanes in it? Soulsby is being disingenuous. The plan will reduce available space for general traffic and result in increased congestion. Just look what has happened to The Newarkes, Oxford Street, Vaughn Way, Leicester Road Glen Parva and the knock on effect on Aylestone Road, The Underpass, Welford Road etc. What is really needed is re-surfacing and some re-modelling of junctions and roundabouts. That's pretty much it, IMO.
abc Posted 18 June 2015 Posted 18 June 2015 Isn't that picture of the road through New parks by the Fire station? Not the A50 ? Guess the traffic was too bad to get to the A50 for a picture!

Unfortunately he doesn't so a continually frustrating existence for motorists is the only outcome.
